ICE thugs allowed to freely prey on people

Reports of abuses by the government’s thugs in Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) keep growing. This is hardly surprising since there seems to be a quota, estimated at around 3,000 per day, that they are expected to reach. Combine that with lax recruiting standards that have likely resulted in white nationalists, neo-Nazis, and assorted fascists being employed, coupled with allowing them to be masked and given protection from any repercussions, is it any surprise that the worst impulses of people who are already prone to racist violence have been unleashed? They are now free to violently take into custody anyone whom they just think is an undocumented immigrant, whether they are or not or if they have any basis for that suspicion other than skin color.

The estimable news organization ProPublica has compiled a video dossier of ICE thugs in action, engaging in other violent actions in their drive to round up people. It is horrifying to see case after case of them breaking vehicle windows to grab people and assaulting them even when there are crying pregnant women inside.

A MONTH INTO the new Trump administration, on the predawn streets of suburban Maryland, a high-ranking ICE official stood alongside a Mazda sedan that his officers had just stopped.

The official told a local TV reporter at the scene what was about to happen. “He can either give us a license,” he said, “or we’ll smash the fucking window out and drag him out.” Then, as the driver refused to exit the car, officers broke the glass.

It was one of nearly 50 documented instances of immigration agents breaking vehicle windows that ProPublica has identified from social media, local news accounts, lawsuits and interviews since President Donald Trump took office six months ago. Using the same methods, we found just eight in the previous decade. Neither number is comprehensive. The government releases no relevant statistics.

Use-of-force experts and former Immigration and Customs Enforcement insiders say the tactic was rarely used during previous administrations. They say there is no known policy change greenlighting agents’ smashing of windows. Rather, it’s a part of a broader shattering of norms.

There are arrest quotas, and they are increasingly aggressive. “There’s been an emphasis placed on speed and numbers that did not exist before,” says Deborah Fleischaker, who served as ICE chief of staff under President Joe Biden.

Officers who break glass aren’t being disciplined — they’re being promoted. The official from Maryland, Matthew Elliston, now occupies a senior position at headquarters and oversees field operations on the East Coast. On the other side of the country, a Border Patrol chief who also embraced the tactic, Gregory Bovino, was put in charge of sweeps in Los Angeles. (Neither answered ProPublica’s questions.)

To add insult to injury, the people who were beaten are sometimes charged with assaulting theICE thugs, as in this case.

In Kentucky, agents stopped Martin Rivera and his girlfriend, Jennifer Gribben, a U.S. citizen, while the agents searched for a fugitive. “You said you’re looking for Garcia,” Rivera said in a scene the couple broadcast on Facebook Live and have since deleted. One of the agents replied, “And I found you instead.”

Then they smashed through the car’s window. Gribben later wrote on Facebook that she was beaten “brutally in my head” and that officers broke Rivera’s arm. She pleaded not guilty to charges of resisting arrest and third-degree assault stemming from the incident.

Near Detroit, masked ICE officers dragged 49-year-old Veronica Ramirez Verduzco, an aide at an assisted-living center, out of her car through a window they broke. Ramirez Verduzco still had bloody, jagged scratches up and down her forearms five days later, her lawyer said.

ICE told ProPublica that agents are allowed to use force when civilians don’t follow their commands. But Ramirez Verduzco and others said they were given little time to respond before officers broke their windows.

“They didn’t give me a chance to understand what was going on,” she said in an interview shortly before she was ordered deported to Mexico.

It is absurd to think that these women would even think of assaulting a group of large, heavily armed, masked people when it should be obvious that they were only trying to shield themselves from harm.,

It is clear that what the Trump gang wants are large numbers of people arrested, jailed, and deported, and that their claim that this is to catch criminals is merely a cover.

ICE’s operations appeared to intensify after Stephen Miller, a top White House official and the architect of Trump’s immigration agenda, excoriated senior ICE officials in a late May meeting over what he said were insufficient arrests.

During the meeting, Miller said ICE should pick up any immigration offenders and not worry about targeted operations that focus on criminals or other priorities for deportation, three people familiar with the matter said, requesting anonymity to share the details.

Miller said ICE should target stores where migrant workers often congregate, such as the home improvement retailer Home Depot and 7-Eleven convenience stores, two of the people said.

The message was “all about the numbers, not the level of criminality,” one of the people said.

When you give people who already have a sadistic mindset the freedom to physically abuse people, this is what you get.

Despite the deportation targets and brutality and violations of all manner of due process, the Trump gang is unlikely to achieve its goal of expelling all undocumented people, so we should expect it to do what it always does and that is lie about the numbers.

In a country with over 300 million guns it’s shameful that I’ve not seen a single report of any of these fuckers getting shot. Where are all the good guys with gunz, NRA?

The ‘good’ guys with a gun are supporting this. Apparently they think that people who can’t do their own shootings for themselves shouldn’t be leeching off of them.

One off-duty CBP guy got shot in NYC a few weeks ago. That’s all I’ve heard of. I thought this post was going to be about ICE agents robbing places blind after arresting everyone there. They’ve been doing that too.

More about the tactics being used by ICE in their hiring practices: Recruited and Radicalized: The Making of a Federal Militia.

We need to know about this. In countries where democratic backsliding was stopped, one of the key elements was defections among the powers of law enforcement and the like. I’m not sure in which country, but I’m almost sure it was one of the countries that emerged from the former Yugoslavia, the protesters befriended the police, invited them to coffee, spoke with empathy about how their job must suck. As a result, when the orders came to shoot at the crowd the police refused.

You can bet these cowards know it is a lot safer to arrest abduct landscapers and assisted living aides than to arrest actual gang members who might decide to go down shooting.

Third and last post in this thread, so I will try to make it matter. Avelo Airlines is the first commercial airline to sign a contract with ICE to run secret deportation flights. See https://www.groundavelo.org/ for actions you can take to stop them, to make their brand toxic, until they stop serving fascism. I just sent the complaint email to their leadership and their customer support address. I plan to keep emailing them daily. If we all do it, can we fill their customer support inbox? Other airlines are watching. They need to know this is not a line of business they want to get into.

And, BTW, protests have had an impact on Avelo already -- that is the reason they are reducing, and eventually shutting down, their activities on the west coast. Make some good trouble!

Good advice there from Commander Kang.

“Find common ground (even if they voted differently from you). “You have to find where you have shared pain, shared values, shared hopes. And that often means not fighting about other issues.””

But if you don’t spend all your energy fighting for ALL of your lefty principles, all the time, even/especially with people who agree with 99% of them, that makes you a fascist hypocrite no better than Hitler… doesn’t it? Purity must be guarded, even at the expense of ever actually making a difference. Power corrupts, after all, and if the left ever gained any real power there’s a real danger they might have to take some responsibility and be held accountable for actually delivering the change they say they want. So yeah, nah, no actual power thanks, i can’t defend the concept of democracy right now, i just saw someone use the wrong pronoun.

We deserve a Left that doesn’t desperately need the quoted advice because it’s common sense.
