There’s really no ambiguity in Musk’s politics

Go away, libertarian/fascist/racist profiteer.

If we don’t get a “red wave,” will you move back to South Africa?

Oh, wait, is the “red wave” what Trump was referring to in his recent “blood bath” comments?

We ought to nationalize Space X, but since our government doesn’t actually care about the inequities of capitalism (performative, vaguely-lefty-sounding slogans from the two-faced Democratic Party notwithstanding) that’s not likely to happen.

  11. Akira MacKenzie says

You can interpret Trump’s “Bloodbath” nonsense one of two ways:

    1) If Trump loses, he and his fascist goons won’t be there to protect us from those murderous MS-13, BLM, Antifa, and transsexuals who the Democrats will let run riot over our embattled nation.

    2) If Trump loses, his oppressed, freedom-loving followers will righteously go out and make Jan 6 look like a case of littering in comparison.

Either way, Trump’s comments sound more like a mob boss’ than a politician’s. Sadly, our government doesn’t have a great track record of getting rid of mobsters or fascists. If anything, we tend to back them.

It is a bit more trivial, although the false advertising aspect is certainly consistent, I am annoyed that Musk calls his largest rocket a ‘Starship’. Now, if I don’t get elected, it’s going to be a bloodbath for the whole – that’s gonna be the least of it. It’s going to be a bloodbath for the country. That’ll be the least of it.

See the part I put in bold? Can you read it? Does that say ‘for the auto industry?’

No, it does not. This is something Trump does all the time. He issues open threats with a half-assed wink and a nudge, his taint-licking chuds say ‘it was just sarcasm libturds,’ while in the background groups like the Heritage Foundation assemble a fucking army to enact Trump’s every bloodthirsty whim on day one of presidency.

The bloodbath will come if Trump is elected, or otherwise steals the presidency. I have no doubt that a few of the slimebags who worship Trump will commit acts of terrorism if he loses. They may even attempt a coup again.

Make no mistake (and I know you weren’t making a mistake so much as being flagrantly dishonest): Trump and his supporters intend to commit mass violence one way or the other after the election, and that’s absolutely what he was saying in that quote.

  14. says

His supporters are shrinking to nothing. They’re leaving him in disgust upon finding out where the campaign money given to him will go and his succumbing to dementia that’s rapidly worsening by the day. He won’t have anyone left to support him when he goes to prison and/or dies.

Which means Trump and Biden are about equal right now.

I gave up understanding how this could be years ago.
If you have some data that says Trump’s support is fading, by all means post it.
We could all use some good news these days.

AFAICT, even if Trump ended up completely demented, his supporters would still vote for him. At that point, he is just a meat puppet for people like Musk, Bannon, Ted Cruz, and all the other Fascists of the GOP.

Biden holds narrow lead over Trump in national survey
BY CAROLINE VAKIL – 03/18/24 6:00 AM ET

President Biden is narrowly leading former President Trump by 1 point, according to a new national survey first shared with The Hill.

A poll released by the Democratic super PAC Progress Action Fund, which was conducted by the left-leaning firm Public Policy Polling, showed Biden leading Trump 46 percent to 45 percent. Another 9 percent said they were not sure.

The polling falls within the survey’s margin of error of plus or minus 3.4 percentage points.

The poll also found Biden had a 39 percent approval rating, compared to 55 percent who said they disapproved of his job as president and 6 percent who said they were unsure.

Half of respondents separately had an unfavorable opinion of Trump, compared to 43 percent who had a favorable opinion and 7 percent who said they were not sure.

