Would you want this guy to influence your children?

I’m curious to know which of the two individuals below you might think would be a more traumatic sight for children visiting a library story hour.

The drag queen?

The Proud Boy?

If you need a little more information to come to conclusion, what the fuck is wrong with you? Here’s the context, though.

A group of men displaying Proud Boy colors stormed a Drag Queen Story Hour at the San Lorenzo Library on Saturday afternoon shouting homophobic and transphobic threats after anti-LGBTQ online activist Chaya Raichik – who runs the anti-LGBTQ LibsofTikTok account – posted information about the event online.

The Alameda County Sheriff’s Office said that police responded to a report of a disturbance at the library at around 1:30 p.m. and discovered five men “described as members of the Proud Boys organization,” “extremely aggressive with a threatening violent demeanor causing people to fear for their safety.”

Right. So in order to “protect” the children, they charged into a children’s story hour to disrupt what should have been a quiet, friendly event with threats and abuse.

Libs of TikTok, which encourages this kind of hate, still has a Twitter account…and is also on Facebook, Parler, Truth Social, Rumble, Gab, GETTR, Instagram, and YouTube. All the social media sites participate in encouraging this kind of frenzy of conflict.

  1. Akira MacKenzie says

Not that I recommend you listen to Alex Jones (I always recommend getting info about him via the Knowledge Fight podcast), but he has made Drag Queen Story Hour his cause célèbre complete with sick accusations for Queens raping children in front of their approving parents and “cutting off little boys’ penises.”

It’s easy to see why the thugs are so upset they raid a library. Score another victory for free speech.

  2. says

His shirt says “kill your local pedophile.”
Total vigilante bullshit. They like to think of themselves as “defenders of freedom,” but their actions totally short-circuit concepts like due process that are integral to any kind of functional democratic society. Self-important, self-appointed fascist bully-boys drunk on their own stupidity, unable to deal with the complete ordinariness of their ridiculous little lives, more comfortable with violence than with sex and looking for any excuse to hurt somebody.
I’ll take the drag queen over the drama queen any day. Yeah, I know it’s a gendered insult, sorry, but I suspect guys like that would be especially insulted by it, since when you take away their toxic ideas of “manhood” they have nothing. No there there.
Quit being “boys” and grow the fuck up.

  3. kome says

Chaya Raichik is also posting tweets explicitly threatening Twitter employees, and yet Twitter still won’t do anything to close down her account. Because social media has been taken over by the right-wing. Not just the user base, but those who head up the companies. This kind of stuff is what drives up engagement, which drives up ad revenue, so who cares about the social consequences of enabling targeted harassment. There’s money to be made from making us all suffer.

  4. brightmoon says

I had a male neighbor who dressed in women’s clothes. All of the 4women in our building used to say he looked better than all of us ! I’m just sorry that I didn’t ask him how to use makeup . Repressive old fashioned father so I never learned

  5. brightmoon says

Yeah I’d prefer drag queens over ignorant violent fascists around my kids any day!

  6. JoeBuddha says

Friend of mine had a buddy who would paint his nails and cross dress. Wasn’t trans or anything, he just liked womens clothes. A bit of a redneck AFAIR.

  7. wzrd1 says

Well, look how dangerous drag queens are, why the last time they stormed a place and shot it up was never the third!
It’s only a matter of time for the INCELs of the Proud Boys.
Thankfully, books are fairly bullet resistant. Yeah, we tested that as well. :/

@5, fiscal conservatism as its best! Nothing like micromanaging child rearing by a Big Brother state.
Why, it’s as American as the INCEL Proud Boys desire to engage in summary executions, gas chambers and concentration camps.
Oh yeah, we did have concentration camps, which got a rapid repainting of signs after Hitler’s camps were uncovered…

@Marcus Ranum, I do advocate children being familiarized with firearms – after extensive safety training and only if their grades merit such time off from more valuable studies. Counting such story hours as education.

@drew, the only thing I advocate storming is the salad bar. Yeah, as soon as I order, I charge that puppy hard!
My salads tend to be about as large as my main meal, so I’m rather biased toward some power grazing there…

  8. birgerjohansson says

Conservative activism accomplishing nothing (Britain, this time): “Brexit won’t stop UK market following EU”
It is as if conservative politics = performative politics, as long as the performance breaks things.

  9. blf says

drew@11 JAQs off with If they’d stormed into a Catholic church would you feel differently?

