Very presidential

Ladies and gentlemen, the pick of the evangelical Christian right.

Charles Blow is a bit upset.

Do you think this will change Trump’s supporters’ minds at all? Now you can find out! Breitbart has rather tersely reported the bare facts of this story. Just read the comments.

Lots of “Bill Clinton is worse!” comments.

TRUMP = boys talk. Clinton actually did attacked and raped woman against their will and used his position to do so.

If only it would sink in that Bill Clinton isn’t in the running.

Then there’s the “All men do it” excuse.

If You’re upset about this, you have never been in a mens locker room. Sorry, but men (if they’re straight) talk about women as women talk about men.

Sorry, nope, I don’t, nor do any of my friends.

There are people who are very happy about what Trump said. It makes him a manly man.

BFD! 2005 LMAO, Yawn! At least he’s not a fag!

TRUMP is a true red blooded American, he has AMERICAN CHILDREN not imports or one that is soley a CLINTON political set up

And then there’s simple denial.

Women love Trump and Trump loves women. Nobody cares.

  1. whywhywhy says

The evangelicals will still vote for him easily. He is the only candidate who is anti-abortion. Since that is an anti-woman stance, it is perfectly in line with the comments in the video. There is no conflict brought up by this video for most evangelicals.

  2. tulse says

He is the only candidate who is anti-abortion

I very much doubt that Trump is personally anti-abortion, as I don’t think he really cares one way or the other. But he is more likely to appoint conservative SC justices, and that’s what matters to the evangelicals, apparently.

  3. cartomancer says

It might not be terribly Presidential, but it’s certainly Prime Ministerial.

For a given value of Prime Ministerial.

    That value being “Silvio Berlusconi”…

  4. specialffrog says

I wonder how evangelicals and other Republicans who have endorsed him can honestly think he can be relied upon to hold up any agreement they think they have with him.

  5. Nerd of Redhead, Dances OM Trolls says

    Has he ever?

Yep, he follows the Koch brothers orders, like any other über conservative.

  6. Rich Woods says

Sorry, but men (if they’re straight) talk about women as women talk about men.

And if it’s not just talk, but actions? I imagine the author of this little gem thinks he would be only to happy to have women walk up to him each day and grab his balls, especially if they were famous. Somehow, though, I think he’s imagining that all those women would look like Miss Universe and not, um, Donald Trump.

  7. robro says

    Just read the [Breitbart] comments.

Heavens no! I value my composure too much for that.

Also, there’s another test coming up tomorrow: a rally with Paul Ryan. Will Ryan show some principles?
    Probably not.

I laughed when I read this. Paul Ryan have principles? LOL.

And now a word from the Idiot Fringe.

Donald Trump’s first and third wives are from…Czechoslovakia and Slovenia. This guy doesn’t know that these aren’t places in America. Much less that these women are Slavs not real Europeans.

Which means his 4 kids are…half American and half Eastern European.

  10. vucodlak says

    From the OP:
“If you’re upset about this, you have never been in a mens locker room. Sorry, but men (if they’re straight) talk about women as women talk about men.”

Yeah, no. I mean, it’s true that I’m not straight, but I am attracted to women, and I’ve never talked about a woman like this. Even as a hornier-than-average-conservative-through-apathy-asshole teenager I found it distasteful to talk about other people like this.

I can’t remember any of my actual friends doing this either. It’s just never been acceptable in any social circle I’ve ever voluntarily been a part, perhaps because women have always been a part of them.

Supposedly, we are now waiting to see a video message from Donald Trump, speaking “directly to the voters” about his lewd and sexual-assault-approving comments.

What John McCain says about Trump’s comments:

There are no excuses for Donald Trump’s offensive and demeaning comments. No woman should ever be victimized by this kind of inappropriate behavior. He alone bears the burden of his conduct and alone should suffer the consequences.

Mitch McConnell says that the tape of Trump talking about women is “repugnant and unacceptable.”

These comments are repugnant, and unacceptable in any circumstance,” McConnell said. “As the father of three daughters, I strongly believe that Trump needs to apologize directly to women and girls everywhere, and take full responsibility for the utter lack of respect for women shown in his comments on that tape.

But, no, McConnell still has not rescinded his endorsement of Trump.

Paul Ryan was scheduled to appear at an event in Wisconsin tomorrow with Donald Trump. Now it appears that Ryan has basically disinvited Trump.

I am sickened by what I heard today. Women are to be championed and revered, not objectified,” Ryan said. “I hope Mr. Trump treats this situation with the seriousness it deserves and works to demonstrate to the country that he has greater respect for women than this clip suggests. In the meantime, he is no longer attending tomorrow’s event in Wisconsin.

