  1. Nick Gotts says

But… but… he was just about to prove the existence of God! I’m sure he was!

  2. Barklikeadog says

WHAT??? He was too fun. Why???? OOOPS I remember trying to get in on the posse on the Brenda thread.

  3. Sven DiMilo says

    Gaudeamus Igitur!
A well-deserved plonk; thanks for finally relenting. Pharyngula will be a far more pleasant experience for it.
And Kseniya can stop holding her nose.

  4. Barklikeadog says

You’re not going to do anything to Walton though? Are you? At least he’s polite. That is until someone gets to him and heee callllls someone an Asshat or Slut. He is such a nice guy too. (reference Brenda thread here too)

  5. Patricia C. says

But, but… now who will protect Brenda from that slut Alex?
Aww, PZ – I was just on the verge of Kenny showing me god. Dammit, now I’ll never be born again.
OK, I forgive you. The debbel made you do it.

  6. Bride of Shrek says

Aaaawwwww, Kenny was my bitch. I’ll kinda miss the little ratweasel. Be alert though for morphing PZ, he pretty much said he was going to come back in another guise if he was banned.

  7. Thumper600 says

“I know you are but what am I?”
Dang! Second Pee Wee Herman retort in one day. See Unscrewing the Inscrutable.

  8. Britomart says

Oh well, I am sure we will have a new bad example along soon enough.

    Probably several.

  9. says

    Kenny,

You are always welcome on my blog. But I’ve got to warn you. My commenters are not nice and forgiving like the ones here and I’m not a fuzzy teddy bear like PZ is.

  10. Walton says

I have no idea why this ban was necessary. But it is up to Professor Myers.

I only hope that I myself will not suffer the same fate (as Barklikeadog seems to suggest above at #8). Despite some abuse from a small minority of members, I have mostly been able to engage in constructive dialogue with the participants here, and I do feel that I’ve learnt quite a lot from the experience. Which is why I’m here. Ultimately, I’m not trying to convert anyone to anything, or convince the world that my political views are the One Eternal Truth that everyone should agree with; but I’m interested in talking to people whose views are radically opposed to mine, in a setting where people can speak freely. And I hope it’s been a beneficial experience for most people concerned.

  11. says

I fear that you can kill Kenny all you want and he’ll still show up in future episodes threads.

Remember: “If you strike me down, I shall become more powerful than you could possibly imagine!”

Oh, sorry. Wrong nerdy cultural reference.

  12. Ichthyic says

I have mostly been able to engage in constructive dialogue

    says who?

And I hope it’s been a beneficial experience for most people concerned.

well, it’s actually been rather one-sided, since you appear to know so little about the things you expound upon.

I dunno… are you actually learning anything?

You haven’t presented any new information, incisive thought, or even much reasoned logic that I’ve seen, so my conclusion would be that “most” here wouldn’t consider the exchanges “beneficial” from their pov.

I really do hope, that as you get older, you abandon rhetoric for real study.

save the rhetoric for AFTER you graduate, and actually know something about what you wish to discuss.

  13. ChrisC says

Ohhhh… but I was starting to enjoy Kenny’s opinion. And all that evidence for the existence of God that he gathered from near death experience? How could we NOT want to hear that repeated as nauseum, without alteration, over and over again?

  14. Patricia C. says

Aw-oh, I’m in the monkey do-doo now… if I tell Brenda you’re a real hottie will you let me off the hook?

  15. says

Speaking of rulings from the bench, the California State Supreme Court announced that it would not stay its decision in the same-sex marriage case. Gay weddings begin in two weeks and they are not limited to state residents. Same-sex couples from other states (not Massachusetts, obviously) may be coming to the Golden State to get hitched. Nine state attorneys general (all Republicans [big surprise]) petitioned the California court to suspend its decision for fear that they would have to deal with litigation to have the California marriages recognized in their respective states. Crybabies! Didn’t they want to be attorney general? The big sissies should just do their jobs! (I name names.)

  16. Alex says

Oh but I am a hottie. I’d love to show you. Maybe we can make an “arrangement” – then I’ll let you off the hook. (are you a hottie?)

  17. Alex says

OMG – and does that mean you know Brenda? This could be a very interesting arrangement.

  18. Gustav Nyström says

I now this will be done to boredom – or have already? – but I have been waiting to make this joke since the very first Kenny-thread (and let’s face it, Kenny had an uncanny way of turning every thread he commented on into his thread) and I just can’t help it. So, here it goes:

Oh, my God, he killed Kenny! You bastard!

Ok, now it’s out of my system. Please, carry on.

  19. says

Well, that posted OK…(looks again, this time checking for vowels).

Well, that was close. It must be because I’m Ken and not Kenny. I never did like that name.

  20. Frederik Rosenkjær says

I vote for #9 to win the Internets…I feel the same way, incidentally.

  21. Alex says

And why are you so interested in Kenny’s body jeffox? I’m not sure CA passed a law allowing for that kind of “relationship”.

  22. Ichthyic says

On hearing this news of Kenny’s banishment, I thought of this.

    I thought of this:

  23. says

Alex, re your #7, “Poor fella. The strain was just more than we could bear.” One of my favourite quotes from that movie, just watched it again the other night. Well, actually pieces of it, lots of fast forwarding.

Ciao y’all – Oh. Kenny, I apologize; I forgot you were there. You may go now.

  24. Barklikeadog says

No Walton , I don’t want you banned. I didn’t want Kenny banned. He was too much fun IMHO. I just want you to break loose and call someone a nome or something. You’re too nice. And you make sense too.

  25. Alex says

Actually JeffreyD, I think it’s a little different. The actual quote I think is “poor soul, the strain was more than he could bear”. But I didn’t want to refer to kenny as a soul, and it was our strain I care about, not his.

Thanks for noticing though. It makes me feel like less of a geek to myself.

  26. windy says

Aww, PZ – I was just on the verge of Kenny showing me god.

Patricia, you slut! Kenny is mine!

  27. Sven DiMilo says

    Quoth Walton:

I have no idea why this ban was necessary.

Liar. I explained it to you, politely (and several others did too, some not-so), the very first time (to my knowledge) you showed up and started concern-trolling about it. Let’s see if I can find it… ah, here. A list of Kenny’s bannable offenses appeared here.
As for you, Walton, you haven’t done anything bannable to my knowledge, but jeez, man, get over yourself!

  28. Patricia C. says

Oh dear! I take it back Alex. You’re not a slut, you’re a goat in rut…Kenny’s body – yuck!

  29. Barklikeadog says

Ichthyic #43. that was just too good. I’m sore from laughing. Good job.

