The anti-gay bigots are feeling under siege. Not only are they are upset that the word ‘gay’ has been appropriated so that it can’t be used to mean happy anymore, they find it an abomination that gay people are now publicly visible and openly present everywhere, adopting children, and otherwise acting like ordinary people. They see the Supreme Court decision to legalize same-sex marriages as an ominous sign and as first step towards the day when the only marriages that can take place are gay marriages.
But the last straw for Sandy Rios of the American Family Association (any group that has the term ‘Family’ in its title is likely to be infested with bigots) is the rainbow. She says that gays have commandeered the rainbow for their propaganda purposes, when all god-fearing people know that the Big Man in the Sky invented the rainbow to send us a specific message, and using it for other purposes was going to make him really mad.
American Family Association official Sandy Rios warned on her radio program yesterday that the Obama administration’s decision to light up the White House in rainbow colors in celebration of the Supreme Court’s marriage equality decision was “an unbelievable affront to God” that will have “consequences.” According to Rios, God will lift His hand of protection from America in response to the court’s ruling and the celebratory rainbow images, thereby increasing the threat of terror attacks on the United States.
The rainbow, she said, “was God’s sign to mankind that he would never destroy the earth again by flood,” so if “you take his symbol and you use it for a sign of sexual behavior that is ungodly, unallowed,” it will have “some consequence.”
“My grief is for you, because you don’t understand what you just did. You don’t understand,” she told gay rights activists. “Again, now, to get more practical about this, the terror threat against this nation has gone up exponentially.”
The Hulk has nothing on god when it comes to the destruction that he creates when he gets mad and in a smiting mood, so we should not take Rios’s warning lightly. We also know that in his mysterious way, god tends to be pretty indiscriminate in his smiting, using blunt instruments like floods, tornados, droughts, and the like that cause a lot of collateral damage that harms even his own flock.
The great mystery is why their god has the power to do so much smiting on a large scale but not the power to prevent the things that make him mad enough to want to do so.