  16. Tethys says

  21. Kagehi says

    @20 Raven

Thing is, I tend to agree, tentatively, with the assessment that he likely can’t win. The polls are of “likely voters”, this leaves out both those that chose to not vote in the primary, because they can’t stand him, and those that are in the category of, “These people don’t vote anyway, so why poll them?” However, we have had a major surge of “unlikely voters” actually voting, and not for Trump, and roughly 30%, so far, of those that normally vote GOP have either left the party entirely, or remain Republican, but have flat out stated that they, “Will not vote for Trump or would rather vote Biden, than risk Trump ending up in office again.” By comparison, we can estimate that, from the last election, we will likely get at least 90% of Dems voting for Biden, even of some don’t like him much, if for no other reason than to keep Trump out of office. By some estimates, this means that for Trump to make up for the 30% of those that would normally vote GOP on the conservative side, he would have to gain close to 75% of the “undecided” votes to even barely win, by a stupidly narrow margin. Add to that the fact that the GOP’s supposed “base” is, bit by bit, becoming more and more fed up with him (despite some 60% of them being idiots), and by the time the election comes around he may have lost 40% or more of his “support”.

Now.. how the F likely do you think it is that in that time he will magically “gain” any significant number of undecided voters, or actually convince Democrats to vote for him? I mean, its possible, I suppose, but it seems bloody unlikely. And, to put it the way one online news person opined, “His numbers might look good, but they are polling the wrong people this time.”

Tangential but on Musk and his “anti-woke” toxicity :

The difference (perhaps the only one) between souffle and an AI chatbot is that I’m yet to taste one that’s considered a threat to democracy or global safety. I’ll spare you yet another list of the world’s anxieties about Large Language Models (LLMs) such as Musk’s Grok, but knowing such a list exists, it’s easy to see why the decision might be considered controversial. Geoffrey Hinton for example, one of three men described as the “godfathers of AI”, has spoken out against open sourcing LLMs in the past, arguing that they’re ripe for exploitation by malicious actors.

..(snip)..To use the parlance of the medium, Grok is considered somewhat “mid” as far as chatbots go.It’s billed as “vulgar” but has been known to say stuff like “buckle up, buttercup”, and once quoted the usage policy of its rival ChatGPT in declining to respond to a prompt. While mocking Elon Musk’s projects is a time-honoured and cherished internet tradition, these arguments might be missing the point.

Let’s say that the last time this politician ran as a non-incumbent, he regularly incited eliminationist violence animated by every sort of bigotry at similar rallies and also in other venues, and let’s say that his presidency was marked by a massive spike in supremacist hate speech, hate crimes, and violent acts of hate against the sort of marginalized groups against whom he had suggested violence should occur. Say that this politician spent his time in office encouraging this sort of violence, by promoting Nazi and white supremacist ideas and ideals, and by pursuing Nazi and white supremacist political goals using Nazi and white supremacist rationales, and say that his crowd had cheered and cheered for these things, and as a result Nazi ideas and ideals and tactics had long ago passed in to common currency—had been normalized in U.S. society, to such a degree that the party that ought to have been his opposition were taking on his view of things, to try to siphon away a bit of his support.

In addition to what #18 vucodlak noted before me :

“Now, if I don’t get elected, it’s gonna be a bloodbath for the whole … that’s gonna be the least of it, it’s gonna be a bloodbath for the country, that’ll be the least of it.” Trump’s campaign has pushed back on claims Trump was talking about violence throughout the country should he lose reelection in 2024, arguing he was talking about the destruction of the auto industry. However, President Biden’s campaign seized on the comments, highlighting how Trump has often praised authoritarian leaders and starts many of his rallies saluting the American flag while “Justice for All” by the “J6 Prison Choir” plays.

    Plus also same event :

At the Saturday rally, Trump also claimed some unauthorized immigrants are “not human” while making unfounded claims that other countries were letting criminals out of prisons to cross into the United States.”I don’t know if you call them people, in some cases, they’re not people in my opinion,” Trump said, referring to prisoners and gang members that he claimed other countries are sending to the United States. Trump then quickly suggested he knew he would be attacked for his comments, saying, “I’m not allowed to say that because the radical left says that’s a terrible thing to say. They say, ‘You have to vote against him because did you hear what he said about humanity’? I’ve seen the humanity and these humanity, these are bad, these are animals.”

  25. raven says

    @ Kagehi 30

What you say sounds good and optimistic.
OTOH, optimism hasn’t worked all that well in the 21st century.

