I’m not particularly enamored with pennies either.
I remember in the summer of ’74 there was a penny shortage and many merchants in Colorado where I was attending Colorado State University at the time stopped using them. They simply rounded the final price. If your tab was $1.32, they charged you $1.30. If you owed $2.47, they rounded up to $2.50.

I don’t recall anyone complaining.
I suppose the same could be said about nickles.
