A monstrous act by an evil radical. He filmed himself like he was playing a video game.
In the first few minutes, the gunman says, “Remember lads, subscribe to Pewdiepie,” a popular Swedish YouTuber who has spewed racial slurs and made anti-Semitic comments on his channel.
A Twitter account that appeared to be associated with the gunman posted photos of the weapons used in the attack footage. The user also appears to have shared links to a manifesto around the time the shooting began.
At more than 74 pages, the document outlines a white supremacist motivation for the attack. The writer, who identifies himself as a 28-year-old white man born in Australia, quotes the so-called 14 Words, the slogan shared by white supremacists worldwide. He said that while he supported white nationalist groups, he alone had decided to carry out the attack. He described the victims as “invaders” and accused them of seeking to replace white people. He wrote about attacking two mosques, one in Linwood and one in Christchurch. He focused on the latter because it was the largest, he wrote.
No more tolerance for fascists.
Hank_Says says
The irony of a white person from a former British colony – founded through invasion, dispossession and murder – moaning about being replaced by people from other countries never quite registers with the unhinged ethnofascist fuckwits doing the moaning, does it?
nomdeplume says
“No more tolerance for fascists“? There should never have been any tolerance for Fascists. World War 2 should have been the end of any tolerance for Fascists.

It’s yet another thing that originated from that hellsite, 8chan. How many horrors must originate from that site before lawmakers can take action against them? The revenge porn wasn’t enough? How about the organized harassment gangs? Still not enough? How about the child porn? No, they can still operate? How about the open organizing of neonazis? Still have to protect that free speech, eh? How about a planned mass shooting? That still doesn’t reach the threshold? How about multiple mass shootings and a live stream of one? I don’t know why, but I’m guessing we’ll see even more inaction.
It’s infuriating.

I will never understand why so many people have an axe to grind against the Jewish people. Not a single one has ever done me wrong. Nor has a single Muslim person, or a Hindu, or a Sikh, or Hindie or… You get it. I have been screwed over by good god fearing christians though. Though that is probably because where I’m from, that’s like 90% of the population.

The latest reports seems to indicate Australian gunman Brenton Tarrant had 3 accomplices, who have also been arrested, and that they may have planted bombs.

gijoel says
That’s suppose to be religion of love, huh?
Azkyroth, B*Cos[F(u)]==Y says
But they aren’t members of Mussolini’s party in Italy. So the label shouldn’t be used. Read some history.
Ichthyic says
go fuck yourself, Azky.
really.
not the right time, not the right place, not the right argument.
GO FUCK YOURSELF.

@8 Go read a dictionary. Then go fuck yourself.

Buy a pineapple and fuck yourself sideways Azky.
Fucking dictionary troll.

But, but, but, like freedom of speech! It is really important not to limit these people’s expressions of hateful ideologies, because, like, if you limit their speech they get frustrated and commit actions. It is important to let speech go completely unregulated, because then they only speak and free market of ideas and stuff and … logic!
I really love Terry Prattchet’s books, but recently I revisited his “Science on Discworld” series and his co-authors too expressed this idiotic sentiment about how UK is superior to continental Europe, because fascists are allowed to spew stuff there which would get them arrested on the continent. Even intelligent people are apparently often enamored with the idea that putting some mantinels around speech is a bad thing, evidence of the last century be damned.
Similar sentiments abound regarding USA’s superiority over everyone else, and the way Internet works, what USA does is what most of the world is stuck with. So until USA passes sensible laws limiting speech (which they will not, not in my lifetime) there always will be festering pockets of hate speech for these people safely to nourish and radicalize in.
Badland says
Jesus fucking christ Azkyroth.
Forty humans are dead at the hands of a right wing terrorist and you choose to quibble about the definition of fascist.
Fuck off
WMDKitty -- Survivor says
Azkyroth was only pointing out the stupidity of the “they’re not really Nazis” argument in a previous thread. Stop attacking him and look in the fucking mirror, you bunch of twits!
Badland says
WMD Kitty, can you point me at the thread? I haven’t seen it.
chrislawson says
Azkyroth chose a bad moment to use unlabelled sarcasm, but I’m pretty sure he was intending to insult the stupidity of hair-splitting fascism definers.
zenlike says
Azkyroth was sarcastically referring to nomdeplumes hair-splitting on the following thread:
https://freethoughtblogs.com/pharyngula/2019/03/13/jacob-wohl-may-have-smolletted-himself/
The “Read some history.” line directly mirrors nomdeplumes line of “Fun fact, read some history….”
Inappropriate to bring up on this thread? Probably. But please don’t let it derail this thread. How much gratification it might be to use Azkyroth as a lightning rod for your rightful anger over this terrorist attack, direct your anger at the terrorists and the terrorist enablers, eg the racist fucks who spread their hatred and engage in dehumanizing immigrants, muslims, and any person with slightly darker skin color.

