The award for the stupidest Romney endorsement

David Frum, former speechwriter for George W. Bush, is supposed to be one of the ‘sane Republicans’, a breed that is on the verge of extinction. Kevin Drum points to his strange argument as to why it is better for Mitt Romney to win.

Frum says:

The congressional Republicans have shown themselves a destructive and irrational force in American politics. But we won’t reform the congressional GOP by re-electing President Obama. If anything, an Obama re-election will not only aggravate the extremism of the congressional GOP, but also empower them: an Obama re-election raises the odds in favor of big sixth-year sweep for the congressional GOP – and very possibly a seventh-year impeachment. A Romney election will at least discourage the congressional GOP from deliberately pushing the US into recession in 2013. Added bonus: a Romney presidency likely means that the congressional GOP will lose seats in 2014, as they deserve.

Basically he is saying that although the Republican congress is nuts, if Obama is re-elected, they will go even more nuts and completely blow up the country. So vote Republican!

Yes, even the sane Republicans have gone nuts.

    Isn’t this terrorism?

So we are supposed to vote for…terrorists?

They are good at it though. The thought of a Morbot christofascist like Romney being elected has thoroughly terrified me.

I said good bye to two of my old friends a week ago. They are dual citizen professionals who lived here for 30 years. And just went back to Europe. I don’t blame them.

The only way to keep the loony right under control is to vote for a guy who never stood up to them no matter how unhinged and hateful they got? The guy who still endorses Todd Aiken after his ignorant misogyny was made plain for all to see? That’s the kind of magical thinking you’d expect from a libertarian. Or Pope Palpadict.

    That made my brain hurt!

(Do not tell me that my brain cannot feel pain! Reading and parsing that hurts!)

Mr Frum certainly has a good point. A win for Romney would forever end the usurious domination in Washington of Kenyan political influence and go a long way to solving the fiscal problems of the US. Just to show the GOP that there are no hard feelings, we should hand over the Sudetenland to sweeten the deal.

Peace and harmony are more important than ideological differences.

I’m just going to move Frum out of the still sane list of republicans, leaving…let’s see here. Well, that’s about wrapped that up.

  6. says

That’s exactly the same argument the Des Moines Register used. “The Republicans in Congress are obstructionist and ready to run the country into the ground, so vote Romney.”

It just makes my jaw drop.

(The rest of Frum’s column at least lists real reasons, which I may not like, or agree with, but don’t make my jaw drop. But this…?!)

Ah the GOP mafia -- it would be a shame if something bad were to happen to the country -- the old protection racket

See what happens when the accommodationists get out of their cages and get into politics? We should elect Romney so that we don’t further offend republicans? Holy f**k Batman!!

    Cognitive dissonance.
Frum has grown up as a Republican. He is honest enough to admit to himself that most current Republican politicians are batshit crazy, but he is not willing to let go of a lifelong affiliation into which he has invested a lot of emotional capital.

He is probably right in a nasty twisted way. But if Romney gets elected the supreme court is likely to bend so far to the right it turns into a croquet hoop. At which time you can kiss goodby to Roe vs Wade, and meaningful separation of church and state. If you loved Citizens United just see what a new supreme court could do for you.

If Romney wins, at least those people who don’t care about separation of church and state will learn why it’s important! I came very close to voting for Romney for exactly that reason.

David Frum was on a Canadian documentary show, and he said that:

“If Obama wins, the republican party will double down, and become even more extreme.”

    —————

He gave a *very* clear impression to his Canadian viewers that the extremists are destroying the republican party. He did *not* seem happy about it at all. Of course, this was on a Canadian show that few Americans will ever see, so he could at least be honest!
