In the tenth panel he’ll be carrying an AR-15 and heading to his local polling station to defend democracy from the brainwashed masses.

Of course this is only micro-evolution because no real new species arose.

Apart from that, it is a pretty accurate description of the development of the Republican Party in the last decade or so.

  3. imback says

Well, many of their kids are rejecting them, so hopefully MAGA will be a generation-or-two blip in the fossil record.

  4. tacitus says

The “Every election we lose is rigged” sentiment has been stewing in right-wing Republican circles for at least the past 25 years. The evolution has been more a metastasizing of the cancer of far right resentment.

Meanwhile, the cartoonist’s own party is funding and advocating in favor of genocide (and has now admitted that they’re sending troops to assist in carrying it out, and in expanding it into a regional war… great jorb!) (and also ejected anybody who continues to talk about it from participating in the campaign), actively running on kicking out more immigrants than Republicans, and has officially stopped standing against the death penalty, to say nothing of increasing fossil fuel extraction and directly providing national funds to police. At this point, I wouldn’t lift a finger to assist anybody who supports either party. Everybody who supports either the Democrats or the Republicans is actively trying to destroy the country and the world, and the Democrats are, if anything, even more oblivious than the Republicans to how much they have changed their positions.

    Mr Bothsiderist:

Everybody who supports either the Democrats or the Republicans is actively trying to destroy the country and the world ridiculous hyperbole, and the Democrats are, if anything, even more oblivious than the Republicans to how much they have changed their positions. missing the point that it's about people changing to conform to party ideology, not about the change of the parties' ideology

  7. John Morales says

One should face facts: MAGA is a cult of personality, and it’s a Republican phenomenon; there is no equivalent Democratic cult.

  8. StevoR says

Both sides are bad posts are specifically designed to encourage Americans not to vote. Keeping people from voting is literally the only way Republicans can stay in office. If you don’t see the connection you have a problem.

At 55% voter turnout Republicans win.
At 60% voter turnout Democrats win..
At 65% voter turnout Democrats win – in a walk.(That was Obama in 08.)
At 70% voter turnout there isn’t a Republican party anymore.

This isn’t a competition of ideas, we’ve won that competition long ago Its a competitition for engagement. Vote blue.

I think those things are spot on.

@8. The Tankie accelerationist, sorry not sorry, the Vicar :

NO the parties are NOT the same. The Repugs are literal Nazis. The Democrats are not.

The Repugs are using literal nazi language and sources and promiting an actual Christianist White Supremacist ideology. Project 2025 and openly tlking about never having elections again and being dictators from day one and bloodbaths and retribution against those who “wronged convicted felon and proven rapist Trump and so on.

The Tankie Vicars lack of supporting citations for his claims is also duly noted. ( Vicar used to actually porvide sources sometimes, seems he’s no longer doing that..)

  9. StevoR says

Vicar who are NOT actual nazis are the same as those who are. This is fractally wrong at every level.

He also seems to think that punishing the Democratic party by costing them this election will push them to the Left It t won’t. We know that from history eg 2016 election and aftermath, 200 election and aftermath..

Plus that it will somehow help the Palestinians when it absolutely will NOT – Trump will wipe them out and.enable Putin to wipe out and genocide Ukraine and then very likely committ further invasions and genocides in his deluded goal of rebuilding the former Tsarist Russian empire. Two or likely more genocides rather than the one happeneing in Gaza currently that the Repugs wuill greenlight completely given all we know they’ve said and done.

Trump will also be absolutely catastriophic for the Climate and human rights esp women’s reproductive rights and oh yeah, once again, he is a literal fascist.

Vote Blue like lives depend on it because they do.

Voting for Kamala Harris is the ONLY way to stop Trump.

Vicar and others if you feel any of that is wrong , please put an actual logical case against it.

  10. StevoR says

Tidbits suggesting Trump’s interest in Hitler, the Holocaust and Nazi Germany have appeared with growing frequency since his first campaign in 2016. There are unconfirmed reports attributed to people close to him suggesting Trump finds some of the Nazi leader’s qualities aspirational — even as he believes, as he stated in 2017, that the Holocaust was a “horrible evil.”

Trump’s ex-wife Ivana claimed in 1990 that he kept a book of Hitler’s collected speeches, My New Order, in his bedside cabinet. Of course, Trump was just a tabloid celebrity at the time. As a politician, Trump has sometimes used rhetoric similar to that once used by Hitler to describe what he perceives as American social ills; he has privately compared himself to Hitler on multiple occasions; and he has even praised Hitler for his economic policy. Here’s a timeline of known instances in which Trump has invoked Hitler and the Nazis, vaguely or explicitly, since the start of his political career.

