  1. Saganite, a haunter of demons says

I have to admit, I didn’t really get the pointe of this one. The rest of it is both funny and sad. “Including away!” But in the last panel, is he saying that because he didn’t inflict the mortal wound in the first place? Is he saying it because, while he failed in saving him, he thinks he isn’t responsible for his failure? Or is he lying about his responsibility, as would be fitting with the theme of the comic overall, i. e. he realizes he is to blame, but lies to both her and himself as part of his “therapeutic” approach? Somebody help me, I seem to be making this more complicated than it actually is.

Is it a really good week or a really bad week when one can post the entirety of an Oglaf cartoon online, safe for work?

  3. komarov says

Saganite, since the good doctor looks rather distraught I’d say it’s self-therapy, i.e. a lie. It’s hard to tell with Oglaf. Both unrepentant scammers and what you might call ‘sincere quacks’ are regularly featured. Since this chap hasn’t been caught out in the way scammers usually are in Oglaf’s comics, I’d put him in the latter category even though he’s deliberately lying.

Nathanieltagg, does it have to be either good or bad? It’s an exception for Oglaf but it’s a good comic (as usual, I might add).

No, PZ, that doesn’t solve my problem at all.

    Thanks, komarov!

Saganite, it all seems clear to me. There’s a practitioner of lies, “let me heal you with the power of lies”. The lies take place, but the wounded person keeps bringing up the reality, rather than buying into the lies, right? So, the person dying, well, they died because they didn’t believe hard enough.

    @ Caine
Ah, now that’s yet another interpretation and it does make sense. Along the lines of faith healing, people didn’t pray or repent hard enough and therefore died and whatnot.
I think both yours and komarov’s (he’s lying to himself as self-therapy because he’s distraught) make sense, though.

Saganite, it’s not the naturopathic “doctor’s” fault his remedies didn’t stop the early stage cancer from metastasizing. He did everything he could! Homeopathy, acupuncture, reiki, crystals, laying of hands… Nothing worked! It’s not his fault.

Heh. I read this yesterday and thought “I bet PZ posts this.” Maybe I should offer my services as a psychic.

Awesome! I’ll immediately send you $100 and you will tell me afterwards who will win the next World Cup, right? If your prediction is not accurate, you will give me a 100% refund minus shipping and handling fees. Okay?

Hell, I’ll take you up on that. Barring an upset the pool of likely winning teams is very small, and the next World Cup is in 2018 so that’s about three years worth of interest on that $100 to help pay for the stamp and envelope.