Trump is gaining support among groups that you wouldn’t expect, namely Blacks and Hispanics.
Which means Democrats are losing support among some of their key voting groups.

Trump’s Support Among Latinos Grows, New Poll Shows

A New York Times/Siena College poll found President Biden losing support among Latino voters, who now account for nearly 15 percent of eligible voters, a record high.

    March 2, 2024
President Biden continues to lose crucial support among Latino voters, with an increasing number of those voters saying they are more likely to vote for former President Donald J. Trump, according to a new poll by The New York Times and Siena College.

The poll shows Mr. Trump edging out Mr. Biden among Hispanic voters, with 46 percent supporting the former president and 40 percent favoring Mr. Biden, but because Latino voters make up just 15 percent of the electorate, the poll’s sample size of the group is not large enough to assess small differences reliably. For a subgroup that size, the margin of error is 10 percentage points.

But the poll, and others like it, make clear that Mr. Trump has continued to make remarkable inroads with Hispanic voters.

It isn’t a good idea to dismiss data just because you don’t like it or in this case, it scares you silly.

I’ll do what I can to reelect Biden, who has actually done a sort of reasonable job under adverse conditions without a lot of drama and threats to the USA.

But nothing that can possibly happen is going to surprise me all that much. In a more rational world, Trump wouldn’t even be polling 10%.

  26. Alverant says

Remember a few years ago when conservatives were spreading the lie they were being “censored” on social media and liberal voices were being promoted? Now that it’s clear the opposite is true, they’re suddenly OK with bias.

  27. raven says

I really have no idea why anyone would vote for Trump.
The USA has a lot of problems for sure.
But Trump and the GOP don’t have any solutions.

He could easily have been a hero during the Covid-19 pandemic by doing nothing.
Just let the professional science and medical people handle it.
Instead his leadership was chaotic, all over the place, and mostly just completely absent.
While 1.4 million Americans died from the Covid-19 virus.

It’s a common stereotype that old people always claim times were harder back when they were growing up.
As a Boomer, I’ll claim the opposite.

.1. College paid for with huge student loans that take decades to pay off is way more expensive.
I graduated debt free in the 1970s.
The same university now calculates that a college degree will cost $100,000.

.2. Housing is way too unaffordable.
Since 2017, 7 years, in my area on the coast, they are up 75% and were already expensive to start with. It’s that way everywhere, from Seattle to LA.
Low cost cities on the coast, maybe $500,000. In the SF Bay area, over $1 million.

    .3. Health care.
Costs for everything keep on rising rapidly.

So, yeah, life is getting harder for the average American.
People have a right to be unhappy with the status quo and hope for something better in the future.
But, Trump and the GOP are part of the problem.
They are not part of the solution.

  28. StevoR says

@ ^ raven & #30. Kagehi : The other key thing to note here is the role of third party spoilers like the Nader voters who handed Bush the Lesser the Presidency.

Even if Biden wins in a two person race what happens if third parties – NoLabels, Greens, Glibertarians, RFK ad nauseam do the same this time as some eps of Planet America have suggested. If peopel don’t deliberately pick Biden and iopt for a protest vote instead, well, you may very wellend up with Trump as POTUS again and whether you get another chance to actually vote after that, don’t bet on it.

In Oz I can vote 1 Greens, 2 ALP and put the LNP last on my ballot confident that my Greens vote does NOT help the fascist, Trumpist, regressive LNP. In the US of A tho’- it is simply binary – Biden OR Trump and a non-Biden vote of any kind – or staying home and not voting at all – de facto empowers and helps Trump.

The USA needs preferential voting (or maybe Franc e style run-off elections or suchlike) so very extremely badly here. Plus so many other political reforms too..

Sad thing too is how much massive influence US politics has on Aussie and the retsof global politics too.

responses to insulting language on the political right. Behavior based mocking names for example. I’m literally prepared for a parent to be lord hogwash devotee of not-hitler until they actually respond to my actual claims and avoid mockery of their own.

