The Chicago Tribune reports that the Vatican is determined to fight to limit marriage exclusively to heterosexuals, calling the privileged status of heterosexuals “an achievement of civilization.”
“It is clear that in Western countries there is a widespread tendency to modify the classic vision of marriage between a man and woman, or rather to try to give it up, erasing its specific and privileged legal recognition compared to other forms of union,” Father Federico Lombardi, said in a tough editorial on Vatican Radio.
Hmm, special privileges for people like us, with vigorous enforcement of laws excluding people who are not like us. Where have I heard that before?
And what would a bigoted rant be without vague, irrational threats of future misfortune?
Lombardi’s editorial on Vatican Radio, which is broadcast around the world in some 30 languages, called the votes myopic, saying “the logic of it cannot have a far-sighted outlook for the common good”.
Lombardi, who is also the Vatican’s chief spokesman as well as director of Vatican Radio and Vatican Television, said there was “public acknowledgement” that “monogamous marriage between a man and woman is an achievement of civilization”.
Which of course is why Lombardi himself, like all Catholic clergy, is required to abstain from marriage. Marriage, as an achievement of civilization, isn’t holy enough to be fitting for the priesthood, but it’s too holy for gays. Or something. But at least he’s open and honest about wanting to discriminate against gays and obtain special privileges exclusively for heterosexuals.
