Jon Stewart looks at the Freedom Summit, the Iowa event that brought together Republican presidential hopefuls.

They are absurd and inane and totally awful, and Stewart rightly mocks them. Yet all I can see is that some of them have been presidential candidates, and plan to run again, and that there are a swarm of Americans who will vote for them, and that one of them could get elected.

Better laugh now, ’cause you might be crying later.

What… the fuck is Huckabee’s analogy about?

Making sausage is to killing pigs as making laws is to ____________ ?

  2. congenital cynic says

Wow! That Palin spot is amazing. I have no fucking idea what she was even trying to say. That was, to quote a colleague of mine, “a word salad”. Nobody with an ounce of intelligence could vote for her. And the rest of the field are clowns as well. Americans, I feel for ya.

  3. twas brillig (stevem) says

I watched that “live” last night (during the NYC snowpocalypse) and laughed at how Stewart highlighted Palin’s incomprehensibility (“verbs running away from the nouns” [paraphrasing])
To think she was once nominated for VP is inconceivable.
Huckabee just kept running with that “metaphor”, that making law is a disgusting process. Till, like Stewart, one could get totally lost that it was a metaphor, that he actually was talking about making sausages. Some of that was a deliberate lack of information from Daily Show. Treatment of pigs was a big issue at the Iowa “convention”. Christie exploited it, at the expense of his own constituents; that’s why Hucky was talking about it in the 1st place.

    Saad @ 1,
    “killing the Constimatution”
    “killing the baby jeebus”
    “killing MAH RITES”

    Saad @1

What… the fuck is Huckabee’s analogy about?

It started with a quote from Otto von Bismarck: “Laws are like sausages, it is better not seeing them made.” Huckabee then ran the metaphor into the ground.

  6. a_ray_in_dilbert_space says

I believe that Huckabee was trying to simultaneously channel Joni Ernst and von Bismark. The turbulence resulting from the IQ gradient between the two resulted in catastrophic metaphorical destruction of the point he was trying to make. There were no survivors.

  7. brett says

I really miss not having the “Colbert Report” anymore. He would have some seriously awesome fun with this.

  8. unclefrogy says

terrifying is what I felt when Hucky’s speech started to go dark when he said they would have to do some pig killin’
That they could say the same thing they have been sayin for years and call it something else at the same time adds to the horror. They “look nice” but seem so dangerous.
    Keep ’em talking!

congenital cynic@2: I read a transcript (on Ed’s blog, I think) and even being able to try to piece together the words slowly….nope…no sense whatsoever.

Then I had to lay down (and alcohol was required). ;-)

  10. actias says

Many, many years ago I, too, saw sausage being made; I stopped eating meat. I suppose a good Christian like Mike Huckabee sees animals simply as natural resources put here by the creator for our pleasure and amusement. His son is rumored to have killed a stray dog by hanging it and allowing it to slowly suffocate. Empathy is a foreign concept to these frothing sociopaths.

  11. zenlike says

As an European, I’m not laughing, I’m scared shitless. Here we have a person who can’t string a couple of words together in a coherent sentence, and she was almost elected to the position of VP of the most powerful country of the world.

Laugh it up, because one of these yahoos will be the republican nominee, and will have a real chance at winning because many people will vote for them simply because the person has a little R besides their name.

  12. howardhershey says

And here I thought conservatives were against killing pigs? What’s that? Oh, he was talking about literal pigs, not the police.

  13. malta says

I remember when someone tried to diagram Palin’s sentences and it was amazing.

Our president must have missed growing up. Because his insistence that his lawlessness, of he trying to get his way, it tramples our Constitution. So, from debt. And I won’t even get into the details of everything.

I think what she’s saying is something like this: President Obama insists on getting his way because he never grew up. This lawlessness leads him to trample the Constitution. And the “details” explain how we go from Constitution-trampling to debt. (Hint: step four is profit!)
