Over to you Marco, once you’re done playing

As we head into the final weeks before the Iowa caucuses on February 1, if you live in that state expect to see a barrage of ads from each candidate featuring the familiar Republican story that the country is besieged by dangers on all fronts that is threatening the very existence of the republic and only their particular candidate knows what to do to meet the challenge.

A Super PAC supporting Ted Cruz has released a rather vicious attack depicting Marco Rubio as childish and not having the level of seriousness necessary to be president. It will be interesting to see how Rubio responds.

That’s a bit below the belt.

First, whatever happened to not going after fellow Republicans?

Second, all of those crises are really tiny storms magnified by rhetoric. ISIS is not an existential threat. Russia is simply seeking to dominate territory it historically controlled, and, as of last telling, more Mexicans were fleeing the country than trying to get in.

It’s like worrying that somewhere out there there is a termite determined to eat your house. It is a problem that bears observation, and perhaps some prevention. Not panic.

Besides, while the advertised threats are more hypothetical and rhetorical than real, fantasy football is about real money. He’s got a $10 side bet riding.

Rubio should respond with an ad showing that he is no more childish and unqualified than his competition. At least then there’d be one honest ad.
