If Trump wants to keep treating immigration as a war and ICE agents/Immigrations as soldiers, I think it’s time for some good old fashioned partizanship.
ICE agents and people involved with immigration should face social consequences. Heckle them in public, pour salt in their lattes, whatever. Brownshirts hopefully get the wall in the end, but until then, let’s make them regret being bootlickers.
It’s certainly demonstrated that the latitude we accept as “oppression” is pretty broad. All those 2nd amendment fans who want to fight the government if it get oppressive ought to have been getting busy ere now. But no armed resistance; ICE is still free to move in the streets.
We’re all waiting for it to get worse and when it does we just reset the set-point.

Well, that was interesting, for certain values of “interesting” that include terrifying. One of the speakers talked about how parents were being told that their children were being taken off for a bath…and they never heard from them again. Sound familiar? Hint: The first people to be killed in concentration camps were those who couldn’t work. Small children, for example. But maybe that’s not happening here. Maybe they’re only being taken away and sold into slavery. Yeah, the free market. Much more the US’s style, you know.

When arguing with my parents common methods of deflection appear whenever a beloved authority figure is critisized such as whataboutism. I think of it as psychological group dependence in political behavior. They need this sense of balance in wrongdoing between groups in order to ignore or rationalize away the threatening information I’m presenting, or pretend it doesn’t matter.
It’s possible that the Obama portrait is an attempt to defend against criticism of the Trump portrait amd surrounding messages by doing something like “but we have Obama up too!”. I’m not too sure about this but it’s the closest thing I can think of.
As for what I’m doing to fight this stuff, I’m going to propose to my family that we have a serious discussion night. I’ve moved back home to Tucson, Arizona and I’m somewhat estranged from my parents and one if my brothers. It adds to my social anxiety in general and I’m tired of it (I wonder if family feels socially threatening it adds to society feeling socially threatening for me). I know they’re not happy with the situation too.
So to start dealing with it I’m going to propose a serious discussion night and start with a discussion about acceptable rules.

I’m sorry, but I think that Trump voters are going to get a lot worse in the next time, especially those that didn’t vote for him because of his racist agenda, but despite of it because he was the conservative candidate.
When confronted with the evil that is happening right now they have two choices: Either accept that they made that evil happen or defend it. Most of them will go with the latter.
No, it wouldn’t change shit, but people would certainly remember that his face was there and make unfortunate associations. It happens all the time, and it’s much, much harder to convince people that there is no connection when they’ve decided that there is, plus the conspiracy to cover it up.
At my work, there’s a wall with photo portraits of all previous directors, and you just know they’ve all made contributions and left their mark and legacy, otherwise they wouldn’t be up there. I think that portrait is there as a misdirection of ultimate blame, as a sign of ‘Obama started it [but Trump made it better?]’.

I’m going to present it as an opportunity for us to express what we feel on equal terms so that we can learn to interact despite differences. To level the playing field I’ll help them research the things they want to bring up without any commentary while researching (they do trust me to be fair despite our differences), and I’ll propose we agree on rules for these serious discussion nights. Rules that can be amended.
