Dear Leader

Have you seen the mural painted inside the children’s detention center, the former Walmart that is being used to house young immigrants?

Dear Leader. Glorious Leader. Maximum Leader.

Nice to know he’s taking credit for his inhumanity. I notice they also put a portrait of Obama on a wall in there, but no one is fooled — this is a Republican action.

And what the heck is that, with that strange choice of an inappropriate quote?

Why was there also a painting of Obama though? Just for them to be able to say we’re just putting presidents’ faces?

I think they’ll turn it into a labor camp soon. I wonder if Trump will try to cancel the 2020 elections too.

Why do you think they’ll be embarrassed by it?

    Giliell, #5

Bingo. This past year has taught me so much about myself (in a disappointing way). I wonder what more I (and my fellow Americans) will be okay with.

    Hi, chigau. *waves*
So far, I’ve emailed my Congressman (not that it will do any good; he’s lockstep with Trump) and I’ve inquired if my company can do matching donations to ACLU or https://asylumadvocacy.org/. I don’t have any protests/marches going on around me, but I’m thinking of making a big ol’ sign and sticking it in my window.

    Fixed it for you.
You only keep tricking yourselves into believing that the few times you became somewhat less horrible to some people is your true self, much like the wife beater thinks he’s this gentle good guy who brings her flowers after he broke her bones.

    Giliell @5,
Thank you. We must use those words as a weapon.
    Hmmm… Rapier, or Bludgeon?

Perhaps Trump got some interior design tips from his autocrat pals. It certainly screams “banana republic tyrant chic” to me.

Just in case you thought we couldn’t outdo the intolerance and inhumanity of the WWII Japanese internment camps…

Just think, this is likely the best of the facilities. Its the only one they’ve allowed press into, and even then only allowing gov’t shot footage to be used. Good thing they have a plan for the overcrowding issue. Tent camps just in time for the Texas summer. Will Arpaio merely be an advisor, or actually get put in charge of them?

If Trump wants to keep treating immigration as a war and ICE agents/Immigrations as soldiers, I think it’s time for some good old fashioned partizanship.

ICE agents and people involved with immigration should face social consequences. Heckle them in public, pour salt in their lattes, whatever. Brownshirts hopefully get the wall in the end, but until then, let’s make them regret being bootlickers.

  18. says

It’s certainly demonstrated that the latitude we accept as “oppression” is pretty broad. All those 2nd amendment fans who want to fight the government if it get oppressive ought to have been getting busy ere now. But no armed resistance; ICE is still free to move in the streets.

We’re all waiting for it to get worse and when it does we just reset the set-point.

  19. Porivil Sorrens says

By “people involved with immigration”, I meant immigration officials, sorry for not being more clear.

For those who served back in the day, remember this?

It is pretty dated and all, but there are some gems in there, nevertheless (3, 4 and 5 for those poor kids trapped in Walmart the American Gulag)

    1. I am an American fighting man. I serve in the forces which guard my country and our way of life. I am prepared to give my life in their defense.

    2. I will never surrender of my own free will. If in command, I will never surrender my men while they still have the means to resist.

    3. If I am captured, I will continue to resist by all means available. I will make every effort to escape and aid others to escape. I will accept neither parole nor special favors from the enemy.

    4. If I become a prisoner of war, I will keep faith with my fellow prisoners. I will give no information, or take part in any action which might be harmful to my comrades. If I am senior, I will take command. If not, I will obey the lawful orders of those appointed over me and will back them up in every way.

    5. When questioned, should I become a prisoner of war, I am bound to give only name, rank, service number and date of birth. I will evade answering further questions to the utmost of my ability. I will make no oral or written statements disloyal to my country and its allies or harmful to their cause.

    6. I will never forget that I am an American fighting man, responsible for my actions, and dedicated to the principles which made my country free. I will trust in my God and in the United States of America.

Well, that was interesting, for certain values of “interesting” that include terrifying. One of the speakers talked about how parents were being told that their children were being taken off for a bath…and they never heard from them again. Sound familiar? Hint: The first people to be killed in concentration camps were those who couldn’t work. Small children, for example. But maybe that’s not happening here. Maybe they’re only being taken away and sold into slavery. Yeah, the free market. Much more the US’s style, you know.

