The annual White House Correspondents Dinner is an event that should cease to exist. It represents the worst kind of schmoozing between journalists, the people they cover, and celebrities and only serves to cement their sense of insider solidarity against all of us yahoos on the outside. One of the good things that Donald Trump has done is boycott the event since he became president. It is true that he likely did it because he is thin-skinned and could not take the inevitable jokes at his expense, but I hope his action leads to the event being canceled.
The 2018 event was held last night and the keynote speaker was former Daily Show correspondent Michelle Wolf. She was less funny than scathing, calling out Trump and his allies and the media for their complicity in promoting Trump, and causing some to clutch their pearls and call for smelling salts, and others to leap to her defense.
Here’s her speech in full.

Apparently Trump’s feelings were hurt. This is the guy who says nasty shit about pretty much anyone, and he got his feelings hurt. What a snowflake.
jrkrideau says
Presumably Trump did not attend as he remembers the Obama episode.

RWNJs: Fuck your feelings!
Comedian makes jokes about a conservative.
RWNJs: How dare you hurt our feelings!
I was reading one outraged conservative on Twitter who literally has as a profile picture the words “FREEDOM OF SPEECH -- Because my rights are more important than your feelings.” These people have absolutely no sense of self-awareness.

First, @Tabby, No. 3, well said.
Second, Mano is spot on about he dinner itself. I wrote:
Yes, I know the dinner is supposed to be a charity event, but this has always sent the wrong message.

Gee, a comic getting an insult in at the WHCD. It reminds me of the horrified readers of Sports Illustrated when they find nearly naked ladies in the yearly swimsuit edition. It happens every year.

Tabby Lavalamp, #3.
Sixteen hours before the WHCD, a tweet from Mike Huckerbee promoting his own show:
After his daughter was the butt of a couple of jokes, however;
Followed up with (emph. mine)
Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow.
Tabby Lavalamp says
Acolyte, yup, I saw that going around Twitter. If Huckabee couldn’t be a conservative, a Christian, or a Republican if he wasn’t a hypocrite too.