I’m from Christchurch and know people who were at one of the Mosques. There is no possible way they are planning to “replace” white people in NZ. Hell, they were Palistinian refugees who fled Kuwait when Saddam invaded. They’re the ones who got replaced in their homeland.
I have never been so sickened in my life. Worse, I live in the UK (in the heart of hard Brexit land) now and have to face the fact that many of my neighbours are quite comfortable with all of this.
freddy72nz says
I’m in Christchurch, born and bred. I do not know anyone that supports the actions of these terrorists. I was at work in the central city when we heard sirens, a lot of sirens.
Got a call from a friend who has relations in the police and was told something serious was going down and not to leave the building.
We hunkered down, and called everyone we knew and let them know to hunker down.
Then it came on the news.
Cue several stressful hours of worrying about our loved ones, schools locked down, various rumours going around about what had happened.
Anyhow, home now, safe.
I wish there was something I could do to help those in need of comfort. Not going to send flowers, not going to pray, I want to do something that will actually make a difference.
But I don’t know what that is.

Aren’t there a lot of Maori Muslims in New Zealand? Somebody tell this shithead they were there first.
aziraphale says
Could we adopt a convention?
“Fascist” = “member of Mussolini’s party”
“fascist = “person sharing a significant amount of the Fascist ideology”
and similarly for “Nazi”

Ray, No. 4, if you want to be pissed off at the Jews for something they actually did, how about the invention of monotheism? (Yes, I know, they may not technically have invented it but they certainly got it going). It’s one thing to have a whole pantheon of gods that peacefully coexist; it’s another entirely to insist that yours is the one true god before whom every knee shall bow.
Which is why all three of the Abrahamic religions — Judaism, Christianity and Islam — are nothing but trouble. I’d like to think we’ll eventually outgrow them, if we don’t kill ourselves off first.

aziraphale, #21
No, we were doing just fine. There is no confusion.
mmfwmc says
@crocswsocks I know there are some, but I grew up in the most heavily Maori area of NZ and I never met one. They’re rare.
Ragutis says
So, I’ve been wondering why an Australian decided to do this in New Zealand, and it took an embarrassingly long time for the hypothesis that the availability of assault style weapons may have had a lot to do with it to come to mind.
Azkyroth, B*Cos[F(u)]==Y says
Yeah, that’s fair.
Yeah. When the page loaded I wound up centered on the comments and I saw an opening to pay that specific smug piece of shit Dictionary Human back for the piece of shit Dictionary Human smugness in the previous thread, without fully processing the actual context of this thread.
And I really can’t defend my actions here.
Because as much as I’d like to note with irony the handful of people who Just Fucking Watched while said smug piece of shit was smug piece of shitting now being shocked, SHOCKED…
And as much as I’d like to call attention to the fact that at least three different people in this thread have intentionally referred to me A) by the wrong name, for rhetorical purposes, which I understood to be frowned on around here (BUT WAIT IT’S ME), and B) looking at it another way, by a familiar diminutive which no one using it can even remotely claim a relationship substantiating the right to use, which is incredibly insulting and could probably be rendered “appropriation” if one squinted at it enough (BWIM)…
And as much as I appreciate the minority of supportive and just generally evenhanded and non-knee-jerk comments above, including from people I admittedly haven’t always been as fair to in the past…
And as much as it feels like yet another It’s A Trap that this blinkered-perfect opening occurred in a context that makes the blinkered-logical response incredibly tonedeaf…
Ultimately I, of all people, should know exactly how it feels to have a heartfelt attempt at processing a traumatic experience interrupted by someone shortsightedly trying to score points by insincerely quibbling about tangential language choices.
For that I apologize.
Giliell says
