Video: Meteorologist Resigns Following Right-Wing Threats Over Climate Change Coverage

For a couple years now, I’ve paired fighting climate change, with fighting fascism. There are a number of reasons for this, but the biggest one, from the climate perspective, is that fascists value power far more highly than the environment, and so they’ll happily continue denying climate science, and using fossil fuels. When it comes to crises that can’t be ignored, well, the recent refugee boat disaster, which I’ve seen some right-wingers celebrating, is a good example of the eco-fascist solution. In the meantime, they are actively terrorizing people just for reporting on what’s happening. An Iowa meteorologist named Chris Gloninger has been getting death threats, some bad enough to give him PTSD, and has decided to resign because of it. Can’t blame him. Obs, his network is not sufficiently supporting him in this.

When it comes to frenzied media coverage, well, the recent submersible incident has (some) Pharynguloids celebrating, and that is a good example of the anti-wealthy sentiment. Not a solution, obvs.

As I said on the relevant post, I have a hard time judging people for celebrating the demise of people whose entire claim to fame is their ability to ruthlessly exploit other people, and drive us towards extinction. That goes double when they were killed by the same reckless arrogance that they use to dismiss criticism of their abuses.

I do feel bad for the kid, though. I doubt he would have turned out well – extreme wealth fucks up the human brain – but from what I’ve heard, he was very much pressured into going.