  30. Leigh says

For God’s sake, somebody tell Alex about saltpeter, or masturbation, or real girls. Or maybe the Craig’s List personals.

Alex, son, this is NOT the Craig’s List personals, in case you haven’t noticed.

  31. JeffreyD says

jeffox, re your question in #36 “Hottie/schmottie, if Kenny’s dead where’s the body? :)” Simple, he is risen and in less than three hours. Look for the Shroud of Turing Test coming to a History Channel near you.

    Ciao y’all

  32. says

PZ, you are truly an Elitist Bastard™

    Bride of Shreck said;

Be alert though for morphing PZ, he pretty much said he was going to come back in another guise if he was banned.

Yeah, but it’ll take him three days…

  33. jeffox says

So, Kenny and FTK are now cellmates. :) Soon, they, along with Larry, DaveS, Jason, & a few others will be able to form their own dungeon football team. Then they can make a movie about it and call it THE LONGEST TARD :) :) :)

  34. Owlmirror says

I note that “Kenny” has a separate “plonk” entry from “Planet Killer”. I still think it should be possible to post examples of each of their typical arguments to show a suspiciously similar style and interests.

Also, I am pretty sure that “Jason/Jinx” and “dsmvlwd” are the same person.

Note the actual signature conflating these two monikers, here:

    http://www.prefixmag.com/news/update-ben-stein-did-not-acquire-the-rights-to-the/18179/

And I think that snide “jsn” (there’s another Jsn who occasionally posts who is not the same commenter) is also a Jinx morph. Note that “jason”, when “dsmvld”, becomes “jsn”.

  35. Barklikeadog says

For those of who missed Kenny and his, um, stuff here are some of his soothing words. Pretty profound. Ohhh I’m going to miss him. Kenny, Kenny. Is there really a heaven?

< <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< Here's the bottom line folks, and I'm really not telling you anything you don't already know down in your heart anyway (God planted it there, so if you're the 1 in 10 who has the courage to actually "be still and know HE is God") Jesus Christ died for your sins. Pretty simply put - if (IF, ok? so listen up), if there was a holy GOD who would not COMPROMISE with evil (or I guess he would also be evil), but he created MAN who through Adam (yep, good ole Adam), sinned, and was not longer HOLY - then God has a problem. He loves man, and he hates SIN and he won't (can't because he's a holy God) compromise. So what does he do? Simple. He SENDS his SON JESUS CHRIST who died for you and me. If we accept JESUS CHRIST, and his 'put on his righteousness', we will be forgiven and one day, go to heaven. Now go ahead, mock away, call me an idiot. It's fine. I was once just like you. The bible says spiritual things are "foolishness" to those of the world. So, really I'm not talking to the 9 out of 10 of you. But the 1. Just the 1 who will read this, and consider it - dare I say it? Pray about it. Jesus said "my sheep know my voice". Are you one of his sheep? I am. Kenny said this on October 18th, 2007 at 19:34 pm >>>>>>>>>>>

  36. Alex says

Patricia, I’m sorry for the hard feelings. But I’m sure I’ve been called worse by better.

Leigh, please try not to stifle inquisitiveness. The information I was about to obtain I would have made available to everyone. But I would ask you to explain the saltpeter. You lost me there.

  37. David Marjanović, OM says

So Kenny wasn’t PlanetKiller? Despite his obsession of NDEs and his denial of Muslim and Hindu ones?

You are always welcome on my blog. But I’ve got to warn you. My commenters are not nice and forgiving like the ones here and I’m not a fuzzy teddy bear like PZ is.

Wow. That’s “good cop, bad cop” as an art form!

I fear that you can kill Kenny all you want and he’ll still show up in future episodes threads.

    Relax. You only live twice.

Oh, sorry. Wrong nerdy cultural reference.

Real nerds don’t watch Star Wars. Star Wars is part of a classical education.

  38. CrypticLife says

I don’t believe that man has ever been to law school!

(obscure reference to Toy Story quote, where it was medical school instead of law school)

  39. Ichthyic says

And I think that snide “jsn” (there’s another Jsn who occasionally posts who is not the same commenter) is also a Jinx morph. Note that “jason”, when “dsmvld”, becomes “jsn”.

sounds too obvious, but you’re probably right.

  40. Patricia C. says

*gasp*! Oh my goodness! That’s right Windy – I forgot about the hot monkey sex…SORRY! Better tighten my corset, I’m starting to slip.

  41. Barklikeadog says

Alex, saltpeter makes yer weenie wangle. It falls over and can’t stand up.

  42. MikeM says

Aw. No more Kenny. Boo hoo.

I have no idea why, but… Well, I see various people are reminded of different things, and I’m reminded of a bumper-sticker I saw just the other day:

“Heck is for people who don’t believe in Gosh.”

I don’t know why it’s even appropriate to mention this here.

  43. David Marjanović, OM says

Thanks for the link, Etha (comment 14):

I have to go to work now. I am sure I will be banned when I come back. Such as [sic!] life. I do want to say that I still want to show off some of the evidence that I am building and I will have to use Morphing in case I am banned to show that evidence.

He is building evidence? He’s making it up and proud of that?

    “Stupidity,
    stupidity,
    stupidity,
    stupidity,
    …”

  44. Alex says

    I think that’s a twist on:

I don’t believe in God, I believe in Gosh. If you don’t believe in Gosh, you’ll be darned to heck.

  45. says

Kenny is gone?! There IS a Shiva!

Kenny would have been so proud of me if he knew I opened my heart and listened, and Shiva spoke, and I heard him.

I must be one of his 1 in 10. I feel so statistically insignificant!

  46. Patricia C. says

er…Alex calling a man a goat isn’t an insult. A goat is well known to be the naughtiest animal on the farm. FAR too naughty for me. :)

  47. Sven DiMilo says

By the way, while on the subject (on some other thread, maybe) of antediluvian pop-culture references, how many know what PZ’s title of this post refers to? Without Googling?

  48. Alex says

Well dammit Patricia why didn’t you just say that then?! Why all of the confusing livestock references?! I didn’t grow up on your farm! I don’t know these things! Anyway, I apologize for lashing out.

So. What was that farm you grew up on?

  49. Nick Gotts says

Are you one of his sheep? I am. – Kenny, quoted by Barklikeadog

This “sheep” motif in Christianity has long puzzled me. Sheep are notoriously stupid and cowardly animals; and the shepherd may protect them from wolves, but only because he wants to fleece them repeatedly, and eventually slaughter and eat them! Yet the Christian-in-the-pew seems quite oblivious to the connotations.

