You know… I was worried about John Oliver (temporarily) taking over. I don’t really know why, and after his first string of shows, I’m even less sure why. He’s brilliant. A perfect sub.
Though… is anyone else wondering if this is an audition? Maybe we’ll eventually start seeing The Daily Show with John Oliver?
As much as I’d miss Stewart, I’d be okay with that…l even happy, since Oliver seems more willing to take the atheist side of a religious debate than Stewart is…
And that write-up of the episode by Matt Slick? What is wrong with this guy? First of all, his example of “there are gays who go out and kill straights just like there is anti-gay violence” is this:
I cited the Jesse Kirkhising case as an example where two homosexual men tied up, drugged, and raped a 14 year old boy who died, and how the media hardly mentioned it at all. If it had been the other way around, the media would have maximized the publicity for its pro-homosexual leanings.
WTF? Where in that does it show that these two gay men did this explicitly because they hated straight people, or that particular straight person (supposing the 14 year old was straight)? This is the equivalent of me saying that we have a major problem with Christians murdering non-Christians because the BTK killer was a Christian and even a respected elder in his church. Does he even comprehend the difference between “person A killed person B because he hates B people” vs. “person A killed [anyone including a B person] for whatever reason”? Does he seriously think that is the equivalent of, say, Matthew Sheppard or any number of other gay people who were slaughtered BECAUSE they were gay? Would he say that if a black man accidentally hit a white man with a car, that is the equivalent of a reverse-lynching? Seriously?
So I guess if a straight man is a murderer and/or child rapist, that man is a murder and/or child rapist. If a GAY man is a murderer and/or child rapist then ALL gay men are murderers and child rapist. If a Christian commits a violent assault you can’t blame Christianity (even if the assailant explicitly cites biblical teachings to justify his assault), but if a GAY person commits a violent assault under any circumstances and for any reason, it is clearly a GAY anti-straight hate crime.
So I guess what he wants is for the media to zero in on that one case and create a causal relationship of some sort between the perpetrators’ gayness and their crime, in fact, to create a hate-crime causal relationship on a par with the reams of Christian anti-gay violence we’ve seen. Entirely because the two guys were gay and for no other reason. I’m sure that if anyone points out the clear relationship between a bible that says “kill the gays” and a fundie Christian who goes out and kills gays after a long period of being outspoken about how “god wants us to kill the gays” and is arrested blithering about how he just did “god’s work” and shouldn’t be arrested for it, Slick would be claiming “persecution”. No, he thinks someone simply calling him a bigot or disapproving of his bigoted views is already “persecution”, so this would probably be much much worse to him.
What really sickens me is that these are the very sorts of people promoting ,underwriting, and funding jail-the-gays, kill-the-gays, and outlaw-any-pro-gay-speech-and-organizations laws in Africa and South America, while whining pitifully that they, with all their omnipresence and power and whole corporations and media outlets dedicated to promoting and propagating their “faith”, are being “persecuted” because they can’t spew their hate with impunity anymore and people actually feel free to express their disapproval. Where are the government agents trying to silence you, Slick? Where are the gay groups trying to have you imprisoned for your views? Oh, wait, he’s convinced that someday soon believers like himself will be forced to wear “marks”. Yeah, I see what you did there. Holocaust imagery. Fucking classy, asshole–way to piss on the graves of people who were ACTUALLY persecuted, while projecting your own wet-dreams of pro-Christian persecution on your intended victims–some of whom are still being victimized now. It’s a twofer.
Then he complains that:
Since the Daily Show aired, I’ve been called a moron, a bigot, homophobe, closet case, out of touch Christian, and some other things I can’t repeat here. There are now discussion threads about what I said, and from what I’ve seen of them, nothing is favorable. The Huffington Post has an article on the front page saying “‘Daily Show’ skewers evangelical’s claim that gays bully Christians.” Of course the coverage is negative as are all the comments that I’ve read. In all, there’s a great deal of bullying occurring along with mockery, condemnation and insults… Just as I said was the case! They are proving my point that the media is biased.
Okay, at the beginning he says “He assured me that their intent was not to mock, but to represent the Christian view accurately. I believed him.”. Really? A comedy show, with a particular political bent, assured you that there was to be no mockery? And you believed them? Because that seems really stupid.
And to say that “the media is biased” because a freaking comedy fake-news show with a liberal/atheist bent to it made fun of you is….I don’t even think I have the word for it right now. Of course, this is from a guy from the kind of groups that think Fox “News” is a legitimate news source and not a fake-news propaganda mill (big difference between liberals and conservatives: we practice truth in labeling and clearly mark fake-news comedy for what it is), so I don’t know why I’m surprised.

Opposing bullying is bullying the bully. Making fun of a bully denying bullying and pretending to be the only one who is being bullied is also bullying. Sounds vaguely familiar…