If someone wants to hold me responsible for a piece of common bad behavior in a political ally they have to literally go and get all of the Rs and Trump to stop before I’ll respect such a distraction from whatever I’m addressing. Rational abandonment of civility.

People keep saying this. But if it’s true, it would also mean that a non-Trump vote of any kind – or staying at home and not voting at all – de facto empowers and helps Biden.

Which would mean not voting for Trump or Biden helps both Trump and Biden. Staying home and not voting for Trump helps Trump. Staying home and not voting for Biden helps Biden. This is clearly untrue, so the original claim must be untrue as well.

  32. John Morales says

    Roy, your reasoning is flawed.

“In the US of A tho’- it is simply binary – Biden OR Trump and a non-Biden vote of any kind – or staying home and not voting at all – de facto empowers and helps Trump.”

No. A non-Biden vote can never ever help Biden, but it can indeed help Trump.

Which would mean not voting for Trump or Biden helps both Trump and Biden. Staying home and not voting for Trump helps Trump. Staying home and not voting for Biden helps Biden. This is clearly untrue, so the original claim must be untrue as well.

    4 states for two variables.

Not voting at all helps neither, not both.

You gotta remember the loony Trump rump of MAGA voters; they will for sure vote.

But the sentiment applies to those who are vacillating about even voting at all (that’s the USA system, quite optional, so motivating people to vote can swing elections). True Trump supporters will vote for Trump, true Biden supporters are fucking rare as; what you have is the rump of people who definitely see the problem with Trump.

This is clearly untrue, so the original claim must be untrue as well.

You garbled the claim you claim is the claim you are subjecting to analysis.

  33. Kagehi says

@31 Yeah, not sure we have “quite” the same situation though. That being said, there is also the attempts, like the one in Arizona, to have the Rethuglican legislature grant itself power to retcon any election they didn’t like, and just declare someone else the winner, based on their already past lies about election fraud (and then probably, when it turned out again to be lies, just go, “Oh. Whoops! Too late anyway, Trump is already in office!” The attempt failed. It might not, if even more sycophants and fascists where put into courts. There is a clear air of desperation and/or just pure fascism in these attempts to not just rig the elections, but turn them into rubber stamp fake democracy, i.e., Russia like totalitarianism, and its being driven by the realization that, despite incomprehensible gains, also through lies of course, among Blacks and Hispanics, as someone else mentioned (but hopefully no where near enough), when younger people vote it is almost universally against the current MAGA GOP (whom, like Trump, they almost all universally despise). The only thing that makes it not universal among Gen Z is that some of them have actually been successfully brainwashed into right wing thinking and hate. Which, of course, is why they are trying to cram very narrow versions of Christian theology, likely hand picked evangelical (but only the right sort of evangelical) priests as councilors, and even more “edited” versions of history, that paint Christian Nationalism as the right way to think into schools every place. Its all about the same thing – they are losing, and have been, more and more rapidly, probably since the 60s, and not one single one of them can seem to comprehend that their adherence to bigotry, in a less and less “white” nation, and worship of Mammon, instead of their pretense at following Jesus, is driving people people away from their vision of how America is supposed to work.

Of course, the most insane things about this is how short sighted they are, in that they actually think that because Trump was willing to pander to their own madness for 4 years, he won’t turn on them like a snake, the second he doesn’t need them any more. They know damn well that, other than wanting to be the richest asshole on the planet, and have everyone bow and scrape to him because of it, he doesn’t actually give a F about anything they do, but he still has the “followers” they need, and many of them refuse to see what Trump really is, so they delude themselves into thinking that they can play snake charmer, and he can’t/won’t manage to turn the whole mob against them, the moment they misstep and do something that inconveniences “him”. Its been far too long, I think, since the “church” has had to deal with a king, and they don’t seem to comprehend that back then, they where the “king makers”, and had some control over them – they don’t control this lunatic, and that is not a position some moron that thinks they are the king maker wants to be in.