  50. Barklikeadog says

Yeah it was Jimmy on , uh I’ll get it, I can hear the song. Movin’ on up to the east side.. What the gosh heck was the name of that show?

  51. Sastra says

Yes, he was repetitious, but I thought Kenny had the 3 advantages of being sincere, (generally) polite, and capable of laying out some of the more common arguments we hear from ordinary, next-door-neighbor type Christians. Any atheist who hasn’t encountered — and learned to understand and counter — the Argument from Near Death Experiences, for example, is going to get waylaid unexpectedly in real life some day when they don’t have their computer, or informed colleagues, handy. The Kennies of the Internet deserve some credit I think for having the guts to enter hostile forums where they’re seriously outnumbered, and provide us with practice and examples on different ways to approach the same problem, with more or less finesse.

So, in general, I don’t quite get the need for banning in cases like this. Those who wanted to talk to /argue with Kenny did so. Others (like myself) who were tired or uninterested skipped those posts. There are usually several threads running at a time, anyway. It’s not like Kenny was being loud and drowning out conversations.

Of course, people were getting more and more abusive and nasty — Kenny included — so it probably ceased to be useful and just started forming bad habits.

  52. says

“Here come da judge” was a running gag on Rowan and Martin’s Laugh In. Worth watching now just to marvel at the young Goldie Hawn.

  53. says

Thanks Sven, for reminding me there would be people who not only wouldn’t know, they wouldn’t know what Laugh-In was a reference to. Sammy Davis Jr. and Flip Wilson both robed up for that bit. It was fun stuff to watch while waiting for episodes of The Prisoner.

It was forty-one years ago today,
Sgt. Pepper taught the band to play…

  54. Sven DiMilo says

    “repititious”?

  55. afarensis, FCD says

By the way, while on the subject (on some other thread, maybe) of antediluvian pop-culture references, how many know what PZ’s title of this post refers to?

A Flip Wilson character on the old Flip Wilson Show.

  56. MikeM says

It’s a habit I learned from having kids. I mean, seriously, there are some things I don’t want to say around kids. I find myself saying, “Fffffffiddlesticks!” a lot.

Thing is, though, the kids automatic translation devices are starting to mature, and they automatically translate “fiddlesticks” very accurately.

    Makes ’em cry.

  57. Ichthyic says

  58. BoxerShorts says

Woohoo! I haven’t been this excited since I shook Obama’s hand at the Xcel center last night!

Actually… No. Obama’s got you beat, PZ. Sorry.

  59. Sven DiMilo says

Originally a guy named “Pigmeat” Something-or-other, but yeah, later Flip Wilson.
Gol-ly I loved that show. The catch-phrases, Artie Johnson, Goldie Hawn in a bikini…

  60. Alex says

Sastra, you raise some good points. Perhaps warnings? But then again, he did equate PZ with Nazis.

  61. Nick Gotts says

Re #82. Rowan and Martin’s Laugh-In. I thought the humour rather patchy, but I never knowingly missed an episode – I really fancied Judy Carne! (Oh my gosh, I just googled Carne; she’s now 69.)

  62. Sven DiMilo says

    I love the Google too:
“Pigmeat” Markham was the guy’s name. Apparently it was part of his chitlin-circuit comedy act and got ripped off for Laugh-In by Sammy Davis Jr. Markham himself then did the schtick for the second (1968-69) season, and after that Wilson and others.
Yeah, Judy Carne, also in a bikini…

  63. says

Wow, the second I read “Pigmeat,” my brain horked up “Pigmeat_Markham,” spelling and all. The wiki entry explains where Sammy Davis Jr. fit into the lineage. As for Laugh In? They used to have these things called Love Ins, from Sit Ins, or as Peter Bergman called them, Be Ins.

If only I had any brain cycles available for anything other than useless trivial knowledge.

  64. says

It’s not like Kenny was being loud and drowning out conversations.

That wasn’t my experience, Sastra. I seem to recall many threads being derailed by the Ken-bot. The near 20-30 comments he added about the same stuff to nearly every thread (including defenses against his inanity by others) tended to bog things down.

I’m all for disagreement, and I think it’s important that strong and weak theists contribute here. But when we’ve got commenters on every thread of length noting that they don’t have the time to read 200+ comments, do we need people like Kenny who contribute length and nothing else?

He was a good source of dimwit creationism, but the population of individuals that think such arguments and consider them sufficient and compelling is sitting comfortably on the IUCN’s list under ‘Least Concern‘.

We’re in no danger of running out, unfortunately.

  65. hje says

    I come to bury Kenny, not to praise him;
The stupidity that men blog lives after them,
Common sense is oft interred with their bones,
So let it be with Kenny … The noble PZ
Hath told you Kenny was obnoxious:
If it were so, it was a grievous fault,
And grievously hath Kenny answered it …

  66. Ichthyic says

Sastra, you raise some good points

only if one entirely ignores all internet posting behavior, ever.

    It’s the same old canard:

“If one ignores a troll, they’ll go away”

which one, hardly anybody ever does, and two, on the rare occassions someone does, the troll inevitably does not go away.

no, there is a point to reducing the endless noise on any given thread.

there often IS actually useful information on various threads on this blog (which, btw, is one of the reasons I spend time here).

having to wade through the sound and fury of “Kennybots” seriously hampers not only maintaining a thread of conversation, but actually locating useful information to begin with.

Kenny’s NDE “arguments” were entirely refuted the very first day he made them.

the endless repetition was nothing but noise.

I couldn’t disagree more strongly with Sastra’s conclusion.

  67. Sven DiMilo says

By the way, my references to various highly skilled comediennes in bikinis should be read only to reflect the fact that during the program’s run from 1968-1973 I was ages 9-14.

  68. Ichthyic says

…as an addendum, one of the reasons I spend so little time over on Panda’s thumb is the absolute refusal of the contributors there to bounce the endless noise, whereupon the threads degenerate inevitably into people poking monkeys with sticks.

actually, it’s even worse than that, as the most prolific contributor, Pim, often goes off on multiple post conversations with people who represent little more than complete insanity.

One or two comments is fine, but spending pages and pages trying to seriously address the ramblings of a schizophrenic is hardly useful to anybody.

    Just to be clear:

Given the choice of playing games mocking Kenny, or seeing his departure MUCH sooner, I would ALWAYS choose the early exit over the fun of poking them with sticks.

  69. Alex says

    Ichthyic @ 103,

I was more referring to kennies being used as practice. That’s more what I agreed with. I think it is good to be exposed to their arguments and techniques. Although, as you point out, and has been pointed out by others, there comes a point when nothing more productive develops and the thread gets clogged with their incessant repetition. What crossed my mind was a way for these posters to be marked somehow, visually next to their handle, as ban-pending, or something.