Depends whether they were yelling in Klingon or Gallifreyan.

  10. Tethys says

The only thing remotely scary about the drag queen is the bizarre eye make-up. Poor thing must wash that off eventually, and it’s rather unpleasant to remove heavy makeup.

I don’t want Mr. Baseball Cap and his t-shirt anywhere near story time, or a church, or children.

I could make an exception if Ballcap wants to go threaten and bluster at that Houston stadium turned mega monstrous church. It seems fair to sic the various factions of regressive white folk on each other.

  11. wzrd1 says

@blf, I dunno. That bloke yelling in Gallifreyan scared the bejesus out of all when he was running about yelling “No More!”. He really had his Moment…

@Tethys, I dunno, he’d also be welcome to charge at bowling pins to his heart’s content. Especially when ball is in play.

Ungh, think I’m passing another gallstone. No gallbladder, so at least they’re smaller… :/

  12. dstatton says

Proud boys have bragged about disrupting school board meetings posing as “concerned parents”.

  13. says

    Re Tethys
“I could make an exception if Ballcap wants to go threaten and bluster at that Houston stadium turned mega monstrous church.”
He’d probably find more pedophiles to shoot there.

  14. Peter Bollwerk says

once again proving that the SF/Oakland Bay Area of California isn’t nearly as liberal as some believe.

  15. anxionnat says

Depends on where you are in the SF Bay Area. We are not all the same. San Lorenzo is small, reportedly conservative, and almost all white, south-east of Oakland. We are just as easy to con if a lot of money is spent, and lots of lies are told, as anybody else (see recall of DA Chesa Boudin in SF last Tues. Sigh. ) My understanding is that these guys were not even from the Bay Area.

  16. wzrd1 says

@dstatton, yeah, but nobody believed them. It’s instantly apparent that not only would no woman alive be with them, but when they attempted to donate sperm, the sample container ran off away from them.

  17. Louis says

In Ye Olde Most United of Kingdoms we have a long tradition of Pantomime Dames and traditional music hall/end of pier/variety performance style arts where men cross dress as women (and women as men). The actors involved are/were pulled from all parts of the sexuality and gender spectra (obviously this was “Not Mentioned” because of homophobia etc, but I digress).

Because we have now successfully imported the style of the American culture war (we of course had our own culture war, we just did it with tea and biscuits) to add to our own, and because we seem to really love a bit of transphobia, the manufactured outrage and panic over drag queens teaching things to kids has become very popular. Lots of my more fruity and exciting relatives who are {ahem} “reactionary ideology enthusiasts” are colossally energised about the horrific threat that a drag queen reading a book to group of children. Won’t someone think of the children? Please!?

Anyway, in my eternal love of irony, when one of said relatives fulminated on the subject, I asked if they would like to bring their children to accompany me and my family to Aladdin this Christmas. They agreed instantly.

  18. birgerjohansson says

In Sweden, Aladdin and Paradis are two 500g boxes of chocholate – one with darker chocholate than the other- typically given away at birthdays and at christmas (no pieces with larch vomit are currently permitted).
Clearly this chocholate brand is yet another facet in the plan to groom children, both the aryan kind and the dark ones.

  19. birgerjohansson says

The proud guys with “kill your local (insert word)” must be terrible shots, as they need a military rifle for a job the local brothers could do with a 9mm or 0.45 handgun. They are really not the pride of the race.

  20. Louis says

    @birgerjohansson #28

I am, of course, outraged and shocked by this Woke Propaganda.

    @birgerjohansson #30

I am, of course, even more outraged and shocked by this Woke Propaganda.

I have called the police. As is right and proper. I shall be waiting on the pavement for them to pick me up and take me away as usual.

  21. birgerjohansson says

Have they reunited? Is this because Sting is pissed he is not in the new Dune?

  22. llyris says

Wow. I know which one I’d prefer to have to explain to my kids. Any child who has ever worn an Elsa dress or played any dress-up can understand the drag queen. (Sidenote – there aren’t enough fabulous costumes for boys)

  23. wajim says

Hate to remind. myself, really, but several decades ago I shot better people that that fuck. Way better

  24. StevoR says

So the Transphobic BGigotry boys T-shirt reads “Kill your local pedophile.” Okay, so many issues here with the singular form of that & apparent assumption that each local area just has the one clearly known one.

