“No Hearing, No Vote”

Shockingly, blockingly,
Senate Republicans
Serve to the POTUS
A devious hitch;

Never you mind that it’s
Unconstitutional—
Bending the rules is
The way of the Mitch.

To no one’s surprise, but to the dismay of a strong majority, the GOP members of the Senate Judiciary Committee have confirmed that they will not allow any of Obama’s nominees to be considered. “No hearing, no vote”, before any nominee has even been named.

Here in Cuttletown, there are ads on TV asking people to call in to thank Sen. Kelly Ayotte for making sure the people’s voice is heard (and I am certain there are similar ads across the country wherever GOP senators lurk). See, the last election went the Republicans’ way, or so the argument goes. But of course, the last Senate election was for 1/3 of the members of that body. The last election for an individual to represent the entire country saw Obama win for a second time, very convincingly. And I know I am not the only one who voted with precisely this sort of situation in mind.

Time to contact your senators, those of my readers who have them.

    I am glad to see the Republicans are adopting Democratic ideals:
    ” if a Supreme Court justice resigns tomorrow or within the next several weeks, or resigns at the end of the summer, President Bush should consider following the practice of a majority of his predecessors and not — and not — name a nominee until after the November election is completed.” _John Kerry

    It is trivially easy to find instances of individuals saying that, or something similar. It is also trivially easy to show that this is false equivalence. When looking at context and at history, what the GOP as a governing body (as opposed to the bluster of individuals) is unprecedented. This is not saying that if roles were reversed we would not have seen the same from the Dems, but when looking at actual actions, rather than hypotheticals, it is the GOP who, institutionally, is going further than anyone before. But say what you need to to make yourself feel their actions are fair.