My intention wasn’t to necessarily dispute PZ dumping him specifically.

  70. says

Ah, Laugh-in. I’m told that my Grandfather loved that show…

    I was -7 to -1 years old…

So long Kenny. No longer will I be able to kill time by reading your posts. I guess I’m just going to have to find something productive to do instead. :(

  71. says

Awwww. Kenny fall down, go boom.

(looks sadly into his empty back of bamboo chips)

Ah, well. Won’t take too long for the next annoyance, that’s for sure. That they might learn better is too much to hope for. (This would leave more time for discussing of the science and not so much wasting of bandwidth wrestling with teh burning stooooopid!)

Unfortunately, the brains are not so engaged while the fingers are keyboarding.

    The MadPanda, FCD

  72. says

OTOH, I never did understand the point of answering Kenny, or anyway, more than a couple short answers and a “fuck off, moron.”

PZ stopped the troll feeding, but conceivably it would not have been necessary…

    Ichthyic #103 wrote:

I couldn’t disagree more strongly with Sastra’s conclusion.

You and Brownian make a good case that the number of Kenny’s posts had gotten out of hand. Okay. I didn’t read all the way through every thread, but it seemed to me that most of the Kenny-stuff wasn’t coming directly from Kenny, but from people arguing with Kenny. Voluntarily.

I just don’t have that much trouble “wading through” posts I’m not interested in. I don’t even have to click open the email to see what it’s about. Others may find it more irritating. At any rate, he’s banned and doesn’t seem to be much mourned. Au contraire.

Years ago I used to help monitor an atheist chat room, and we would have the same problem with regulars who came in specifically to argue. About half the atheists were appalled that we AOPs would let a creationist or an Objectivist or a presupper go on and on against us — and the other half seemed to live for the sheer joy of going after a ‘real live virtual’ target while in a safe and friendly forum for a change. So what do you do? Tell the folks who are happy that other people are having trouble concentrating? Online?

I think I was a bad Op. Too easy. If you were at least trying to make some sort of half-baked argument, dragging in some sort of flimsy evidence, and doing both in a way that was semi-coherent and borderline responsive, I wouldn’t kick you. Of course, it was IRC, and the alternative to watching a lame religious debate was yet another argument over Ginger vs. Mary Ann or Kirk vs. Picard.

  74. Ichthyic says

What crossed my mind was a way for these posters to be marked somehow, visually next to their handle, as ban-pending, or something.

it has often been proposed that scienceblogs adopt a model similar to that of slashdot, that allows comments to be voted up or down.

I’m 50% on that one, as I can see how it would eliminate a lot of the noise, but it also makes threads much harder to peruse if one is coming late into a thread.

frankly, PZ has a pretty good record of reacting to abusive posters like Kenny, and it “works well enough”.

  75. Sven DiMilo says

    But Glen, the thing(s) is/are:
    a. You can’t get everybody to ignore trolls like Kenny who just kept on serving up the big steaming platters of stoopid. The SIWOTI effect is too powerful.
    b. Kenny in particular was clearly not going to go away even if ignored. I suppose there’s always the killfile installation, but short of that he was really munging this place up in a noisome fashion.
    Good riddance.

  76. E.J. Thribb says

    So. Farewell then
    Kenny.
You predicted you would be banned,
    And now
    You have been.
    Maybe that prediction
    And its fulfillment

    Or maybe not.

    You bastards!

Kenny McCormick is a character on Comedy Central’s “South Park,” an animated comedy show portraying the antics of four third- (now fourth-) graders in the Colorado town of South Park. During the first few seasons of the series, it was traditional that Kenny would be killed, at which point his friends Stan and Kyle would respond with “Oh, my God! They killed Kenny! You bastards!” Kenny would always return in the next episode. At one point they “really” killed Kenny and he did not return to the series for a couple of seasons. This is a reference to a Pee-Wee Herman catchphrase. Pee-Wee Herman was a character in a few movies and on the television show “Pee-Wee’s Playhouse.” He was portrayed by Paul Reubens. When someone called Pee-Wee a name, told him he was being silly, etc., he would respond with this, repeating it each time until his foil gave up. Please see: Paul Reubens

    Expelled!

Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed is a “documentary” starring Ben Stein, which claims that Intelligent Design proponents are being expelled from the scientific community. The scientific community, along with most neutral critics of the film have seen that this is a work of propaganda by creationists to denounce the Theory of Evolution through the use of argumentum ad Hitlerum and other types of fallacy. A huge irony of the film is that PZ Myers, author of the blog Pharyngula and a professor of biology at the University of Minnesota, Morris, who was interviewed for the film, was kicked out of line at the Mall of America when he went to see a free screening. The producer of the film didn’t want him there, and so expelled him. Please see: Expelled

I’m not a scientist by profession, but I am an empiricist and a naturalist. I come here rather than, say, Panda’s Thumb, because I like the philosophical tone – I get lost when people start throwing things like gene sequences around.

This site, from my perspective, is mostly about using science to combat anti-science like creationism, ID and a great deal of other viewpoints based upon religious perspectives. That the people who wish to contribute to this process are the same people who have an active distaste for religion is unsurprising to me.

They aren’t bashing religion using science as an excuse – they’re bashing it using science as a tool. Which is what science, as far as I’m concerned, is for. Carl Sagan described it as a candle in the dark – and that’s probably the best analogy I’ve heard.

Do I believe in God because my parents told me that there is one? No.
You could discount the Bible out of the evidence and I would still believe.
    Why?
Because, I believe in eyewitness evidence. If you look at all the people that have had Near Death experiences and afterdeath communication, they all report back that there is something beyond this existance. Not only that but there is a bunch of scientific studies about these that exist (google is your friend). Near Death is different than out of body and they make that distinction in the studies.
Now, I know what you are going to say that this is all in their mind that is creating this. Well, in a lot of the studies the people having this are brain dead. In other words there is no activity being registered by the brain during these studies.

    yup. Owl is correct.

If you really knew what heaven is like. I mean really knew, you would not want to stay on this earth.

I believe it is real from the evidence that I have found and even from NPR they had a scientist on doing scientific research and I would imagine using a scientific method to see if this is real. There are too many people having these NDE’s for this not to be real.

So, in reality I have more than faith now. I feel that I have actual evidence and we are on the border of getting even more evidence that can be proven at least in scientific terms from the point of view that you live on beyond death.

What seems to be happening is that our eyes are limited here and can only see limited colors and light. However, in this other dimension we can see more colors, light, shadow and we can see a lot better than our best eyes can see here.