But, no, Ryan did not take back his endorsement of Trump.

Nice of McMorris to be explicit about what’s wrong with what Trump said instead of offering vague condemnation. Or worse:

Women are to be championed and revered, not objectified,” Ryan said.

Putting us on a pedestal is still objectifying us, fuckface.

The last Breitbart comment can’t be descibed as denial, it is no more than a hyperbole. Most of white American women are going to vote for Trump, according to Nate Silver’s 538. You Americans have very strange pale-skinned females, most of them just don’t seem to care whether their president grabs unknown women by their genitals or not.

  15. What a Maroon, living up to the 'nym says

The Republicans are acting like they’re surprised by this. They lay down with this dog, now the itching is getting unbearable.

  16. borealis says

SC, your lack of patience doesn’t change the sad fact that still 55% of white American women are stupid and racist enough to vote for Trump, despite all his disgusting misogynist remarks. I hope you’re not one of them. But they are the majority of the largest demographic group in a powerful and arrogant country — and these women are all over the internet defending Trump right now.

Apparently you own the site, so I shall piss off now, lest you attack me more. If you’re an American, you’ve pretty much proved my point about the arrogance. Do vote for Hillary, anyway.

  17. raven says

Most of white American women are going to vote for Trump, according to Nate Silver’s 538.

    Not true.

    WaPo October 1
Among white women without college degrees, however, Trump leads Clinton 52 percent to 40 percent. The two candidates are virtually tied among white women overall: 46 percent for Clinton and 44 percent for Trump, according to the Post-ABC survey.

A later poll has the female vote difference between Clinton and Trump at 18%

You Americans have very strange pale-skinned females, most of them just don’t seem to care whether their president grabs unknown women by their genitals or not.

It’s not just a subset of white females who will vote for Trump regardless.
It’s also a larger subset of white males.
And a small subset of nonwhites of any gender.

Much less that these women are Slavs not real Europeans.

WTF “real” Europeans? Czech and Slovak republics lie right in the centre of European continent. There is no doubt we are “real” Europeans by any standard, geographical, historical, cultural or otherwise.

I think you mean no harm, but this attitude at both conscious and subconscious level gave us Brexit, destabilised EU and is still demonstrated by prejudices against Slavs across a significant part of EU. Some see Slavs as not “real” Europeans and some go even further and see us as not “real” people either. When you make a comment about some demographics, try to see how they might interpret it.
    _______________

I have not expected that Trump will describe how he can assault women and get away with it because he is rich. I had to stop the video halfway throught becasue I could not stand it. It makes me wonder now if he assaulted his wives whenever he felt like it, or the contestants in the Miss Universe pageant.

I guess I am naive, when even Trump is capable to surprise me with his vileness.

  21. nelliebly says

I am impressed by borealis’ determination to find someway in which women are to blame for Trump’s co.ments about us.

No wait, not ‘impressed’, ‘bored’, yes that’s it. I’m always confusing those two.

  22. DLC says

The crude, disgusting sexism displayed and the attitude toward women that is evidenced by the way he so offhandedly throws out the words should be warning signs enough that the person saying the words is not someone who should be elected to represent all of the people of the United States. The President, whether he is of your party or not, is everyone’s President, and how can you be everyone’s President when you treat half of humanity as if they were playthings ?

  23. raven says

Charly at 40 you are dumb. That was snark or sarcasm. I hate it when I have to explain really, really simple things.

I don’t believe Slavs are untermenschen. And these days most people don’t or I hope anyway..

But anti_Slavic hatred, bigotry, and prejudice was common in the 20th century. The German Nazis thought they were lower than the Jews. And planned to ethnic cleanse and genocide them and take their land and stuff. That was a big part of why WWII happened. Lebensraum.
It also existed in the USA in one form or another. There was a lot anti-Slav prejudice.

While most of us have moved on, I can assure you some of the Trump supporters haven’t and would consider Slavs to be questionable at best. Some of Trump’s support is from…Nazis and neoNazis.

  24. raven says

I’m guessing some people don’t know recent history. It was pretty dismal. Anti-Slav prejudice was a real thing.

