The polls show that most Muslims are not peaceful. They may not involve themselves in terrorist acts, but a large number of Muslims support violence and women’s oppression. Whatever the polls say, I still believe Muslims will be better people if they get secular scientific education, if they live in secular state, under secular laws, and if they start learning about democracy, women’s rights and free speech when they are just little children.

I am rather skeptical about some of these findings. This is mere polemic dressed up as statistics. There have been times when you’d find Glasgow Rangers supporters sympathetic with terrorist organisations. I don’t really
think Amartya Sen would use this data.

      • Madhumati Adhikari says

You are right Taslima dear ! i fully support you ! But when you talk of scientific education, i wonder if the Islamic Majority states will ever do it, because Islam is a political move and not even a religion. To keep ppl out of otuch with scientific education is their first policy.

        • Parixit says

Religion and politics are always deeply intertwined. But it is rather disagreeable to say Islam is not a religion. The catholic church or Hindu sanatan dharma has played an equally important role in maintaining political structures over hundreds of years. In what way do you think is Islam different from these two so as to identify it purely as a political ideology and not a religion?

          • Anil says

Yes Islam is a political ideology. A system evolved by Mohamad to fulfill his Empirical Ambition. I have tons of data to support this theology.

          • Rose says

Paraxit–Because built within the Quran is not just a book of religion, like other religious texts. It’s a full book of societal control. It contains legal structure, political structure, and penal structure. It is a fully developed political system ready to be set up in any country at any time. All other religious entities focus on the heart and soul and behavior of the person. Quran focuses on controlling all of the peoples and determining their actions and their fate.

  2. Steersman says

    “Quite shocking”, indeed.

But maybe we should be thankful that, for example, some 59% of Pakistanis do not approve of attacks on Americans. And which suggests that the majority – maybe, at a stretch – of Muslims can actually integrate into Western cultures. However, Ibn Warraq argued in his Why I Am Not a Muslim that Islam is intrinsically antithetical to democracy.

In which case, one might suggest that what Western cultures are doing with their rather short-sighted immigration polices, is tantamount to clasping vipers to their breasts. If I were a Muslim, particularly a fundamentalist one, I would be a little apprehensive, if not more circumspect, on reading the historical record which is replete with cases of countries expelling or exiling various minorities and religions which didn’t mix well with their hosts.

    • Hugor Hill says

I would argue that most religions are intrinsically antithetical to democracy and secularism in their original core form. The difference between Islam and most religions is that Islam today is stuck in a rut and unwilling to accommodate changes. Most Muslims still continue to take lessons on how to live their lives from an obsolete book

We know that the Bible condoned slavery. The Hindu scriptures state explicitly that women’s sole goal in life must be taking care of their family and are not capable of anything else. But you would find very few Christians and Hindus who would stand by these teachings. Most religions have learnt to move on; Islam, not so much.

I would also argue that the western immigration policies are actually rather far-sighted. Race and religion problems exist when people think of it in terms of us-versus-them. But because of immigration people can actually observe the other race and/or religion and note that despite our differences we are not so different after all. This is merely my opinion; it have nothing to back up my hypothesis. But is the only thing that might work to bring in global peace.

      • Steersman says

        Hugor Hill said (#2.1):

I would argue that most religions are intrinsically antithetical to democracy and secularism in their original core form.

You wouldn’t get much if any disagreement from me on that point. Seems most religions are rather hierachical and authoritarian – largely the antithesis of democracy. And while Jesus reportedly said “render unto Caesar that which is Caesars, and unto God that which is God’s” which seems be predicated on a separation of church and state, it seems that, in practical terms, Christians are all too ready to ignore that principle.

I would also argue that the western immigration policies are actually rather far-sighted. Race and religion problems exist when people think of it in terms of us-versus-them.

There might well be some justification for that perspective. However, it also seems like it is a two-way street which many Muslims (40% to 60%) insist is only one way – their way. I think if they continue to insist on that, and push-comes-to-shove then they are likely to be badly disillusioned, and seriously discomfited.

  3. wtfwhatever says

As shocking as this is, I can go worse: 95% of online feminists think misandry ain’t a real thing, or that women aren’t equal initiators of domestic violence, or that malicious false rape accusations should go unpunished.

Feminists and Islam, two peas in a pod.

    • Steersman says

I’ll certainly agree that there are some brands of feminism that exhibit degrees of dogmatism that are of the same kind if not the same degree as that exhibited by some Muslim fundamentalists.

But I will seriously question your “95% of online feminists think misandry ain’t a real thing”. You have any statistics to back up that claim? Certainly many “online feminists” – many over on the AtheismPlus site – seem to be of that view. But “95%” seems to be a serious stretch.

    • Parixit says

I dont think feminists reject the idea of misandry or domestic violence by women. They think it is not ‘equal’ in magnitude with misogyny or domestic violence by men.

