The twisted logic of the anti-gay marriage movement »« Schrödinger’s Theist

Do you need another reason to despise Facebook?

Here’s one. Mark Zuckerberg is pushing for more oil drilling and pipelines.

Two major tech leaders have resigned from Mark Zuckerberg’s new political group, FWD.us, in protest of the organization’s controversial decision to bankroll ads supporting Keystone XL and drilling in the Arctic National Refuge.

The Zuckerberg group publicly says its top priority is immigration reform. But through two subsidiary organizations it has quietly spent millions on ads advocating a host of anti-environmental causes. The ads were created in support of Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) and Mark Begich (D-AK), and although neither ad mentions the issue, both support immigration reform.

I can understand the importance of political compromise and coalition building, but sleeping with the devil is just going too far.

Actually, Zuckerberg is David Rockefeller’s grandson, and anything but a “newly minted” oligarch.

One more reason I don’t go on that privacy-destroying site. I don’t mean privacy from other people – I mean privacy from Zuck’s friends in the CEO offices.

    …oh… wow.

  6. blf says

FWD.us is another opaque group of self-interested billionaires (think Koch brothers albeit maybe with the ideological and theological fundamentalism), including Bill Gates, Eric Schmidt (Generalissimo Google), Marissa Mayer (Yahoo), Reid Hoffman (LinkedIn), and others. (Elon Musk (Tesla Motors, SpaceX, andSolar City) and David Sacks (Yammer) have resigned from the group.)

New York Times, Silicon Valley Group’s Political Effort Causes Uproar:

The group has faced the most vocal criticism for television advertisements sponsored by its two subsidiaries, which are known as Americans for Conservative Action and Council for American Job Growth. One of those spots takes swipes at President Obama’s health policies. Another lauds the Keystone XL pipeline, fiercely opposed by many environmental groups.

  7. Raryn says

    Zuckerberg is David Rockefeller’s grandson

Except every single source for that claim seems to be antisemitic/white supremacist. There’s no evidence for it except one vague picture of the grandson people claim looks like Zuckerberg.

  8. =8)-DX says

    Zuckerberg is David Rockefeller’s grandson

Citation please. Smells like conspiracy nut BS to me. Google only seems to come up with some odd photo on conspiracy nut sites, his official bio says just “He is the son of Karen (née Kempner), a psychiatrist, and Edward Zuckerberg, a dentist.” while Rockefeller didn’t have any children called Karen or Edward, or marrying a Zuckerberg.

    Total bullshit.

  9. md says

Zuck the weasel, teaming up with the Gang of 8, trying to drive down programmers wages via immigration and selling out Climate change in the process.

    This could get fun.

Good thing I don’t need to believe Zuckerberg is David Rockefeller’s grandson to believe he’s a schmuck.

  11. md says

Zuck’s crack PR team has one website for Dems

    and one for Repubs.

They look alot alike, except for the colors. I love that he’s so unsophisticated as to think he knows how to play the PR game. Im guessing this one didnt go thru K street first.

Oops! In @8 I said “FWD.us is another opaque group of self-interested billionaires (think Koch brothers albeit maybe with the ideological and theological fundamentalism)…”.

That should be “with out” (in case it wasn’t obvious).

Ok so this Greenberg / Zuckerberg thing is getting weirder by the second.

A Jacob Greenberg was arrested for possession of Marijuana and this mugshot was taken. It was later revealed that this could indeed be the man the world knows as Mark Zuckerberg.

His family members include David Rockefeller, his Grandfather. A little strange because Rothschild owns 8% of Facebook shares. Both Rothschild and Rockefeller are well known names….TAP with One World Government associations.
and his other granpa….greenberg…CEO of AIG

TAP – Facebook was funded with $500 million from a CIA owned bank, which was a
bit suspicious. I wonder if Google has similar disguised progeny.

That’s stupid enough to make sense.

(It’s stupid because Zuckerberg is already a Jewish name.)

Whatevs. I love facebook. It allows me to keep up with my homies and points me to cute and hilarious things on the intertoobz that I would never have found on my own*. This new shit is juts a reason to despise Zuckerberg.

I mean, let’s say you found out that olive loaf was invented by Benito Musselini?

You wouldn’t stop liking olive loaf, would you?

    Damn right, you wouldn’t.

