    It’s interesting that finally the Franklin quote about not sacrificing liberty for security is actually being used to good purpose. Traditionally it is mostly called into service by right-wingers to attack gun regulation.

    Why aren’t college students throughout the nation marching in the streets? This is the government George Orwell warned us about.

    I suspect they’re mostly too disillusioned, too tired, and/or too indifferent – and I’m not even considering that a significant minority (hopefully not a majority) favor increased governmental power and authority.

    I seem to recall way back in the mists of time (around 8th grade) there was a poem we read about people in a town who kept looking away when other people were carted off — it had nothing to do with them. Am I making this up? Can anyone think of a famous poem that school kids used to read about ignoring the loss of freedom or rights?

    I suspect the paucity of social action by students is a reflection of the general malaise in our society.
    (Maybe as a child of the 60’s I just expect too much.)

    Oh forget it. I am just going to sit back and enjoy this one.

    This is probably the poem you were thinking of … short and sweet … First they came for the communists, and I did not speak out–
    because I was not a communist;
    Then they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out–
    because I was not a socialist;
    Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out–
    because I was not a trade unionist;
    Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out–
    because I was not a Jew;
    Then they came for me–
    and there was no one left to speak out for me.

    Clever little piece, but it could use more squid.

    To “people” like “Jonathan Badger”, it is apparently permissible to use the Police State to terrorize, murder and torture those who own the “wrong” type of guns.

    “Jonathan Badger” needs to learn that liberty is only safe when those in government know that if they try to destroy freedom, those who aren’t shot will be hanged.

    As such, those who impose and enforce “gun regulation” all need to be killed.