What I also find interesting is that ideas related to that of the M-theory or membrane theory which has dimensions right on top of the other seperated by membranes could have it’s own physics properties and it’s own worlds. Quantum Physics just gives me goosebumps all over. This stuff is awesome!

It seems from what people are saying that we are more than just a physical body, but we are a form of energy and we cannot see this energy in our own dimension. However it exists in another they we cannot yet see.

When millions of people are telling me that there is something beyond this life and they give detailed descriptions of what happened while they are dead and doctors and nurses are freaking out because that is what happened this tells me it is real and goes well beyond faith and so called myths.

I challenge everyone on here to at least crack your mind open slightly and do your own research.

Did I say that. I am just saying that I think you might be afraid of the answer that’s all.

If people are indeed surviving out of the body and can be verified scientifically then the rest of science is going to have to catch up.

See, when I see evidence from millions of people and evidence that they are beyond this life then I know it is real. Anyway that is where you are overlooking it. Millions of people with after death experiences.

If millions of people can describe in detail the scene while they are dead and then confirm it with doctors/nurses or other then that really validates everything I have been saying. I think this is just a wee bit beyond faith and myths here.

I believe in those people that die and come back and they said there is God and Heaven and all that. It all makes sense. Why wouldn’t it be better beyond this school we call life?

Er, if it’s so great why did they come back? If I saw a place that was better I’d go there. And you’ve never been able to explain why it is that people always see the god of the culture they’ve been brought up in. Some people have even seen faeries, like I pointed out in another thread (which you conveniently ignored) – does that mean faeries are real?

And as for multiple dimensions and quantum theory, well, what you’re doing is no different from what our ancestors did thousands of years ago when they came up with the idea for religion in the first place. There were things they didn’t understand (the sun, the moon etc.) so they came up with reasons for why they did what they did, and called them gods. Once we worked out that the sun and the moon were physical things (a star and a big, orbiting rock) they stopped being gods.

All you’re doing is using a realm of science (quantum theory) that isn’t fully understood (yet!) and attaching mysticism to it. You can do this because you’ve got nothing to stop you; if people hadn’t discovered evolution or astronomy or any of the other scientific explanations for things then you’d be just as happy to claim those as ‘evidence’ for your beliefs.

Just another god of the gaps. As soon as a new gap appears, so too does a new god. Unfortunately for you, science is the ultimate gap-filler.

No, it’s that there is no real scientific evidence. Just anecdotes from people who didn’t even actually die. If you don’t understand why that’s not “real scientific evidence,” then you don’t understand what science is.

  162. NobodyKilledKenny says

Why does atheism limit minds instead of freeing them. I believe in science and I also believe in God. How can that be!?!??!?!

How can I love the progression of science and love God?

Probably because my mind is not chained with a limited world view like atheism. Atheism chains your mind and your view and closes your mind. It actually is 12 steps back and not forward.

It is a limiting of the mind, not an enlightenment. It is not a freedom of thoughts, it is a restriction of thoughts.

You can both love science and love what it does and have an open mind there and also have an open mind when it comes to the after life as well. It is good to allow people to gain through science and also through spiritual progress.

    Believers Science handbook:

Tactic #4691: Use the term science in such a way that scientists appear as faith-based lunatics and believers are the only people who truly care about science.

    Phrases to use:
    * “Don’t you care about science?”
    * “Science is a great things”
    * “Scientists are hostile and intolerant”
    * “Militant Atheism”
    * “Religion is a tool for our spiritual side”

    Quotemine:
    * Stephen Jay Gould
    * Albert Einstein
    * Charles Darwin
    * Sir Issac Newton

    Do:
    * Equate atheism with atrocities
    * Mention theories that have been superseeded or marginalised as time has gone on
    * Talk about but scientists are close-minded
    * Claim that belief is verified because millions believe
    * Talk about morality and free will
    * Make sure to mention God as much as possible
    * Claim persecution when someone refutes your argument
    * Use the first cause argument, that’ll get ’em by surprise

    Avoid:
    * Any interpretation of the universe that doesn’t have the resurrection of Jesus at it’s core
    * Providing evidence to support your claims about the spiritual
    * Using the phrase “creationism” or “intelligent design”. It’s currently called “teach the controversy” (though there is no controversy, God is right and they aren’t)

    Remember:
God is working through you so you can’t be wrong, everything you write is backed by God’s omnipresence and he has your best interests at heart. God loves you and will reward any persecution you receive because of your beliefs. Those unbelievers just don’t understand science the way you do, you are wise because you have God on your side. Remember, God is perfect, therefore so is your argument. They are without God, so they are wrong already.

Kenny, your trying to hard. Maybe if you went back to the words in the book you would see what they really meant. Thinking is allowed. The most precious gift God gave man was free will. Saltpeter is potassium nitrate, KNO3. It was once thought to act on your peter as salt acts on the earth, e.g., to render it incapable.

It doesn’t, really. And of course, it was a joke. No woman in her right mind wants nerds to be emasculated, since it’s well known to intellingent broads such as moi that nerds are the only men worth having around, nudge nudge wink wink.

They are not at all the same thing. The people that die and come back tell what was going on after their death in detail. How is that possible with the others?

A man who died who was on NPR actually met a relative that he did not know. He came back from death and talked to his mom and she had a picture of his uncle that had died before he was born. How is this possible?

How is it possible that you can see in detail (without making anything up) what is happening when your eyes are shut and your heart and brain are dead? Not only that but people have seen what is in the next room when they were dead. How can you explain all of this?

Clearly there is something here. This is not 10 people that have seen big foot either, this is millions of people that have died and come back and told us what it is like for them. Why does that have to be wrong?

How can that be a delusion?

    too late!

    ruuuunnnnnnn!!

  222. Ragutis says

Kenny, could you substantiate your repeated use of the word “millions”?

In return, I offer you a link that while an incomplete list, documents many more than “10” Bigfoot sightings. Also, I could tell you to look up Project Blue Book which investigated over 12,000 UFO sightings and encounters. I’m sure I could turn up more, but it’s late and I’m not the one repeatedly making absurd claims. I don’t expect you to provide a list of a few million names, but a substantial portion would be nice. Hell, I’d settle for documentation of 10% of however many millions there are.

So, get to work. It’ll probably take a while, but if you stop posting, that’ll save you some time and you can come back to us with x hundreds of thousands of testimonies and rub them in our close-minded atheist faces that much sooner. We’ll be waiting.

  223. Kenny says

Well UFO’s could be anything from lights in the sky to testing by government weather equipment.