*For example, I just watched a short film in which parts of AMC’s “The Walking Dead” were edited together, but the audio was changed so that what you heard matched very closely to the movement of each characters lips character’s lips, was also hilarious nonsense that could not in any way have been in the actual show.

  20. Antiochus Epiphanes says

I am revealing that he could indeed be Bugs Bunny.

That mufucka has been underground a long time.

  21. CaitieCat says

Actually, I would, if the sale of every olive loaf led to more money to Mussolini to screw around with the system. Big difference. Lots of people who invented stuff were assholes. Edison was an amazing asshole all his life. Still invented useful stuff, and for the most part, didn’t use his big money for evil. Ford was an anti-Semitic of impressive extent; used his money to make the world better, even if he justified it by making sure he had an income too (the semi-mythical “creation of the middle class” thing).

But when the assholes take the money we’re giving them, and actively use it to make life worse for us? Then sure as hell, I’m not giving them more money. That’s an easy equation. So I try to use less fossil fuels. So I don’t use Facebook. So I don’t intentionally buy sweatshop-created stuff (and campaign for those who use it to improve their workers’ lives by taking a minuscule amount less profit).

You can make a different choice, and more power to you. But don’t assume that others can’t make that moral choice differently, or see the difference between a long-dead inventor’s association with bad things, and the effects of a man profiting from us and using that profit to hurt us. Your calculus runs differently; I’d fight for your right to have it so. But don’t tell me how I’d make the moral choice the same way you do, because I won’t.

no, it is rotting your brain!

I didn’t do Facebook long. I got on Facebook initially because my 40th high school reunion was coming up and it was a good way to connect and coordinate. Then my crazy Christian cousins from Ohio found out I wasn’t one of them. First they proselytized, then they scolded, then they unfriended me.

The good thing about Facebook is that so much media requires Facebook to make comments. That keeps me from getting into so many internet threads — especially on my hometown newspapers.

  24. Antiochus Epiphanes says

CaitieCat: Sorry. I was being facetious. I thought since this discussion had long gone off the rails, with the whole Rockefeller scenario, that you know…so, sorry. FWIW, I don’t feel that strongly about FB or olive loaf, and am not trying to mock justified moral outrage.

ChasCP; lol i haz a sorry for realz

OK Joel, good point, and prompted by your comment I did more searching, and indeed found that I gotta agree with your observation. There are dozens of posts, but they all seem to go back to a version of the link I shared above.

So, I’ll be cautious about believing it… sure would be curious about the rest of the story . . .

AP, well, only if it’s really good olive loaf.

  28. CaitieCat says

LOL – well, i didn’t think them inappropriate; I just thought you were wrong. ;) but in the end, I understand better now, and thanks for being pleasant about it.

  29. dave001 says

Well, actually, no, I do not need another reason. I hate the whole concept. I hate that every fucking web site seems to have adopted FuckBook as a forum. I hate that Netflix wants me to post what I watch on Fuckbook. I hate the anti-social (“social media” my ass!) aspect of this shit-for-brains attitude that you are being social by sitting in a room not talking to anyone. Mark Sucker Berg owes the world an apology. MZ can fuck off and die.

  30. says

Zuckerberg to me looks like a stunned paramecium. But I don’t lie awake at night fearing or loathing him.

I do loathe Facebook, though. Facebook is a place people go to lie by omission. There is something deeply dishonest about the whole thing.

And the user interface sucks. I’m baffled that a website could become so popular with such a confusing, confounding, non-intuitive UI. It offends me. It’s crap. Google+ is way better.

  31. birgerjohansson says

“As a newly-minted member of the oligarchy, Zuck’s got to pay some dues.”

Also, a small but infuential religious group is pushing anti-environmental causes ( the most well-known member was a secretary under Ronald Reagan who sold off federal land for a pittance). These shills argue that since the apocalypse is coming anyway, we can spoil the environment to out heart’s content.
And of course they argue that environmentalists and others who oppose exploiting naturte are un-american commies.

I wish I could refer you to articles descibing their activities but I foolishly did not write down the sites I used.

  32. David Marjanović says

this shit-for-brains attitude that you are being social by sitting in a room not talking to anyone

Oh my god, the telephone! It’ll ruin the world! *reaches for smelling salt*

Facebook is a place people go to lie by omission. There is something deeply dishonest about the whole thing.

