Another Hovind sliming his way across the country

Kent Hovind may be rotting in jail, but his son Eric is continuing the family tradition of lying to the public. Eric Hovind is going to be here in Minnesota on 28 October,
giving a talk at the Russian Evangelical Christian Church in Shakopee. I don’t think I’ll be able to make it, but this could be interesting. Not Hovind — I understand he’s just doing his daddy’s same old patented high-speed babble with corn-pone jokes — but these new Russian evangelicals have been in the news lately, and have been exhibiting a particularly virulent strain of hate and ignorance. I know nothing about this particular Shakopee church, but I’d be curious to find out if there’s any connection to Watchmen on the Walls. If anyone goes, let me know.

Uh, and if you’re gay, you might not want to go. Just in case.

maybe I’m being too callous, but evangelical terrorists on a killing spree right in the USA is the very best thing that could happen to discredit and possibly obliterate the fundagelical movement altogether.

Or maybe if you’re gay or gay-friendly you should go, looking as ordinary as possible, with the possibility of standing up at the right moment and shouting, “I’m gay,” “My sister is gay,” “My mother is gay,” “I work with gay people–and so do you!” (doesn’t everygbody whether they know it or not?) or whatever seems appropriate.

Great, a Hovind is going to be in my city. Not that it really matters – he’s literally preaching to the choir and not to the school board…yet…

  5. J-Dog says

I think that someone should stand up at the meeting and offer to give Hovy Jr. some KY Jelly to pass on to his Old Man. It would be the Christian thing to do.

  6. Schmeer says

Perhaps we can test the waters at this church by telling them that Hovind Jr. is gay. If they show no violent reaction then we have an indication that they may be the less harmful sort of fundies.

  7. raven says

Someone should ask Hovind the younger how much loot they managed to hide from the IRS?

What did they spend their ill gotten gains on? They are known to have lots and lots of weapons?

About those weapons. Do they have any intention of becoming Terrorists for Jesus?

How many charges was Kent Hovind convicted of? I’ve read in various places that is was 59, 64, or 63 counts.

Does Eric have any plans to follow in his father’s footsteps? By lying, cheating, and committing as many crimes as possible before the cops manage to figure it out and track him down.

There are a lot of fascinating questions that E. Hovind could be asked. I’m sure none of them will be.

  8. says

    They’re Latvian, not Russian.

Actually, many of them are Russians who used to live in Latvia, so calling them Russians is not completely wrong (there are also many Russians from Russia, and Ukrainians among the members). A nasty crowd, no matter where they are from.

  9. says

    T_U_T,

Domestic religious terrorists have been on a killing spree right here in the U.S., targeting Ob/Gyns and their staff, for some time now. So far, no evidence that these crimes are discrediting the movement.

  10. ShameOnYou says

Shame on all of you. You are so MEAN. The absolute scary part is that you display it so proudly. I am quite certain I would rather have Eric Hovind as a friend than any one of you who are so willing to attack another human being just because you are convinced that your beliefs are better. If there is a hell it is hell because it is full of people like you.

  11. Michael LoPrete says

    ShameOnYou,

You’re at a blog where a good number of people would consider the teaching of Creationism to children a form of child abuse. Of course we are mean to people like Eric: he is POISONING people.

  12. ShameOnYou says

I promise this will be my last post. You truly BELIEVE he is poisening people. Your deep anger towards the possibility that there may be a God to whom you are accountable has so thouroghly poisened you that you can’t even see it. Imagine living in a city of 100 people where the kindest emotion anyone could generate for his neighbor is like comment #6. Did his comment actually make anything anywhere better? Before you respond to this post, ask yourself ‘what do I feel in my heart?’. If you are sure of your intellectual superiority and that this backwoods fundi just does not have a clue, then you’re too far gone. There is not even a chance for you to comprehend my perspective. I’m sorry.