    Here:

This death phenomena has not been properly studied through scientific means until the late 90’s.
Since this time there have been 5 independent studies published by different groups.
One study is from Sam Parnia’s group, a study from a dutch group, two studies in the US,
and the last in the UK.

All of these studies are looking at when they have reached clinical death (Cardiac Arrest).
All concluded at least 10-20 percent who have reached death and brain has stopped functioning
appear to have a fully functioning mind and conciousness. In other words they are able to have
lucid and well structured thought processes, they have reasoning, they have memory formation and
recalled exactly what they were seeing and what happened to them.

People who have died can explain in very detail what exactly happened. He gives an example
of just how detailed they are.

“At 9:20 DR. Smith walked into the room and he was wearing a pink tie and as he walked into
the room he tripped over a bucket and he dropped all the instruments and then he swore.”

This is when they are supposed to be clinically dead.

  224. Carlie says

what is the purpose of “dsmvwlng”?

PZ used to do it routinely before he instituted the dungeon, and it’s still occasionally used for warning shots before a total ban. It lets the comment stand so that people can parse out the idiocy if they care to, while making it easy to skip over. It also lessens the appeal so engagement and thread takeover is minimized. Also, sometimes the garbled text seems to make more sense than the original, which is funny.

  225. negentropyeater says

    Kenny,

I am glad you are banned, or at least banned in principle. It’s impossible to have a discussion with you. Some of us accepted to go in the details on some of the supposedly recent scientific studies on NDEs (such as the dutch study of patients who had suffered cardiac arrests from pim van Lommel http://www.nderf.org/vonlommel_consciousness.htm, the pam reynolds case http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pam_reynolds) and why these did not represent evidence of a supernatural phenomena, but you systematically ignore our comments and refuse to respond, continue with the same hysterical diatribe over and over.

It’s exactly as if somebody is performing a magic trick in front of you and you want to keep believing it’s real magic. If someone spoils your fun by telling you the trick you block your ears, and say, “you’re making it up” and then maintain it’s magic.

We’re exactly in the same situation, if scientists try to explain to you why these do not constitute evidence of a supernatural phenomena, you say “scientists are making up an excuse”. Your working assumption is that, because they must be atheist, they will make up an excuse to reject the supernatural.
What you refuse to understand is that your working assumption should be exactly the opposite, the scientist thrives to discover something fundamentally new, this is the best way to enter the pantheon of science, so if indeed, NDEs are experimental evidences that put in question all our understanding about consciousness, quantum physics and the lot, this would become a real focus of research, and not the contrary.

You are addicted to your delusion as someone is addicted to drugs or alcohol, and exactly the same way, you will refuse to acknowlege it.

  227. Peter Holt says

Of course, Kenny doesn’t realise that so-called NDEs are actually the work of Satan.

  232. Brian English says

All of these studies are looking at when they have reached clinical death (Cardiac Arrest).

Clinical death is when the brain is dead. You ever noticed how your heart can be removed, and another’s put in its stead and the person doesn’t die. If the brain is dead, then the person is dead. And NDE by definition are near death. The brain is near death, not dead.

  233. says

Oh I can’t help it. Damn it Damn it. SIWOTI.

Kenny you have to be one of the most face plant into the dog shit of life stupid people I’ve even come across. People give detailed, and I mean very personally detailed, descriptions of alien abductions ALL THE TIME. There’s also this little thing called your subconscious. That person may never remember it but there is a very good chance that someone in his family mentioned that relative, or he was in a picture album or all other manor of ways that his existence was at least a small part of the guys past that he doesn’t remember. Your mind can store up those little tidbits of info and they come out in dreams or “NDEs” or other strange ways at strange times. It’s really not that hard to understand… well not that hard for people with brains not swimming in the sewage of religious delusional dumbfuckery like yours. Yes, you are so caught up in your delusions that your brain has completely shut off your ability to assess information rationally.

Clearly there is something here. This is not 10 people that have seen big foot either, this is millions of people that have died and come back and told us what it is like for them. Why does that have to be wrong?

Support your assertions. Links. Studies. Now.

Re: NDE and meeting relatives you don’t know – it’s called “confabulation” and it’s what happens a lot when dreaming or anoxic. I’ve had it happen to me lots (including the tunnel and the lights) back in the days when I was playing around a lot with nitrous oxide. One time, I recall distinctly that I confabulated that Amy Lee of Evanescence had joined Rammstein and I went to the concert and it was great. Typical of confabulations, I came back down from the clouds and couldn’t add details other than “uh, it was great” but my experience was probably more real than most NDE trips to “heaven” simply by virtue of the fact that Amy Lee and Rammstein have been fairly well established as actually existing.

Joking aside, I find it frankly amazing that people take NDE “seeing the pearly gates” stories seriously considering the vast amount of experience people have with anoxia (mountain climbing or mixed-gas diving) and recreational brain oxygen-starvation (alcohol, NO2, etc). I know one acid-head who literally sees god every time he trips. But the creos wouldn’t probably take that as “evidence” – yet they’ll accept someone who’s cardio flatlined and whose brain is anoxic.

Like I said, I’ve seen the tunnel and there was a Rammstein concert at the end of it. Now I can’t wait to die. Maybe if I’m good I’ll get an all access backstage pass.

Canned Stupid works well too. Most of my experiences (and there were many in my younger years) were at the business end of a balloon from a tank in the parking lot of grateful dead shows across the country. Hence hippie crack.

I’ll say I didn’t think of it until you mentioned it but there were many times where I could say I had NDE like experiences where time stopped and you have your own little “adventure”.

I’ve got one of the local news stations on. They just did a segment with some freak talking about his own NDE (sounds a lot like Kenny) and about the ghosts wandering around the television studio. and then there’s Comment #193:

What I also find interesting is that ideas related to that of the M-theory or membrane theory which has dimensions right on top of the other seperated by membranes could have it’s own physics properties and it’s own worlds.

  245. says

    Kenny,

NDEs like OBEs (out-of-body-experiences) and ghosts can be explained rationally through brain activity. In fact we can stimulate areas of the brain to create these effects. We have perfectly valid explanations for the phenomena, so why would we take one which requires such a huge leap of faith? Surely you would agree that the principle of parsimony is the best way to gauge which claim is better. Not to mention that people who experience NDEs and OBEs have visions that are in tune with the beliefs they have; so it would be pertinent to say that unless “truths” about the universe are localised that the mind determines reality.

