He’s polluting everything

I was browsing pubmed for some interesting articles when I noticed that every article is tainted with this stupid announcement.

NIH Websites Are Changing
Get the Latest Updates and FAQs on the transition
Per Executive Order 14434, federal agencies are now using “Super Intelligence” (SI) in place of “Artificial Intelligence” (AI). You may see both terms across NIH content during this transition.

Yuck. Our president thinks he can meddle in things he does not understand and lacks the ability to comprehend by simply renaming things, and the NIH is going along with it. So disappointed.

It’s not intelligence, let alone “super” intelligence.

All this renaming shit is just more evidence that the current president is nothing more than a garden variety troll and should be treated as such. Unfortunately, the media take the bait every time and he just gobbles it up.

  2. raven says

The only people I see using Super Intelligence are people forced to do so.
Which is Fedeal employees who get a government pay check.

Everyone else just ignored it and moved on.
Even Google calls their AI Overviews, “AI Overviews”.

  3. microraptor says

“AI” is not intelligent n any meaningful sense of the word and yet it still manages to be smarter than Trump.

  4. robert79 says

Imagine a science class where students are required to report their results in SI, but are not allowed to use SI.

Of course, Trump probably thinks the metric system is some evil European thingy…

  5. says

As I have said for weeks, it should be called Stupor Intelligence!
And, we should all be chanting E.T.T.D. Everything Trump Touches Dies.

    It gets worse.
It was just discovered that a major Alaska natural gas project has secret Russian funding.
The CEO reported it and resigned.
This violates more than one US law. It is also likely that there is way more to this story than has been disclosed so far.
It wouldn’t surprise me if the Trump crime family is involved in it somewhere.

Secret Russian Funding Revealed in Trump-Putin Energy Scheme
Erkki Forster Sat, October 24, 2026 at 2:08 PM PDT Daily Beast

A multibillion-dollar project to tap into natural gas in Alaska pursued by the Trump administration has received secret funding from a sanctioned Russian company, according to a report.

Polar LNG, an American energy startup, is seeking to buy Russian technology to extract natural gas from Alaska’s North Slope and ship it to allies abroad, portraying the project as a decidedly American undertaking.

But Joel Riddle, who resigned as the company’s chief executive last month, told The New York Times that he was misled about the source of the company’s funding. He said he had been made to believe that the money came from a firm in the United Arab Emirates, when at least some of it actually came from Novatek, one of Russia’s biggest energy companies. Novatek is under partial U.S. sanctions.

Trump is a dumbass. He thinks people don’t like AI because it’s a bad name and he can fix it by renaming it.

But also, to all those who are still asleep and think AI is “stupid” or its all “marketing PR”, AI is already better than all humans in theoretical math/computer science and by a wide margin. This is from David Harvey one the two authors of the best previous O(n log n) algorithm for Integer multiplication:

I would like to congratulate the Company, or more precisely its employees, for creating a Model
with these astonishing capabilities. My understanding is that none of these people actually know
how the Model works. Nor do they, for the most part, understand the content of the papers that
    they just publicly released.

I would also like to congratulate the unnamed Model itself. Both for its brilliant ideas, and also
for its perseverance against unfathomable odds.

I assume that by now the Company’s employees are aware of the pain and profound sense of loss
that this event has caused in my professional community. I believe that they are decent and hard-
working people, whose efforts are sincerely aimed at making the world a better place. I hope and
    pray that they succeed.

Some of my colleagues believe that this is a nefarious Company, whose only goal is profit, if
necessary at our community’s expense. Perhaps there is some truth to this, but I think it is
missing the larger point. The fact is that there now exists an automated system that can perform
mathematical research — at least the part that involves “solving hard problems” — far better than
any human. Now that such a system has been demonstrated, it is clear that results like these were
bound to start appearing soon anyway. I do not blame the Company for getting there first. Who
got there first is an irrelevant detail, a historical footnote.

@3: Any measurement system used by humanity should base itself on the number of digits.

Which, given the poor US (and generally English-speaking nations) record on actually followed-and-enforced-with-consequences-to-employers-for-violations safety precautions for maritime, agricultural, and industrial workers, would lead to utter chaos here. So we don’t. We just choose an illogical panoply of systems completely unrelated to the number of (remaining) digits.

Fuller quote and citation for #8. A pdf.
David Harvey – On the recently proposed o(n log n) integer multiplication algorithm

the paper claims a complexity bound of the form O(n(log n)^(1−ε)) for some small positive constant ε. This bound is of course utterly ridiculous. Previously the best bound was O(n log n) (big “O”), and this was widely believed to be optimal. The dump contains many other ludicrous results, but most of them were at least supposed to be true. This one was not. Nevertheless, this is a serious Company with a track record of doing serious things, so we should make an effort to take the claim seriously.

[*lotharloo @8 quote comes from here*]
    […]
I doubt that it is possible for humans to be taken seriously as authors of mathematics research papers for much longer, for the same reason that we no longer accept written assignments from our undergraduates. It is possible that we have already reached this point; we will soon find out. This is not the place to dig into my views on the wider impacts of AI, but I can recommend the excellent blog by Zvi Mowshowitz (https://thezvi.substack.com/), whose perspective on AI is broadly similar to my own.
    […]
I suspect that very few people (i.e., humans) worldwide understand all the details of the 2021 algorithm, but I happen to be one of them. […] The bottom line is that I think the claimed result is plausible. I have not actually read the paper. In fact, there are three closely related papers [TC26a], [TC26b], [TC26c], and I have not read any of them. I tried, but soon gave up.

Instead, I asked Fable to explain [TC26a] to me. Fable seems to understand the argument and thinks that it is correct. […] I asked questions, and then asked more questions, and drilled down towards the core of the problem. Gradually I started to understand parts of the argument. I have seen enough now to arrive at the tentative belief that the main result is possibly correct (notice that I choose my words very carefully), and that the bound O(n(log n)^α) has the right shape. […] as far as Fable seems to be concerned, the exposition in [TC26a] is perfectly clear.
    […]
It would be good to have a formalised proof of the o(n log n) result, for example in Lean. As far as I can tell, one does not yet exist. […] My confidence in the result would be increased greatly if such a formalisation existed, assuming that the initial definitions and statement of the main theorem had been checked by a (human?) Lean expert.