    1. The Holocaust was just a warmup act. The Nazis really wanted the Slavs gone.

    Anti-Slav sentiment wikipedia
Anti-Slavic racism was an essential component of Nazism.[10] Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party movement regarded Slavic countries (especially Poland, Serbia and Russia) and their peoples as non-Aryan Untermenschen (subhumans), they were deemed as foreign nations that could not be considered part of the Aryan master race.[1] There were exceptions for some minorities in these states deemed by the Nazis to be descendants of ethnic German settlers and not Slavs who were willing to be Germanised.[10] Hitler considered the Slavs to be inferior, as the Bolshevik Revolution had put the Jews in power over the mass of Slavs, who were, by his own definition, incapable of ruling themselves but instead being ruled by Jewish masters.[11] Because according to the Nazis, the German people needed more territory to sustain its surplus population, an ideology of conquest and depopulation was formulated for Eastern Europe according to the principle of Lebensraum, itself based on an older theme in German nationalism which maintained that Germany had a “natural yearning” to expand its borders eastward (Drang Nach Osten).[10] The drive was focused especially towards the Soviet Union, as it alone was deemed capable of providing enough territory to accomplish this goal,[12] but they reached a much more advanced state in Occupied Poland because of its immediate proximity to Germany. According to the resulting genocidal Generalplan Ost, millions of German and other “Germanic” settlers would be moved into the conquered territories, and the original Slavic inhabitants were to be annihilated, removed or enslaved.[10]

    2. There was a lot of anti-Slavic prejudice in the USA during the 20th century. Mostly directed at Polish and Hungarians. And also prejudice against Irish and Italians.

    3. It’s still around both in Europe and the USA. How much I don’t know.

My impression is that in the USA, the targets have shifted to Hispanics and nonwhites, and these days Slavs, Irish, and Italians are considered white enough to join the KKK and Nazis.
Or marry Donald Trump if they are cute and young enough.

  25. says

Well, raven, thank you for explaining basic history to me, as if I did not already know it. As well as explaining that anti-slavic bigotry does not exist anymore and is a thing of the past because you do not see it. I guess my friends imagined it when they were called “filthy slavic swines” by their French catering manager in Sun Valley mere 15 years ago.

Actually, no thank you, fuck you, you condescending asshole, fuck you and the high horse you rode in on.

I hate, when someone writes something idiotic, is called on it and instead of apologizing subsequently tries to save face by claiming it was snark or sarcasm and accuses people of stupidity for the crime of taking written word as it is, actually, written. A hint – without facial expressions, tone of voice and/or long friendship that implies deep mutual knowledge a written sarcasm is not as clearly recognisable as you think it is. If you want your sarcasm/snark to be recognized by someone who is miles away and has no way to read your mind, you should take greater care in formulating what you say.

For example you could write “Much less that these women are Slavs, who to the likes of them are not real Europeans.”. Or you could put “real Europeans” in scare quotes. There is a number of ways you could phrase your post. You phrased it as you did, do not blame others for your poor communication skills.

    Phuy.

    Transcript of Trump’s apology:

I’ve never said I’m a perfect person nor pretended to be someone that I’m not. I’ve said and done things I regret and the words released today on this more than a decade old video are one of them. Anyone who knows me knows these words don’t reflect who I am. I said it, I was wrong and I apologize.

I’ve traveled the country talking about change for America but my travels have also changed me. I’ve spent time with grieving mothers who have spent lost their children, laid off workers whose jobs have gone to other countries and people from all walks of life who just want a better future. I have gotten to know the great people of our country and I’ve been humbled by the faith they’ve placed in me. I pledge to be a better man tomorrow and will never ever let you down.

Let’s be honest. We’re living in the real world. This is nothing more than a distraction from the important issues we’re facing today. We are losing our jobs, we’re less safe than we were eight years ago and Washington is totally broken.

Hillary Clinton and her kind have run our country into the ground. I’ve said some foolish things but there’s a big difference between the words and actions of other people. Bill Clinton has actually abused women and Hillary has bullied, attacked, shamed and intimidated his victims. We will discuss this more in the coming days. See you at the debate on Sunday.

    OK Charly you win.

There is no way I can explain things simple enough for you to understand. I know this because I tried.

While you may know recent history, a lot of Americans don’t. Our educational system has been going downhill for decades. And this is a blog in the USA with a mostly American readership.

  28. Beatrice, an amateur cynic looking for a happy thought says

Er, if Americans are so uneducated how were they supposed to know that “not real Europeans” was sarcasm?

Er, if Americans are so uneducated how were they supposed to know that “not real Europeans” was sarcasm?

That was an assumption I made.

It turned out to be wrong.

That some people don’t know recent history is an empirically derived conclusion. I’m sometimes surprised at what people don’t know.

I am not a woman. But I know a lot about anti-Slav prejudice, because I am Slav (specifically Czech) myself and I encountered some of it first hand and more of it second hand. That is why I used “we” when I was talking about Czech and Slovak republic and Slavs in general.