Let’s take a look at evolution vs the Flying Spaghetti Monster:
    * both explain the origin of life
    * both explain the evidence presented
    * one has a giant monster made of spahgetti flying around
Now with the principle of parsimony, which one would you feel is correct? It’s the one without the huge unknown. So apply this logic to NDEs
    * NDEs can be explained by supernatural causes
    * NDEs can be explained by brain activity
There are no grounds to suggest supernatural causes yet you point to them as an answer even though there is one without the massive unfounded assertion? You aren’t a lover of science at all, just one who is looking for tautological affirmation of your faith to use that as evidence.

People on here see through your nonsense, and by being here you damage the reputations of Christians and Christianity in general. When you offer no insight, make poor assertions and generally act as though you have some intellectual superiority because your insight is not matched by the many people here, all you do is make people think less of Christianity in general. They equate your inane ramblings with your religion. And after many people like you thinking that somehow atheists have missed a basic fact about the universe that conclusively shows their ignorance, surely you could see how they would treat you with such hostility.

You have no evidence for anything, you just keep making assertion after assertion with no foresight into even trying to come up with a scientific explanation. Most of what you are saying already has adequate scientific explanations and it baffles me that even with that knowledge out there you would still appeal to those lines of thought as proof of your imaginary friend. Kenny, you don’t have a clue. It would be better to adhere to the ban to both keep what is left of your dignity and to limit the damage you are doing to your religion…

…or just keep going. It’s fun watching you get ripped apart. Either way :)

I can see where you would get that but disagree. I think his tenacity and ability to craft a decent sentence as well as his complete refusal to look at any new explanations or evidence point to a slightly different station in life.

I think he is in a position of moderate responsibility and authority. He is the manager of a smallish business with fairly mundane tasks and relatively simpleminded people below him. I am thinking manager of a kinkos. He is generally looked up to but not by the brightest bunch so he has an elevated opinion of himself.

If anyone here actually is am employee of a kinkos, you are the exception and I sincerely apologize.

And, in case you missed it on the other thread; on the subject of your “too much proof to post”….again, serve it up in bite-sized portions so we can look it over and either agree that you’ve got actual evidence, or refute it. Put up or shut up.

And two other points… having a PhD doesn’t disqualify you from the right to point out idiots where you see them, and frankly, if this were a simple list of people PZ did not like, I think it’d be MUCH longer… no?

  300. Matt Penfold says

    Pat C,

There are a number of way as I understand it. There using the IP address of the computer the person is using, but that has problems as computers on the same network can appear to the internet to have the same IP address. Banning one person by using an IP address can result in a whole organisation finding themselves banned. There is also banning the username, and email address, but this is open to the obvious abuse of the banned person simply using aliases. There are also ways of spoofing where a computer is located according to the IP address, and they are not that hard to use.

In short, if someone really wants to get around a ban, they can.

  301. Kseniya says

Kenny is not 16. He’s close to 40, and has a wife whose survival is apparently owed to the advancement of medical science. Kids? I dunno. He has a second-shift job of some kind.

  302. Sven DiMilo says

Note that the initial posts above from K under the NobodyKilledK nym were posted at times when K has always (to my knowledge) been at work. Suggests to me that he has weaseled around the ban by posting from a work-related IP.
Why oh why do I care?
p.s. Matt Penfold–it’s possible that certain posts of the past signed “Kenny” were, in fact, “a regular messing around.” But not most of ’em–he really is that stoopid. Was.

  306. says

Yes, that was the real Kenny cruising back for more abuse.

The Dungeon is not a list of people I don’t like, although it is true that I find most of them fairly detestable. You do not get banned here for being wrong, or stupid, or least of all, for disagreeing with me. You do get banned when you ignore the discussion and start saying the same thing over and over again to provoke the same old arguments again. I would have let Kenny sail through if he’d actually ever tried to grapple with any arguments, but he was here only to proselytize ineptly and complain…and yeah, I actually skimmed through all of his comments (I have the tools and the power to do that…I’m kind of like Santa Claus in my omniscience), and he was clearly a clown in a rut.

One last message before heading off.

I am not trying to troll. I just don’t like the intolerance that goes on here and I don’t like the mindset that everyone who is religious or loves God doesn’t love science as well.

I don’t like how people are treated on this blog and the lack of knowledge about religion or why people believe in what they do. It’s not about fairies or something that is beyond belief.

I don’t like how a person with a doctorate can get away acting like he does to people. I personally would never take Myer’s classes and I don’t respect him as a scientist nor a person.

I do like to listen why people feel the way they feel and I don’t mind hearing about how they got to feel the way they do. I do mind when someone goes on a bash fest and I don’t feel like taking crap when I try to layout how I feel about things.

It is one thing to critise religion it is another to just bash it endlessly with a closed mind and bash people and say that they are stupid over and over and over again.

So many people get upset when I post and I don’t come back and answer their questions all the time. They have to understand that I have a life and I can’t always be on this computer all day long. I have too many people asking me things and I can’t possibly respond to everything and still have a life and a job as well. If you had even 50 people asking things of you for this and that on a forum, and you had a job and a wife and things are happening and you are working towards your own business it can get complicated.

The answers are researched and are complicated and take time to type out. It is a hard process. I will not be typing much as I will be on the laptop this weekend.

You all have a good day.

Again it’s just a case of acting indignant in order to gain the moral ascendency and invalidate the opinions of others. It’s petty behaviour, but so effective as the statement draws focus away from his inane ramblings and towards a code of moral behaviour for another, nevermind Kenny hasn’t been keeping to that same moral standard himself. It’s just barbs he’s trying to catch people on to compensate for his own inability to even reason beyond the level of a young child.

Kenny, if you can’t bring evidence to back up your assertions you fail at debating. If you whine and complain about your treatment, then you are using petty means to get your argument noticed. People show respect when respect is earned and the reason people here treat you poorly is because you make post after post claiming your opinion is right while offering no backing, despite being on a science board where evidence is key. People don’t respect you at all because you haven’t showed a single point in your time here where you’ve even considered anothers point of view or even tried to reconcile the evidence presented. Arguing that you don’t respect people is like Ben Stein arguing that believers aren’t respected in the scientific community.

It’s all about works. Not faith, but works. You earn respect, you earn trust and you earn the ability for people to take your view seriously. And on a board for science, it’s all about evidence, just as science is. So if you don’t use evidence, people won’t respect you. If you shut your eyes and block your ears then people will laugh at you

In either your personas as PlanetKiller or Kenny, did you ever stop to think about why Professor Myers holds contempt for those people who use their faith to say and or do inane and destructive things?
Or, would you prefer that Professor Myers keep his big mouth shut when politicians rant about how atheists and other non-Christians are the greatest dangers to this country and should be stripped of all their natural rights?