  4. Steersman says

    Well Wisher:

Maybe a straightforward question, but a rather complicated answer. A couple of relevant quotes from a rather detailed and admirable book – highly recommended:

    A note from recent history:

Two other skeptics also doubted Islam’s ability to provide any solutions to modern-day problems. In 1986, a Cairo lawyer, Nur Farwaj, wrote an article criticizing the sharia, the Islamic law, as “a collection of reactionary tribal rules unsuited to contemporary societies.” Also in 1986, Egyptian lawyer and essayist Faraj Fada published a pamphlet under the aggressive title of NO to Sharia. The work argued for the separation of religion and state because Islam could not provide the secular constitutional framework necessary for running a modern state. [pg 7]

On the question of types of Islam:

Even more dishonest is the continuing attempt to exonerate Islam itself—especially by using phrases such as “Islamic fundamentalist,” “Muslim fanatic,” and so on.

The term “Islamic fundamentalist “is in itself inappropriate, for there is a vast difference between Christianity and Islam. Most Christians have moved away from the literal interpretation of the Bible; for most of them, “It ain’t necessarily so.” Thus we can legitimately distinguish between fundamentalist and non-fundamentalist Christians. But Muslims have not moved away from the literal interpretation of the Koran: all Muslims—not just a group we have called “fundamentalist”—believe that the Koran is literally the word of God.

The preceding examples of mob riots show that ordinary Muslims very easily take offense at what they perceive to be insults to their holy book, their prophet, and their religion. Most ordinary Muslims supported Khomeini’s fatwa against Rushdie. [pg 11]

Although I would dispute his assertion about “most Christians have moved away from the literal interpretation of the Bible”. The Pew Forum surveys generally give the lie to that contention, although it seems, from recollection, more true of Christians than of Muslims.

    Similarities with fascism:

The Scottish essayist [Carlyle] sees the Arabs in general as active but also meditative, with wild strong feelings, and they possess that supreme quality “religiosity.” Their religion is heartily believed. What is most important is sincerity, not truth—it hardly matters what is believed as long as it is believed with a fierceness that goes beyond mere reason. “The very falsehoods of Mahomet are truer than the truths of [an insincere man].”

Russell and others have seen in Carlyle’s ideas the intellectual ancestry of fascism. Carlyle’s fascism can be seen not only in his uncritical adulation of the strong leader, but also in his sentimental glorification of violence, cruelty, extremism, and irrationalism, in his contempt for reason: “A candid ferocity … is in him; he does not mince matters.” [pg 24]

From the first chapter, section therein titled Trahison des Clercs [Betrayal by the Intellectuals ?]:

Another disturbing development in recent years explains the uncritical attitude of Islamicists toward Islam. A British university dismissed one scholar from his academic post as lecturer in Islamic studies because of pressure from the Saudi Arabian sponsors, who decided that they did not like the way he was teaching Islam. [pg 32; D. Easterman, New Jerusalems; pgs 92-93]

Entirely consistent with the recent kowtowing by other English Universities to permit gender segregation which should by rights, I think, raise a stink in the nostrils of every last person in Britain – if not the World – with any commitment to any brand of feminism – or humanism.

And a last quote or two from the last chapter on Islam in the West:

Britain is said to have approximately one-and-a-half million Muslims, a majority from the Indian subcontinent. Most, if not all, are there of their own free will, seeking to better their economic situation. In the last fifteen years, many Muslims have made it clear that they have no intention of being assimilated into the host society; instead, it is up to the host society to change, to accord them separate rights, and separate privileges. Some of their most articulate spokesmen have spelled out what they hope to achieve. Dr Zaki Badawi, former Director of the Islamic Cultural Centre, London, wrote: “A proselytizing religion cannot standstill. It can either expand or contract. Islam endeavors to expand in Britain. Islam is a universal religion. It aims at bringing its message to all corners of the earth. It hopes that one day the whole of humanity will be one Muslim community, the Ummah.”

One might quibble about his “many Muslims”, but I think that Taslima’s statistics suggest rather strongly that that “many” constitutes a very large percentage – possibly in the 40% to 60% range, depending on the particular social issue being discussed.

A report on Muslim attitudes to education in Britain, prepared by the Islamic Academy, Cambridge, and the Islamic Cultural Centre, London, makes it clear that Muslims are not happy about the secular approach to education. Muslims want to keep their basic, Islamic values, which are threatened by the values of the host community, even if it means disobeying the laws of Britain. As Hiskett justly observes:

At no point in this joint statement do the scholarly authors address the possibility that the only real way to avoid lifestyles that are “destructive of basic [Islamic]values” is not to have migrated into them in the first instance; but rather to have remained within those vast areas of the Islamic Ummah where the lifestyles remain consonant with these values. Muslim spokesmen, when faced with such a rejoinder, will argue that many of them—the second and third generations—have been born in the United Kingdom and that it is therefore unreasonable to propose this solution. On the contrary, the proper conclusion, so it would seem from their public statements, is that the receiving society must now change to accommodate them and not the other way round. This is surely the crux of the argument that has increasingly vexed public opinion in Britain since these Muslim immigrants have become sufficiently articulate to engage public attention. [pgs 352-353]

Doesn’t look particularly compatible to democracy or other secular values to me.

