This is why I haven’t been blogging

My new distraction: Draw Something for iPhone.

My favorite part: Taking way too much time to draw something where a stick figure would have conveyed the message. For example, my drawing for the word “Obama”:

This is what I did for “alone”:

I added you because I, too, am an addict. But if Obama is typical of your drawings, I am way outclassed.

I had added you, then when I remembered you were actually, you know, good at drawing and not just in my ‘stick figure’ league, I half regretted adding you. I mean, I love playing and it’s nice to play against someone who can draw so well, it’s just that I feel bad that you have to put up with my bad drawings.

I thought of adding, but then realised that only people who know me really well can understand the convoluted workings of my mind and guess what it is I am trying to convey
Though, that said, I always think my drawings are fantastic and people are being willfully obstructionist by refusing to understand

I do have to say that Jen is an excellent guesser. I can’t remember the word I drew for her 2 turns ago, but I do remember being really impressed that she guessed it before it looked like anything.

I’m not sure if it’s considered cheating, but since the guesser sees, not just the finished product, but the process of the drawing, I usually make treat it like video. I’ll draw something and if I think the guesser might still be confused, I’ll erase it and draw it differently. I’m not sure if it’s considered cheating, but I’ll write words that might be needed to describe. I figure as long as I’m not giving away the actual word, it should be ok (Example: I labeled the brown squigly thing in the tequila bottle I was drawing as a worm to help the guesser). The only time I probably crossed the line and cheated was when I had to draw “stop” for Jen and I drew a red octagon. Without thinking, I added the word “Stop” in the middle (I was, afterall, drawing a stop sign.) By the time I realized that I had written the word, I figured it was too late. Lucky I saw in the replay that she guessed it before I wrote it out, so I didn’t feel so bad.

I consider the video of drawing an integral part of the process. The image I made earlier of a bazooka would not be nearly so clear if the action of blowing up a house was no animated.

I got tired of Draw Something after a week or so. I don’t think I’m alone. It was really fun for that week though!

Be careful then, about checking out Drawception.com (currently down for maintenance, but hopefully not much longer). It’s like Draw Something combined with Telephone. One person comes up with a phrase, and then the phrase is given to another person to draw. This drawing is given to someone else to interpret into a new phrase (which may be very like or very different from the original one, depending on the drawing he/she is looking at), which in turn is drawn by someone else. This goes on until there are a total of 12 panels of drawings/interpretations, and then the whole thing is published for participants (and everyone else) to see. The whole thing is anonymous– you make a profile, but you don’t get to pick who to play with– and timed (10 minutes to draw/interpret each panel). It’s addictive and fucking hilarious, and probably will be turned into an app sooner or later but right now it’s in beta and web-based.

I love it! But I don’t have an iPhone *forever alone*. I go on isketch.net
Try drawing elaborate dinosaurs and Batmans and then adding the real picture in at the end, think T-Rex holding a banana, folks love that(or they get mad) :D.

I added it after I read this and have now played enough to almost get more colours. It’s pretty addicting! If anyone would like to add me, my username is rinmouse :)

Sadly, you have too many games. Oh well. (I added you, rinmouse, hope you don’t mind!)

Man! I thought I was going overboard with the shag carpet, wallpaper, oil painting and patterning for the couch I was drawing *g*. It also amuses me to draw the Hindenburg newsreel scene every time I get ‘blimp’, but your Obama is flaming awesome.