So many people get upset when I post and I don’t come back and answer their questions all the time. They have to understand that I have a life and I can’t always be on this computer all day long. The fact that you (allegedly) have a wife and a job does not excuse you from acting like a pretentious, petulant asshat of a troll. If anything, the fact that you have a wife and a job makes the fact that you spend your free time trolling on the internet even worse.

The answers are researched and are complicated and take time to type out. It is a hard process. I will not be typing much as I will be on the laptop this weekend.

You have made numerous claims in order to support your petulant attitude. People, in response, want verification of your claims. If you do not want to respond to these requests for verification, then do not make your petulant boasts in the first place.

I gotta funny feeling that’s gonna be a running gag around here for at least the next week.

Well, if you don’t like it, you could always write a letter of complaint…

Kenny, I provided you with a very nice link into the Skeptic’s Dictionary website on the subject of so-called NDEs. They HAVE researched this scientifically, and they HAVE found material answers to the way the mind works for people who have recovered from near-death experiences.

But I feel like there’s no point in showing you the research, so I just give up. If you want to go to skepdic.com yourself, knock yourself out. If you want to ignore the research, and you don’t respect PZ as a person or a professor, I just can’t see why you post here. It’s not logical or rational. It is, however, creepy.

Have you actually gone to the skepdic.com website? If the answer is no, then I have a few suggestions for us (Note: I do not believe in supernatural suggestions, so this is all tongue-in-cheek):

    1) Garlic to hang over our screens, to drive you off.

    2) A cross and a bible to show you, to keep away the evil spirits.

    3) Silver bullets. Why silver bullets? Well, I’m an old guy, and I sorta liked The Lone Ranger in a campy sort of way when I was growing up. It just seems like silver bullets may do the trick.

Kenny, you’re being scammed with this whole NDE thing. Truly, you are. This argument, as near as I can tell, was settled in 1993. Were you even born by 1993? Relevant to ask, because I was born way after 1492, and yet I still believe the earth is globe.

Now, please don’t answer my post. Please answer in your own head. After reading some of the material I’ve provided, see what you think.

A spiritual explanation for NDEs is as valid as this:

Yeah! I thought when you got a Doctorate, you automatically were made into a nice, understanding, Alan Alda type person who is, furthermore, fine with any kind of woo tossed at them.
Well, I guess I’m just gonna stick with my Masters then. The complete personality change and loss of rationality were the only reasons I even considered getting a Doctorate.

    Feckin idgeit…

Sorry, but this is one of my pet peeves…Columbus had no role in settling the issue of a flat vs a spherical earth…in fact, it was settled well before 1492, and there was no controversy amongst scientists and sailors of the 15th century wrt the shape of the earth. The Columbus flat earth myth was created by Washington Irving’s fantastical The Life and Voyages of Christopher Columbus, popularized during the Romantic-era fascination with the Dark Ages, and unfortunately propagated by K-12 teachers everywhere today.

    More on this here.

Don’t you know, Kenny? We doctors are elitists, we know absolutely everything, that’s why we’re such arrogant pricks. Christ, hope you and I never run into each other as I am a total fucking asshole; most noticeably to fuck nut creotards.

Oh, wait, I’m sorry, knowing absolutely everything is reserved for religion. Shit, I’m such an asshole.

  345. Maria says

Wow. Well. I think I covered all sinners, I don’t include sexual preference something sinful, since it has been proven to be something biological. And I appreciate that other people can see my writing flaws. I am a girl. I do like science. I liked this blog because for me as a christian (of sorts) it is amazing to me that the typical athiest has more of an open mind than the typical christian. Of course my observations are small and limited to my sphere of influence and the areas of the world I choose to observe. I don’t look every where, I don’t know everything, and I certainly don’t think it’s my place to tell someone they don’t belong. I was just encouraging Kenny to maybe stop with the rabid foaming at the mouth, the histrionics and such.
    But I’m just sayin’.

  346. Maria says

    Addendum:

I may have used words like queens and queers, but I was addressing Kenny and the belief that he held (the impression he gave me anyway). I personally have no problem with people who are homosexual. Love is love.
I am sorry if my writing is not clear. Again, I am not all that and I am willing to admit that.

Please don’t read too much into what I say. I just have my opinion too. If you misunderstand me, that is your problem.

  347. Maria says

God, God, god, gods, Logic, Truth, or Santa Claus. What ever matters to you.

I am surprised at how eager people seem to be to be … offended. I never meant to offend anyone. My god, your god, you intense belief there is no god, even scientologists. Freedom of Religion, which I interpreted to include the freedom to not have one. The more I read, the more I catch how I offended someone or other. I apologize. Hope you get over it.

    *facepalm*

    *ow*

Maria? You can stop “apologizing” now.

I, a random atheist on the Internet, give you permission to relax. You can believe in God. You can believe in apokatastasis. It’s fine. Just… chill.

    Ichthyic,

Mousegestures happened (as well as the inbuilt feed aggregator and mail – and superior crash recovery).

And FF gobbled up all my memory as soon as I had more than four windows and fifty tabs open. Opera fits my way of browsing, FF doesn’t.

    CortxVortx,
Jesus’s a bit tied up at the moment. Perhaps that goes for Kenny too.

Somehow, the phrases “four windows and fifty tabs” and “as soon as” don’t seem to go together… ;-)

Wow. And I thought *I* was a power user. Sili, never mind the RAM upgrade, I’d need a BRAIN upgrade to handle that.

  356. Sili says

I fail to see the problem …

I read a lot of comics that update once a day at a said time so I open them all in one go. That’s easily thirty tabs.

I pull up most posts on the blogs themselves in order to get to the comments. And again I prefer to get most of the updates in one go rather than opening them one at a time.

And then there’re the outlinks. It’s not always I have the patience/attention span (still don’t have my head in order) when I read a post, so I open the links in the background to read later.

To make matters worse I’m one of those people who put off to next week what I should do today, so I often have some of those pages left over from the day before.

Then there’s the constant backdrop of news, mail, social sites (Livejournal and Deviantart mostly) and the radio that I keep in their own window until I log off.

And so on and so forth.

Currently I have six windows with 3-10 tabs each open and it doesn’t weigh down Windows the way Firefox did. It may have gotten better after the update, but I prefer Opera (just the order Opera runs through tabs with ctrl-tab is more logical than the way FF does it). Opera works the way my mind does (only better of course) and I rather miss a lot of it’s features when using other programs; I can’t count the number of times I’ve tried to close and minimise windows in other programmes with mousegestures. If there’s a Linux flavour that has that kinda interface I’ll adobt it in a heartbeat (been meaning to switch for a while anyway).
