Umm, PZ? When, in your talk, you say that a majority of Christians don’t believe the 6000-year-old Earth idea? How are you getting that? Your next slide has the 48% of the general public believing in a young Earth. There’s no way to get a majority of Christians to be outside that group.

Isn’t that from conflating “Ussher was right” and “the Earth may not be _exactly_ 6000 years old, but it’s not billions of years old” ? It’s the difference between explicitly-codified nonsense and something that’s equally nonsensical but more vague.

Hard as it is I know for some people from the USA to conceive that there might be Christians, or indeed any other people outside their borders.

Wikipedia informs that ~45% of the US population claims to believe in some form of creationism (uncertainty of 5% depending on the sample), while the number of young-Earth creationists is near ~30%. Since 70%-75% of Americans are some form of Christian, only 40% are young-Earth creationists. Then there is another fraction that assert some other form of creationism.
Having listened to the talk, I think PZ was referring only to the US population in both cases. There are obvious comparisons to other countries (e.g. UK with ~20% creationists), but that was not the particular point at that point. If I listened incorrectly, that’s my fault.

I heard that as the majority of christian denominations don’t believe in a 6000 year old earth. Most of them don’t take an official position on the earth’s age, even if a lot of their adherents do.
I wonder if that’s because they are concerned that they are losing educated leadership fast enough as it is…

@rturpin: That same website says “The true feral cat does not rely on humans, obtaining its food and shelter from the natural environment. This is unlike semi-feral cats, which live around dump sites, alleys or abandoned buildings, relying on humans by scavenging rubbish scraps.” Stray, semi-feral, and feral cats are all being discussed there.
Yeah, so the question becomes how many true feral cats there are. I’ve never heard of or seen any in any of the wild habitats with which I’m a bit familiar. Of course, that resolves to the usual possibilities: a) they’re there, and just hard to find, or b) they do well in some habitats, but not others.
