“Sodomy, Christianity, and atheism”

It’s God’s love that gives you meaning
It’s God’s love that gives you worth
So there isn’t any reason
To respect you here on earth

In a world without a purpose
In a world without a God
You’re respected as a person…
This is somehow seen as odd.

(rant follows:)

Today’s title is from a hilariously inept apologetics blog; today’s post is… typical.

There’s an insufficiently recognized irony in the culture wars between Christians and homosexual activists. On the one hand it’s become politically correct orthodoxy for atheists to support homosexual rights.

Yet, if atheism is true, homosexuals are worthless. They are worthless, not because they are homosexual, but because, if atheism is true, no one has intrinsic value. We’re just fleeting, fortuitous packets of matter–like sand dunes in the wind.

Isn’t it ironic–don’t ya think? Of course, a hundred dollar bill has no intrinsic value, either; the value it has is the value we have given it. We make our own worth; anyone who can watch children playing and only think they have worth if some supernatural entity bestows it on them, is doing it wrong.

Of course, maybe “value” is one of those words that has specific meaning…

On the other hand, if Christianity is true, then homosexuals do have intrinsic worth. They are creatures made in God’s image. They are fallen creatures, but they are also redeemable creatures. They are sinners, but that’s also true of Christians.

The very religion they revile is the only worldview that makes their existence meaningful and worthwhile–if they avail themselves of the gospel. It’s the only worldview that offers them the hope and promise of healing and wholeness, of having their deepest longings met–if they repent of their sins and trust in Christ.

So lemme get this right. Christians, who believe that “homosexuals do have intrinsic worth”, are the ones leading the charge to deny them the status of equals. (No, not all Christians, of course.) Atheists, who believe that “no one has intrinsic value”, are the ones treating people as people. These loving Christian bloggers, right in the title of the post, take their intrinsically worthy fellow human beings and reduce them to one aspect of behavior (the fact that it is a behavior that is engaged in by some heterosexuals, and is not engaged in by all homosexuals, is another “insufficiently recognized irony in the culture wars between Christians and homosexual activists”)

On a day when Anderson Cooper’s low-key coming-out gives one more example illustrating the accepting attitude of the majority of Christians, the writers of this blog paint themselves into a smaller and smaller corner, facing the wrong way.

Atheism offers them poisoned apples while Christianity offers them the tree of life. Take and eat.

These christian bloggers offer them an imaginary afterlife, in exchange for the freedom to treat them as second-class citizens today.

Whoa, I’m pretty sure you’re not supposed to eat the apples that the Christians are handing out either. I recall a story with a talking snake or something like that.

Weren’t Adam and Eve thrown out of Eden lest they eat from the Tree of Life? Are we so sure this isn’t a serpent sent to trick us?

Yep. And we’re supposed to be grateful to them.

Fortunately, Eve ate from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil FIRST. Imagine if she’d eaten the OTHER fruit first–eternal life without being able to tell what a crock of shit Christianity is.

    Pat Robertson’s wet dream…
