I have written before of the work done by the comedy duo known as The Good Liars who are attending creepy Trump events and recording their interactions with his supporters, like the way that Jordan Klepper does for The Daily Show.
In a recent one, they ask Michele Morrow, a candidate for the position of North Carolina Superintendent of Public Instruction, for her autograph. She is of course gratified until she is shown the document to be signed which is a social media post by her calling for the killing of Barack Obama.

I am puzzled by her reaction. Why would she be willing to proudly make a public post and then embarrassingly try to escape signing it? That looks worse than if she had nonchalantly done so.

This one’s easy. People like this has two messages: an extremist one for their base, a moderate-sounding but dog-whistley one for the wider public. Regardless of which is closer to their true beliefs, they can’t be seen as fully standing by either one because the believe it will hurt them with whichever group that message isn’t for.
That, and also because in this particular sort of situation, anyone who is even vaguely smart would be suspecting a trap. I know I would, even if I had only one position which I fully stood by.

Indeed, the request for a signature would sound some alarm bells even in a third-rate politco’s mind.
But something that should be remembered: this kind of fascistoid “politician” has no ideology and no mental structure.
Their “credo” is a mix of animal reflexes, chrome-plated ignorance, reality denial and a big dollop of crybaby (except for Trump, who’s 110% crybaby).
So looking for logic is useless as they don’t have any and never use it. It follows that arguing with them using logic is also useless, as they don’t recognize it: it’s all button-pushing.
It’ s pretty disheartening to see.
