My Skepitcon pin-up calendar photos

I was initially hesitant when JT Eberhard asked me to be a part of the Skepticon 4 pin-up calendar, but now I’m really happy that I did it. Not only is it a great fundraiser for an awesome conference, but I’m alongside amazing women like Rebecca Watson and Greta Christina. Plus, it’s sexy and artsy – like this photo from last year.I definitely had my reservations. I mean, I’m already known for my boobs, and I don’t want to get pigeonholed into some sexy stereotype when I have many intellectual accomplishments. But at the same time, it’s my body, and I don’t want others telling me what I can do with it. If I want to pose nude, then damn it, I should be able to!

These are just the proofs – for the high quality version, you’ll have to buy the calendar.
I’m not embedding them here since full nudity is NSFW, but you can check out my favorite shot here.

Be gentle!

You may be joking, so I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt. But, can you actually show anyone saying that “combining humour and the implication that a woman might be attractive was evil and sexist”? I bet you can’t. You can probably find someone saying that joking about women only being valuable for their attractiveness is uncool, though.

I am joking, though I’m trying to work out what makes Jen’s post today acceptable, and Hemant’s comment yesterday unacceptable. In my mind, neither is inappropriate, but clearly there’s something I’m still missing. I suppose it’s only sexist if a *man* derives humour from female sexuality.

I suppose it’s only sexist if a man makes a joke about an attractive woman.

Sigh. You should really go back and reread the post from yesterday. The problem with Hemant’s post wasn’t that he made a joke about an attractive woman. It was that the “joke” was that an interview with Kari was only worth posting because she’s attractive. Many women still deal with the idea that they are only valuable insofar as they’re attractive, and the joke reinforced that sexist notion.

*rubs my face* Look at the clues. ALL the clues, and you should have realized it. Hell, I have an added edge on this one. I still clicked, goddamnit. “It’s NSFW? That *can’t* be Jen’s. Click. Sigh.”

Didn’t fall for it. (It helps having an RSS reader full of obvious April Fool’s jokes to get you on edge.)

Thanks for that, Gretchen. A couple of months ago Amanda Marcotte mentioned in an article on Pandagon (that I can’t find now) that one thing male feminist/allies can do is refute douchy MRA-type arguments on the interwebs or in real life, since one of the benefits of privilege is that those types of men won’t just write us off as hypersensitive “feminazis”. Also, when men don’t speak up it just reinforces the idea that ours is a culture that accepts misogyny.

In my defence, I’d just woken up and didn’t even remember it was april 1st.Also: Damn you, Jen! *shakes fist*

  9. says

I had just been thinking “I need to think of a good April Fools joke” and got distracted by this blog post…and I still didn’t see it coming.

  10. says

Oh, cool. I wondered if you were the Gretchen who posted at Dispatches. I used to post there as penn, but I recently switched to Jim.

  11. says

Pretty much exactly this. “Oh, this is obviously a joke. Not going to click it. It’s going to link to a page that has some sort of music blasting. And a ‘Successful Troll’ picture.””Oh. What the hell.”

  12. Andrew S says

I didn’t even have to click-through to know this was a joke, but I did anyway to see what it was. Good on you, Jen.

  13. Liberty says

Tsk, tsk, tsk. I opened the page going, “I wonder if Jenn’s doing anything for April Fools’?” and then got completely tricked. Brava!

  14. Jeanette says

Hahaha the worst part about this is that even though I knew it was an April Fool’s joke, I still had to click on the link to see where it led me….

  15. The Artful Nudger says

In retrospect, what would have been far better would be for the comment thread to be full of people complimenting Jen on the artistry of her photo shoot, and tasteful comments about how good she looks in the pictures. We might have been able to get her to check her OWN link.

  16. mcbender says

There’s always Islam. Maybe I should try that next year, see how many death threats I get for ‘apostasy’.

  17. says

I had seen the calendar from last year, so I just thought “Hey, Jen’s in the new Skepticon calendar, cool. *doh!* I wasn’t sure how you were going to top last year’s post but you definitely got me this time around.

  18. Ty says

I admit it. Totally got me.<– constant reader whose first post is admitting he got punked by an April’s Fool joke. The shame.

  19. says

I can honestly say that this is the only Fool’s joke I fell for today. Congrats. (I think having the existing photo is what sold it..)

  20. says

Oh, Jen, now that I have seen the full extent of your loveliness, I simply must express my everlasting love for you. I have seen heaven, and its name is Jen McCreight. Please, I know it’s too forward of me, but I must ask you to be mine.

  21. says

Oh Jen–but the lord is always waiting for you!!! So you still have the chance!(I have 2 minutes left on this.. so it counts!)

  22. HCFSDiscoman says

hahasuspected it was a trick. so i checked out the comments, only to find that it was.not even going to click any of the links.well played though.

  23. says

I usually find that such men dismiss us as ‘white knights’, though.I don’t even know what that means, mind.

  24. Melody says

I’m so glad this was a joke! Not because you aren’t lovely. I’m just not a fan of the calendar.

  25. SonOfRyan says

*simultaneous disappointment at this being an april fools joke and dissapointment in myself for being completely taken in by this, to be fair, it was april 3rd when I read it*

  26. Sam says

See, I don’t think it would be a bad thing if Jen DID pose for the calendar. Granted I think this because Jen is an attractive woman, but she is an attractive woman who is a well informed and intelligent sceptic.Genuine compliment, or am I just a perv trying to make myself appear more honourable? This is the internet, and Occam’s Razor would suggest the latter.