  28. says

The Obama portrait might be some sort of shield.

When arguing with my parents common methods of deflection appear whenever a beloved authority figure is critisized such as whataboutism. I think of it as psychological group dependence in political behavior. They need this sense of balance in wrongdoing between groups in order to ignore or rationalize away the threatening information I’m presenting, or pretend it doesn’t matter.

It’s possible that the Obama portrait is an attempt to defend against criticism of the Trump portrait amd surrounding messages by doing something like “but we have Obama up too!”. I’m not too sure about this but it’s the closest thing I can think of.

As for what I’m doing to fight this stuff, I’m going to propose to my family that we have a serious discussion night. I’ve moved back home to Tucson, Arizona and I’m somewhat estranged from my parents and one if my brothers. It adds to my social anxiety in general and I’m tired of it (I wonder if family feels socially threatening it adds to society feeling socially threatening for me). I know they’re not happy with the situation too.
So to start dealing with it I’m going to propose a serious discussion night and start with a discussion about acceptable rules.

They could cover the walls in the writings of Malcolm X and Angela Davis and it wouldn’t change shit about the fact that it’s the Trump administration that build concentration camps for kids.

As for what I’m doing to fight this stuff, I’m going to propose to my family that we have a serious discussion night.

I’m sorry, but I think that Trump voters are going to get a lot worse in the next time, especially those that didn’t vote for him because of his racist agenda, but despite of it because he was the conservative candidate.
When confronted with the evil that is happening right now they have two choices: Either accept that they made that evil happen or defend it. Most of them will go with the latter.

No, it wouldn’t change shit, but people would certainly remember that his face was there and make unfortunate associations. It happens all the time, and it’s much, much harder to convince people that there is no connection when they’ve decided that there is, plus the conspiracy to cover it up.
At my work, there’s a wall with photo portraits of all previous directors, and you just know they’ve all made contributions and left their mark and legacy, otherwise they wouldn’t be up there. I think that portrait is there as a misdirection of ultimate blame, as a sign of ‘Obama started it [but Trump made it better?]’.

The tricky part will be chopping it into useful bite-sized pieces that my parents can internalize without shutting down. It’s going to be an experiment.

My parents already know that I don’t interact with them much because of what I described as “horrible things that you post on Facebook” (with a history of things I’ve confronted them on). I’m going to present it as an opportunity for us to express what we feel on equal terms so that we can learn to interact despite differences. To level the playing field I’ll help them research the things they want to bring up without any commentary while researching (they do trust me to be fair despite our differences), and I’ll propose we agree on rules for these serious discussion nights. Rules that can be amended.

I know they want a relationship with their first born child. This will be a cost.

The quote is from Trump’s book “The Art of the Deal”:

    https://twitter.com/ParkerMolloy/status/1007242321551904768

And refers to the long term battle he lost trying to evict a group of tenants from a rent-controlled property he owned so he could tear it down and build something for a “better class” of tenant.

No doubt it was the only semi-suitable quotable thing of his they could find (“You’re Fired” probably didn’t cut it) — a life lesson from a callous, shitty landlord…

  35. David Marjanović says

I wonder if Trump will try to cancel the 2020 elections too.

Not officially. Every attempt will be made to ramp up voter suppression; the paperless machines in Georgia will do as programmed; Putin will contribute to the above as he damn well pleases*; but all the show & dance of an election will be there. The show must go on. Illiberal democracy has an enormous incentive to be seen as democracy, as the unfettered Will of the People.

    * That might actually mean ensuring Trump loses, as the useful idiot may or may not have become a counterproductive idiot – and then spreading rumors that he, Putin, did it, creating chaos and throwing doubt on the winner’s legitimacy as Putin had originally planned to do with Clinton. Remember the #RIPDemocracy campaign of election day 2016, mostly canceled at the last minute?

And refers to the long term battle he lost trying to evict a group of tenants from a rent-controlled property he owned so he could tear it down and build something for a “better class” of tenant.

    …Wow.
