Odd… this is actually quite old; I remember seeing it a while ago and thinking “This won’t stay up very long.” And yet here it is…

Well, time to fire up the ol’ HTML spider and download the whole archive.

Yeah, I’ve seen this up for a good while. Honestly, I prefer having the new complete print collection.

I’m not surprised this is still up, except in light of the recent print collection–if anyone would go after the online collection, the publishers would. But although Watterson is fiercely opposed to violation, misuse and abuse of his copyrights, he appears to have abandoned pursuit of violators as part of his seclusion. I don’t know if he’s commented on this or not, but I might be remembering some comment from him about not wanting to deal with the mess and publicity of litigation. Or not. :P

I’ve always had to resist the urge to challenge those people with the ever-popular “Calvin urinating on X” car window decals…of course it’s petty, and I doubt their love or respect for the character extends to the author’s wishes regarding him. This, of course, contributes to my even MORE petty and shallow urge to challenge the owners of the more recent “Calvin praying before Cross” decals, as the decal uses a violation of both law and the direct intent of the artist in order to advocate a concept of alleged humility, morality and proper conduct. In other words, they “aren’t very Christian.”

rrt, I feel the same way about the Calvin-and-the-cross ripoffs on windows. They may be more offensive than the Calvin-peeing-on-Chvey/Ford ripoffs. In my experience they are always on the back windows of pickup trucks. I think shooting them out with the rifle from the gunrack in your own pickup would be an appropriate response, but I would never advocate violence of any kind.

I make it a point not to shoot at pickup trucks with gun racks.

Ooo, I like the searchable database. What does it say about me that my first automatic response when looking at the “phrase to search for” command was to type in “horrendous space kablooie”?

  6. says

I was disappointed by the searchable database — my very first query came up with nothing. My favorite C&H is the one where Calvin explains art to Hobbes. I looked for “weltanschauung”, “artist’s statement” and “secret language” to no avail.

The Calvin v Ford stickers belong to people who think that Calvin is nothing more than a more modern Dennis the Menace. Don’t hate them, just pity them for their ignorance and incomprehension.

  7. Joker Cross says

Bill Watterson has traditionally taken a neutral stance towards copyright violaters. He was ever the artist, not a business man. It’s what has allowed those idiotic stickers to propagate to the degree that they have.

I wish my print version had come with a searchable digitized version on DVD. Best of both worlds, and all that.

    PZ:
    1) Here you have it PZ. The people who register to post comments are overly representative of the “sticker police” contingent in your readership.

    2) Radomly chosen date.
    Calvin:
-Can I have a different plate, Mom?
    – Why?
    – Somebody puked on mine.
    – Just eaty your dinner and keep quiet, ok, Calvin?

    3) I remembered my password, so maybe I’ll post again and we can find out what contingent I’m in.

    ….

I really, really shoulda read the comments before going through and downloading each of these by hand…

    I suppose this “builds character.”

Now of course I’m going to download one of the archive things anyway, just in case I missed any…
