It may seem like there is nothing that the fever swamps of the right wing can throw up that would be disavowed by the Republican party. But it seems that even they have limits. You may recall my post on QAnon, the bizarre conspiracy mystery phenomenon that has inexplicably captured the allegiance of so many people despite its manifest wackiness, such as that Donald Trump and the military are in a secret allegiance to combat the Deep State and are at this very moment poised to carry out sweeping indictments and arrests of vast numbers of well-known people before they can stage their coup.

It turns out that some conservatives and allies of Donald Trump are afraid that this may be going too far and that QAnon may even be a trolling effort meant to discredit them by showing them as loonies when they have enough trouble already on that front with Sacha Baron Cohen’s antics.

Pro-Trump media personalities are scrambling to prevent the QAnon conspiracy theory from catching on with the GOP grassroots, after a Trump rally last week brought the bizarre movement to mainstream attention.

The pundits are starting to worry that QAnon supporters — who believe in outlandish claims outlined in anonymous internet posts that Trump is engaged in a good-versus-evil struggle against a global pedophile cabal — will be used by Democrats and the media to make all Trump voters look crazy. Already, QAnon supporters are showing up at Trump rallies.

Lee Stranahan, a former Breitbart reporter who now hosts a radio show at Russian-owned Sputnik, said he has struggled to convince QAnon believers that their theory is fake.

“It’s not just dumb, it’s the dumbest thing I’ve ever seen,” Stranahan told The Daily Beast. “It’s unprecedentedly dumb in the history of American politics.”

So far, though, it’s not clear that the pushback from the various pro-Trump personalities will dissuade anyone. Their tweets attacking QAnon are often besieged with replies from fans who believe in QAnon and are now shocked to see that their political heroes don’t.

What did they expect? Trump and his spokespeople has been relentless in portraying any news outlet that is critical of him as liars. So naturally his base will gravitate to any news source that uncritically supports and praises him and think that only they are telling the truth. What choice do they have?