As of May 22nd this year.

The day after the presidential debate at which former President Donald Trump spread a false story about Haitian immigrants eating pets in Springfield, Ohio, Christopher Pohlhaus, leader of the national neo-Nazi group Blood Tribe, took to his Telegram channel to take credit.

Pohlhaus, a Marine-turned-tattoo artist known as “Hammer” to his hundreds of followers, wrote Blood Tribe had “pushed Springfield into the public consciousness.”

Members of his hate group agreed. “The president is talking about it now,” a member wrote on Gab, a Twitter-like service popular with extremists. “This is what real power looks like.”

Yeah Vicar, as usual, great incite from you, a party who knows that an utterly stupid number of their opponents, and Americans, are so far up the ass of Israel that they are literally incapable of recognizing what is happening as genocide, but still needs to get those people to vote for them, if at all possible, is exactly the same thing as a man who, according to his wife, kept copies of Hitler’s speeches next to his bed, to read at night, doesn’t give a crap about anyone, never mind Palestinians, and has already previously threatened to shoot US citizens and worse (including hints about just blowing countries he didn’t like out of existence). I absolutely hate the “practicality” of trying to placate the idiots who can’t see how far gone Israel has become, and refuse to appose them, along with rational people, but I understand it, and the f-ing difference between, “Everyone who is a Democrat is totally in favor of what is happening!”, which you advocate as reality, vs., “They couldn’t stop it, even if the few among them that matter, aka Biden, was actually willing to piss of the rest of the idiots in the country, and flush the election down the toilet in the process.”

Do I, we, or anyone here, really have to repeat that the simple reality is that voting for some other third party, until/unless we fix the system so that is a viable option, especially right now, makes about as much sense as insisting no one shop of Walmart or Amazon, but instead buy things from Store X in their tiny, insular small town, whose own city council just started talking about both allowing a Walmart, and a Amazon distribution center to open on its outskirts?

But, yeah, keep being utterly delusional and claiming that everyone, other than the imaginary people you think we should be voting for, and will definitely win, if only everyone voted for them, are the solution to this… Its so #$!#@$ helpful.

  13. F.O. says

I agree there is enough difference between the two parties to warrant my hope that the outright fascist party loses.

However, what bothers me is that any criticism of the Dems is answered with “BUT THEN THE FASCISTS WIN” as if people couldn’t tell the difference between accepting that you need to vote for the lesser evil versus actively cheering for evil (lesser or not) and gaslighting people about said evil, hiding the problem and refusing to think about solutions.
(I’m not accusing anyone here, my impression is that most Pharyngula commenters do understand nuance.)

Gaza, fracking, covid, police… It should be obvious that the Dems are still horrible and that people should start being a bit more critical of the system as a whole, but we can’t have that.

  14. says

Hey, FO, Trump wins, there are no more elections and no more democratic party that you can “push left” Trump says so, his crony Vance says so, his handlers from Russia and the Heritage Foundation say so.

People always ask how Hitler could gain power despite laying down his entire plan for genocide and imperialist warfare in his book. Well, you provide a fine example of why that ultimately didn’t matter. The far-left in Germany also thought they had the luxury of infighting and targeting moderates primarily instead of the fascists.

  15. Rob Grigjanis says

    F.O. @17:

    I’m not accusing anyone here…

And yet, here you are. Is there anywhere else you could peddle the fucking obvious, where it might make a difference?

  16. Kagehi says

But, but.. Trump doesn’t agree with everything in the Project 2025 manifesto, which he also doesn’t have any clue what it contains. He said so himself!! lol

Single most insane thing I have ever seen from other people are the video interviews with Maga supporters, in which a laundry lists of his crimes are mentioned, going all the way back to when he originally owned housing projects, which he refused to let black people rent, and the nuts crap like the year he insisted that he hated Christmas decorations, and therefor his housing complex should not have decorations (even inside people’s own apartments), and their answer is, “I am voting for him anyway. He will hold those evil Democrats accountable!” Its like endorsing the arrival of an army, which intends to burn your city down, and has already started lighting buildings on fire, because they claim to hate your neighbors more, and you imagine they will burn said neighbors city down first, decide they have enough, and leave you alone. I cannot comprehend how they think this makes any f-ing sense.
