If there was any doubt that the US and Israel are rogue, lawless states joined at the hip who are determined to create vast amounts of suffering to people all over the globe to advance their narrow personal interests, their joint attack on Iran should put those doubts to rest.
When you put a person like Trump with a child’s mentality in charge of the world’s largest military, and then pair him with a manipulative genocidal leader like Netanyahu, you have a recipe for unleashing mayhem
We do not where this will lead. All we can be sure of is that once mopre, many, many innocent people will suffer and die.

I was not happy when I woke up this morning to find that the U.S. was at war with Iran over a bunch of baloney about them creating a nuclear weapon. (Officials have stated, repeatedly and recently, that they had no intention of doing that. They’re not necessarily to be trusted; but they have also said that they’ve agreed to allow all the necessary inspections to prove it.)
My first thought after I heard the news was, “Uh, oh: Trump is even more powerful now.” (I’ve read that starting a war is one of the things that wannabe dictators always do because it diverts the news away from all the other stuff that looks bad for them.)
might take people a minute to realize we live again.
Me in 2016 : On the plus side, atleast Trump doesn’t seem inclined to start wars.
Who told Dump to Wag the Dog? With the attention span of a goldfish, he did not come up with this on his own.
tvfnk got the idea from himself circa 2011-2013 when he was predicting obama would invade iran to distract from low poll numbers he was supposedly having.
Netanyahu will be rubbing his hands together with glee. This is precisely what Israel has wanted forever, an attack on Iran together with the US. The crusade to smash all Islamic countries back to the Stone Age proceeds apace.
And western leaders are very concerned about the escalation and criticise Iran for their attacks on US military installations and allies and urge them to seek negotiations instead… seriously?
I can only think of one silver lining to all of this.
Putin is smart. He had a pretend casus belli and a goal lined up before he started. He sold his country on war with Ukraine. It hasn’t gone well. But he’s trapped in it with no clear way out.
Trump is… not smart. Not even close. He and his endless parade of incompetents that piled out of his clown car when he pulled up to the White House have only vaguely implied Iran might get nukes sometime in the future. From their completely annihilated by him nuclear program. Which was spawned from the ruins of a nuclear deal he unilaterally tore up because he was upset Obama’s name was on it. Trump has no plan for this war. He has not outlined objectives. Or why it’s happening now. No one knows why it started, it just… did. No one knows when it will end, presumably it just… will.
That’s as much of a silver lining as I can find. This tragedy would be a farce if it didn’t have such serious consequences. So far the goal seems to be manipulating the news to keep President Pedophile’s Epstein issues out of the headlines. And it’s not even going to do that for long.
Fighting a war requires commitment and focus, two qualities Trump has never possessed.
Probably the best case is that he launches a few missiles, declares victory prematurely, and then forgets about the war he started because someone insulted him on Twitter and it becomes his new grudge of the day.
Renaming the Department of Defence to the Department of War was a bit of a tell. Belligerents have the ear of Trump, and he cares too little about anything to have any moral objection. Whatever gets him praise from sycophants is alright by him.
I really hope the fools who refrained from voting for Harris ‘to teach Dems a lesson’ or whatever feel fucking shit; the people taking the brunt of Trump’s win are doing a whole lot of dying.
I’m guessing Netanyahu all but ensured his reelection this coming fall. He already convinced half the country that the blame for the failure to prevent and swiftly respond to the October 7th 2023 attack falls on the left activists that were protesting his ‘judicial reform’ (ie attempt at authoritarian consolidation, which is still ongoing) rather than on his poor strategic thinking and poor leadership. Now he is Mr Security all over again. As for Trump -- can he use this (and other similar instances in the coming months) to cancel the mid-terms?
Another silver lining is that Trump will stop whining about the Nobel peace prize.
Lassi Hippeläinen @ 12 -- No he won’t.
I know of a (miniscule) silver lining: the stock market is going to crash, due to uncertainty about oil prices and supply, and loss of traffic in the essential Strait of Hormuz, plus the general uncertainty that a sudden meaningless war coming out of nowhere always causes.
So, all the fascist Big Rich Guys who spent money to get Trump elected won’t just lose millions of dollars in the crash: they’ll lose billions of dollars. Well, they got what they wanted, didn’t they?
This small satisfaction, however, in no way compares to the horrible evil that’s been unleashed and that is to come.
@anat #11: I don’t think he’ll manage to pull that off. I don’t think the US delayed or stopped an election even during the US Civil War. Even Trump, Mr Panic-and-declare-an-Emergency himself, will find it hard to justify holding up elections now. Especially as he doesn’t have any say in whether they happen in the first place. States run them.
Trump’s play will be the same broken record on repeat: he’ll say he actually won despite all the evidence to the contrary.
Judd Legum: The money behind the new Iran War
In private calls over the last several weeks, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (MBS) reportedly urged President Trump to attack Iran. …
Since it now seems acceptable just to take out a country’s leader, and given bin Salman’s involvement, I’d be surprised if Iran wasn’t working on targeting the whole Saudi Arabian palace along with all the other mid-East countries helping us and Israel.
garnetstar @ # 14: … the stock market is going to crash…
Reportedly, the surviving leadership in Iran is counting on exactly that, as the primary leverage point which has caused Trump to back down from some of his extreme moves in the recent past. The over-extended, AI-bubble-driven US economy certainly offers a target-rich environment.
However, that report comes from columnist Thomas Friedman, via the “Morning Joe” show, so we need to take it with two barrels-full of salt.

Nethanyahu and DJT are like an old gay S/M couple, Nethanyau leading Trump’s gimp along with a leash. I picked that simile because the sight of Trump’s 80-year-old body is not something I want to imagine.
She-iiit!
-I had not intended to post more on this issue but it is quite “important”.
.
Exact words by the president: “Finally we honor another American soldier, a fallen warria of world. Of wars. And really, terra ” (sic!).