    Please explain.

  33. =8)-DX says

I hate the anti-social (“social media” my ass!) aspect of this shit-for-brains attitude that you are being social by sitting in a room not talking to anyone.

All this shitting on facebook or other sites is just bs. Geez people, don’t like it don’t use it. And if you have to use it, please learn to use the motherdodger. Cull your friends list to your actual friends and family you want “in the loop”, reduce posting to only the most important for people who tend to post rubbish, uncheck all your e-mail notifications and reduce privacy settings so that only people you want can contact you or see what you’re writing.

Tada! You don’t even have to read the user’s manual, just press the buttons (hint: account settings, like, unfriend, close) until it does what you want it to do. The luddites coming out of the woodwork here ares like listening to some red-faced ignoramus angrily complaining about and eventually smashing the transistor radio he bought, because it was too loud and only played one station, badly.

Oh noes social media, people won’t have a real social life!
Oh noes the internet, people won’t read books or learn in school!
Oh noes the camera, people won’t use their eyes!
Oh noes the telephone, people wont make eye-contact any more!
Oh noes the telegraph, people will no longer write!
Oh noes books, people won’t talk!
Oh noes language, people will stop using throaty grunts and hand signals!

  34. =8)-DX says

that you are being social by sitting in a room not talking to anyone.

And this sentence in particular is doubly ironically assine coming from someone (socially!) interacting with other humans by posting a comment on an article he/she/it presumably read – (more social interaction!), on a blog noted for its regular posters who often know each other, sometimes in person.

  35. gravityisjustatheory says

A Jacob Greenberg was arrested for possession of Marijuana and this mugshot was taken. It was later revealed that this could indeed be the man the world knows as Mark Zuckerberg.

He could indeed also be Obama’s Muslim father.

And the gunman on the grassy knoll as well.

  36. says

    #39: =8)-DX

Really? You’re equating Facebook with the telephone, books, and the advent of spoken language? That doesn’t seem a little grandiose to you? It’s just a website. Some websites are nice (like this one) and some are crappy. Facebook is one of the crappy ones.

Geez people, don’t like it don’t use it.

The exact same argument could be used against you as well: If you don’t like it when people complain about sites like Facebook, then why are you joining a thread explicitly about despising Facebook?

Hating Facebook is like screaming into the wind. It’s utterly futile. But it’s also fun. On some level you must understand that, =8)-DX. You’re hating on the haters, which just makes you another hater. Welcome to the club, brother. Bask in the ugliness of unfettered negativity! Admit it. You like it, too.

When I say that Facebook is a place where people go to lie by omission, what I mean is that in my experience people tend to use Facebook to misrepresent themselves. This is Facebook:

“My awesome husband makes EVERY day feel like my birthday!”
“Happy mother’s day, Mom. You are my role model.”
“Hey everybody, look at this photo of my kids cleaning the yard. Aren’t they great kids?”
“Hey everybody, look at this photo of my feet in the sky. I was lying on my back and I took a picture of my own feet. Isn’t that great!”
“Hey everybody, look at this photo of my cat in a box. Can you believe my cat climbed into a box!”

They share only the photos where everybody is smiling and looking sexy and magnificent. They post pithy, guarded, sanitized remarks that don’t reveal their true feelings, because they know that their grandmother, their third cousin, and their girlfriend from 10 years ago will all read it, so they better not reveal too much. And then other people review those sanitized remarks and click “Like” on them, which is the height of stupidity. Rarely does anyone on Facebook say anything truly meaningful or interesting.

Plus the UI is crap. The news feed is difficult to filter the way you want. The Timeline is terrible. And you have to jump through hoops to get the same functionality that Google+ gives you very easily with Circles. The notifications, the sidebars, the messaging system, the placement of the search bar one centimeter above the place you update your status — it’s all a convoluted mess. I’m not a Luddite. I love innovative, well designed technology. Facebook is NOT that.

  37. Amphiox says

Oh noes! Grunts and hand signals! People will stop grooming!

It’s not REAL socialization unless you’re touching hair and eating each other’s parasites.

  38. Dave says

    @dave001 (#35)

There actually is a Fuckbook; it’s a hookup site. They call themselves “the Facebook of sex”.