But I think the whole book is a rather damning indictment of virtually every branch of Islam, with the possible exceptions of explicitly secular ones and Sufism, and of the rather short-sighted policies which permit the types of shenanigans Warraq describes in exhaustive detail.

  5. VADIRAJ C S (@vschanna) says

Scary data indeed. Hope Muslims the world over will have, the courage to face these disturbing data, and start taking correctives. Wonder why none of the surveys cover Indian Muslims, who constitute the second largest among the Muslims in the world.

  6. Anil says

The Data is indeed right and conservative. There is a website run by EX MUSLIMS. Every one who wants to know why Muslims create problems for every one world over then this is a very authentic source. The website is http://www.prophetofdoom.net

Just go to the Islamic Quotes on this website and find out how the Islamic Teachings are commanding every Muslim to do all kinds of Evil things.

This site gives answers to majority of the Questions of why Muslims:-

    1. Become Terrorists and support Terrorism
    2. Do War
    3. Do Jihad
    4. Become Martyrs/Mercenaries
    5. Become Militants
    6. Become Murderers
    7. Do Torture of Non Muslims
    8. Do Thievery & promote Slavery
    9. Destroy Peace
    10. Destroy Peaceful Muslims
    11. Do Deception
    12. Are Intolerant
    13. Believe in Demons & Devils
    14. Become Immoral
    15. Love Money
    16. Have Lust
    17. Hate Jews
    18. Hate Christians
    19. Promote Racism
    20. Torture Women
    21. Promote Stupidity
    22. Purposely violate Law of the Non Muslim Country

      • Anil says

I am not Muslim hating person. I have Muslim friends and I say the same thing to them and they have no replies as I have authenticated verses from Islam. You can say that I am Islam hating person.

A action has emminence by the motive. Same action having different motives cannot be compared. A bullet fired by sodier on border on enemy soldier to protect his nation and a bullet fired by a Muslim to loot a Non Muslim cannot be compared. First one is Servive to Nation and Second one is Murder!

I was just thinking why Muslims behave like this so gradually I came to know all the things in Islam!

I am speaking about what is written in Islamic Texts and how it promotes all the evils because Muslims believe that it is the final word and they have to obey it.

Now there are only 2 ways: Either Edit the Koran and other Islamic texts, which they will not accept or finish the Islam. Finishing Islam does not mean finishing Muslims but to finish the religion by doing the things which will finish the faith. Doing the things which Islam says cannot be done. For example it is written in Islam that no one can attack Kaba as it is protected by Birds who throw stones on any one who attacks, so If the Nukes target the Kaba than the eyes of the Muslims will open when no bird will come to save it.
Muslims say so much about Qayamat but they will not tell when asked when is the Qayamat, so this riducules them.
Ask Muslims that where is Allah now? Is he on Vacation till Qayamat? And they have no answer.

In recent past the American F-16’s were protecting the Kaba during Gulf War. World over whereever Muslims are in Sizable number they start troubling the Non Muslims and Non Muslim Government.

        .
        .
This is not the case with the Hindus.

There are much more Hindus in America and Europe but they are not Terrorists or threat to world peace.

Hindu scripts do not ask to convert Non Hindus. Parsis came to India after Iran was Plundered by Muslims, ever after so many Centuries still they are not converted by Hindus and both Religion people respect each other. These same parsis had gone to Muslim country there would have been no Parsis left in mere a decade.

Hindu scripts do not ask to hate Muslims, Christians, Jews, or any other religious people.

Hinduism is the only religion which does not require its adherents to follow a very strict and singular path to go to God but it gives various options, and the adherent can choose any path or devise his own path as done by various Hindu Saints or choose no path and enjoy life being a Hindu.

There is not a single Hindu Book that they have to follow strictly and compulsorily again it depends on the adherent which Book to follow or not to follow.

Hindus are reformists so they accept change as per the times.

There is no compulsion for Hindus to go to Temples on particular day or particular time but the individual can decide when to go. There is no compulsion to go to Temple. But in other Religions it is compulsary to go on particular day and particular time or else that person is a non believer.

Your stay in India was not jeopardised by Hindus but by Muslims even though there are around 80% Hindus still you feel Hindus and Muslims are same?

There’s no surprise in hearing “moderate muslims” support terrorism. Many so-called “moderate christians” support anti-abortion groups, including those who bomb clinics and kill doctors (aka terrorists). Many jewish people who claim not to hate Palestinians keep voting for political parties that order the military to commit mass murder and other war crimes. And the same is true of many other religions.

People will always support “their own” over “the other”, even when they disagree with them, even when “their own” are oppressing them. “Better the devil you know than the devil you don’t” goes the old saying.

But even worse are those who do agree and just don’t want to say it publicly. They support atrocities behind closed doors and through money and votes.