They are literally appointing themselves judge, jury and executioner which is vigilanteeism obvs and also starting with them assuming their role is to ..kill people NOT, y’know, report them to the cops with evidence and make sure any real pedophile is convicted for their crimes and jailed. Just like, say, seditionists and traitords s and violent thugs get jailed for their crimes.

I wonder how this reichwing extremist piece of shit feels abuot Milo Yiannopoulos and his pedophila excusing comments or for that matter Trump with his long list of sexual assualts of young women and baosts of being able to get away with it (https://www.businessinsider.com/women-accused-trump-sexual-misconduct-list-2017-12 ) plus Trump’s association with Epstein and wishing convicted pedo Ghislaine Maxwell well.. Wonder how this Christian Supremicist feels about the well known rapes and cover ups of the various Churches most famously but very much NOT excusively the Catholic one. Wonder how he feels about Josh Duggar ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Josh_Duggar#Molestation_charges ) or Dennis Hastert, Matt Gaetz, Roy Moore, et cetera, ad nauseam..

Actually I don’t wonder at all. I am disgusted. Theyare such damn vile hypocrites

Give me the Drag Queen telling stories anyday.

  25. StevoR says

Plus of course, stating the obvs but still :

Proud Boys happily chumming around and supporting their pedophile orpedophile adjacent at best mates.

It’d be good if they were at least challenged a bit more on this by the press, sigh.

  26. F.O. says

I saw one of those shirts for the first time here in Sweden and my instinct was to keep a safe distance from someone who lusts for subhumans to kill with impunity.

Is the shirt a Proud Boys thing?

  27. Pierce R. Butler says

    F.O. @ # 38: Is the shirt a Proud Boys thing?

SFAICT, it’s an across-the-board USA neofascist thing: the hard right has coalesced around transphobia and freely hurled accusations of pedophilia for their daily Two1,440 Minutes of Hate this season.

As for the PBs, … their uniform of choice is an understated black polo with yellow stripes, made by the British label Fred Perry. Not all rock this style with the sophistication of the paragon whose photo graces the lower illustration shown above.

  28. JoeBuddha says

He’d better watch his back. Somebody might take him up on it. Protest much?

  29. StevoR says

@ #35. To clarify – coz tired and can’t type and think I’ve typed what I meant to type when I haven’t & rather important fro meaning expansion :

So the Transphobic Bigotry Boy’s T-shirt reads “Kill your local pedophile.” Okay, so many issues here with the singular form of that & apparent assumption that each local area just has the one clearly known one being about the least of them.

Just like, say, seditionists and traitors and violent racist thugs get jailed for their crimes. At least in theory anyhow..

  30. wzrd1 says

@birgerjohansson, military rifles? They’re really running around with firearms made by the lowest bidder?
I did warn my junior enlisted to remember that their weapon and ammunition were both made by the lowest bidder… ;)

  31. birgerjohansson says

If they just drop a nuke on a city they are bound to kill one or two pedophiles, statistically.

  32. Silentbob says

    (off topic)

So glad PZ released StevoR from the dungeon after he recommended the torture of Muslims years ago.
Pharyngula is much improved by having 4 or 5 comments of drunken rambling in every single thread.

  33. StevoR says

    @ ^ Silentbob : Ouch.

It saddens me that you think that and don’t enjoy my comments here.

You are correct, to my permanent shame & regret I was banned from here for that many years ago.

I think I have become a better human being since in large part thanks to this blog and its commenters among other things I certainly try to be. I am so glad to be allowed to comment here again and value that privilege. I’ll admit I can be verbose and probly ramble a bit. I do have a conversational style and aproach here. I suck at typing and often have to clarify what I’ve written because of that and I like to respond to different comments when I think of different points or wish to amplify or deconstruct others comments.I don’t think I’m particularly unusual in that? Albeit my typing is worse than most here and I’ll try to work on that.

OTOH, I don’t drink anywhere near as much as I used to and I don’t post on every single thread -amny threads yes but not all. I do often post quickly when pushed for time and late at night / early morning when I’m really tired which doesn’t help me here.

  34. polly macdavid says

Are those two guys the only choices? I mean, isn’t there anyone else who can read to the kids?

  35. StevoR says

@ ^ polly macdavid : Of course – and yeah, kids should meet a wide diversityof people from all sorts of different backgrounds (safely) in my view. But I think you are missing the point here.

Do you think there is anything wrong with Drag Queens or with them reading stories to kids?
