A last comment on Mano’s rethink of comment moderation: (And yes, I have been avoiding a fourth comment on previous threads out of respect.)

It seems the majority of us welcome this and think it’s long overdue. Some seem to think this is about individuals rather than behaviour.

(Obviously I can’t speak for Mano, I don’t know Mano, and I’ve never communicated privately with Mano in any way, but I think this is a misunderstanding.)

FWIW, I hope [regular commenter] realizes he can still make valuable contributions.

Another seems to feel that just banning all the commenters he doesn’t like would be a more efficient solution. X-D

I don’t really understand, if you’ve got a shortlist of people you clearly already regard as “extreme cases”, why you wouldn’t just ban the buggers and have done. Do you need the clicks that badly or something?

I think Mano’s aim is to raise the standard of behaviour. Not to engage in the tribalism of “my team” and “their team” but the exact opposite.

To be willing to discuss with anyone, provided they are sincere and not trolling, not engaged in the sort of hyperliteralism Mano described in the “New policy” post, and actually interested in the topic rather than looking for a forum to pick fights (or to express their disgust at a particular minority -- which unfortunately has become common here to the point where many minorities have decamped).

To those thinking Mano is “playing favourites” “for clicks” by not banning good faith commenters who have posted a fourth comment, or are paranoid they’ll be banned if they post a correction to a previous comment, I suggest it’s the “spirit” of the rule, not the “letter” that’s important, like any good law.

As with so many things in life, a worthwhile rule of thumb remains; “just don’t be a dick”.

I’m puzzled at your redaction. Rob’s post is public and hence “John” visible to all; Mano’s redaction served the purpose of hiding the name from a private communication only he could see. Although I’m pretty sure we all have a good idea of who it is anyway… we just don’t have certainty.
