I agree that killing people to make some ill-defined (or even a well-defined) political point is immoral and indefensible (hear that, Obama? Hear that, Bush/Cheney?) But I don’t think that means I have to make common cause with racists. A lot of Charlie Hedbo’s “satire” was simply an expression of the racist hatred that much of the French population has for the visibly non-French. (A.k.a. “punching down.”)

I’d like to thank you, Ophelia, for being on the right side of this issue and getting your facts straight.
Others over at pharyngula are arguing that Charlie Hebdo is a racist publication, out of complete ignorance and are thus engaging in horrific victim blaming.
I do hope people open their eyes and understand that while “intent is not magic”, neither is ignorance of context.

AMM: I’ve seen it asserted quite a few times in these blogs lately, but I’ve only seen two instances used as examples, and when shown the context of the illustrations, it was clear that they were not racist, but anti-racist, mocking those who would use those kind of images in earnest.
So, I guess what I’m saying here is: Put up or shut up. Let’s see this horrible racism.