  13. J Daley says

Sigh. It never fails with these gay-bashers:

At 56, Ledyaev is still youth-oriented enough to promote his vision of global theocracy through elaborate, large-scale Christian rock operas that Ledyaev writes, directs and stars in, and which are replete with lasers, smoke machines, and spandex-clad actors in ghoulish makeup.

  14. Rey Fox says

The Hovinds and their ilk “attack” us every single day. They say we can’t possibly be moral. They consider us incomplete. They think we’re poisoning children, too. They think we’re not fit to hold public office. It tends to make us a bit testy, is all I’m saying.

  15. raven says

How interesting. How long have you had a thing for criminals? Have you looked up his father’s criminal record on wikipedia? Take you 5 minutes. Or do you visit him at his prison?

Hovind the senior is a sociopath who couldn’t tell right from wrong if it bit him on his ass. That is why he turned a tax evasion case into a decade long prison term.

Both of them are professional liars for Jesus. Emphasis on lies. They just string proven lies together and call it creationism.

Ever here of the 8 commandments? There used to be 10 but you fundie cultists had to toss the ones against murder and lying. So who is on your hate list? There is no commandment that says fundies have to hate but they all act like there is.

  16. raven says

Your deep anger towards the possibility that there may be a God to whom you

The deep anger is directed at the fundie death cultists such as yourself who seek to overthrow the US government, set up a theocracy, and head on back to the dark ages.

The Xian cultist death squads that have roamed the US for over a decade don’t help either. Or the attack on science and the attempts to teach bronze age mythology as science to our children. Or the human child sacrifices by the thousands.

There is a backlash against the cults. As you sow, so shall you reap. You deserve it.

While I was unamused by the joke in #6 — for joke it was — your self-righteousness is hypocritical and irritating.

Kent Hovind was a liar and a fraud; a constant violator of your religion’s commandment against false testimony. While his lies about the science of evolution were not themselves worthy of jail, his lies and fraud about his finances were found to be deserving of a felony conviction.

Given that fundamentalists are so often viciously cruel towards everyone who doesn’t believe as they do, and demand more and more jails and tougher laws and harsher sentences and more criminalization, I think a little mockery of their misfortune once the tables are turned and they are caught by their own lies is only to be expected.

If there is a Hell it is made up of people like US?
Yippee! We have found heaven. NOT.
In my neck of the woods the Ukrainian churches are spreading the story that Evolution is based on circular reasoning. In my opinion they are lying. They should be held accountable as they are teaching this to mostly uneducated immigrants who have a scant understanding of English. These immigrants are making choices for their childrens education based on what their ministers tell them.
Shame on You, This is much meaner to the next generation of immigrants than anything we say here. But people like you will never understand it. You will never understand that a child who is denied an education becomes a dependent on the system while those who become educated are assets to the system.
Also your kind never fail to tell me and other non-believers how wrong we are. We in turn simply refuse to believe in your imaginary playmates and truly wish that you would all just grow up.

  19. Dave says

As a longtime resident of Sacramento, the city mentioned in one of the articles in this post, I can attest to the nastiness fo these people. One of them recently ran for school board, on a platform soley based on rabid homophobia and Jeezus-speak. His kids (and others, no doubt from their church) were out campaigning for him with crude anti-gay signs and pamphlets…
This is not unlike the children of the members of the white power movement, minds poisoned by their parents from birth. Utterly disgusting.

  20. Dustin says

Here we have a terrorist organization on our own soil, poised to go on a killing spree. What are we doing to stop these terrorists? We’re locking up scientists who send bacteria through the mail in violation of a ToS, abducting Canadian software engineers and beating them with a metal cable, and occupying Iraq.

Praise W, scourge of the terrorists!

Why would we have any kind of anger toward something that doesn’t exist. Hint, atheism means lack of belief, i.e. there is no god to be angry about. However, we have every right to be angry about the evil that people like the Hovind’s do while using your non existent god as justification for their evil and call it good.
