I do like a good canal

Ahh that was fun. Went out for a nice refreshing walk – to Parliament Hill then east on Laurier and along the canal and then back here. Pitch dark but all the nicer for that.

Last night we went to the Museum of Nature for nibbles and PZ’s talk on chance in evolution and then we got to wander around in the bird and dinosaur galleries. After hours! Cool or what?

I’m glad you’re able to see more than the hotel while you’re here. Thanks very much for your talk, I’m sorry I didn’t have the chance to say hello.

That is an awesome museum, and I wish I could see it now. After hours must be even better (was there years and years ago for a wedding, yeah, in the Museum of Nature, some creepiness ensued, especially since that museum’s fourth (?) floor is supposed to be haunted…).
I’m missing Ottawa right now but I’m glad you’re having a good time!

Did you happen to notice the locks between the Parliament Buildings and the Chateau Laurier? After midnight it’s fun to go there and watch the bucket brigade that forms to carry all the water back up to the top for the next day.

Blondin – yes I did! I stood there awhile wishing it weren’t quite so cold, because I really longed to go down and walk in that park area next to the locks, but I also didn’t want to stay out in the cold much longer, so I didn’t go down, but instead went down Elgin Street.

Very droll about the bucket brigade. (That is a joke, right?)

It was nice meeting you briefly! I know, sitting in front of isn’t really meeting, but.

More of a lie, really. 😉

I hope you’ll visit Canuckland again (but in nicer weather).

I grew up in Ottawa & always enjoyed watching the boats go through the locks. The Rideau Canal is a lovely bit of early 19th century high tech.

If you visit Ottawa in the summer do check out the locks during the day. BTW is is also interesting to follow the canal on Google Maps & you can see where the water come from (not a bucket brigade ;-).

I love the canal. (I love the canal in North Oxford, too. I believe Dawkins’s house backs onto it. Manchester. Camden. Well I just like canals.) (Not even mentioning Amsterdam.)

I went along the canal in the other direction yesterday morning, then through that string of parks in Centretown.
