Quotes

From the sublime …

“Every religion in the world has denounced every other religion as a fraud. That proves to me that they all tell the truth – about others.” – Robert Green Ingersoll (Thanks to Randy P.)

… to the ridiculous.

“For the record, I do not think I am God. I believe in God. If God ever wanted an apartment in Trump Tower, I would immediately offer my best luxury suite at a very special price.” – Donald Trump, writing in Think Like a Billionaire.

Except that was Trump’s ghost writer Meredith McIver.

It must be a tough job to try to role-play that blowhard. I hope she laughed all the way to the bank.

  2. Rob Grigjanis says

“Every religion in the world has denounced every other religion as a fraud”

Oh, come on. That’s bullshit, unless he meant “there are idiots in every religion who denounce every other religion”. Which just says that any large enough group has idiots.

  3. Holms says

But Rob, the mere belief in a particular version of how spirituality works is an implicit rejection of all other versions.

  4. Rob Grigjanis says

Holms @4: Gosh, that sounds kind of dogmatic. Quite a few folk have come up with the idea “whatever works for you is OK”. Certainly Jainism, Sikhism and the Bahá’í faith go far enough down this path to make nonsense of the quote.

I really don’t understand why some atheists think they have to make shit up about religion in order to discredit it, as though there isn’t enough ammunition already.

Clearly™ the Ingersoll quote was about Religion: Judaism, Christianity and Islam.
Not that weird stuff you reference.

  6. drken says

“For the record, I do not think I am God. I believe in God. If God ever wanted an apartment in Trump Tower, I would immediately offer my best luxury suite at a very special price.”

Oh man, if I was writing a fictional character for a comedy, I don’t think I could come up with a better personality defining statement than that.

Of course, this means he believes god is white, because The Donald doesn’t rent to black people.

  7. cartomancer says

But isn’t this Trump quote pretty much exactly how the Vatican treats their idea of god? Catholic churches are plastered in the kind of Trumptastic gaudiness that proclaims importance with reference to an excess of opulence and material wealth.

  8. Reginald Selkirk says

“… at a very special price.”

Should we presume he means a special high price? Because an all-powerful God would certainly have unlimited resources.

  9. inquisitiveraven says

Polytheists are generally pretty accepting of other people’s religions. It’s the aggressive monotheists that denounce all other religions as false. Rome was well known for incorporating foreign gods into its religious practices.

  10. Crudely Wrott, lurching towards recrudescence says

@#11, Reginald writes: “. . . an all-powerful God would certainly have unlimited resources.”

One could be forgiven for thinking so, what with all the poly-omnis appended to it. Nevertheless, according to most of its hand picked representatives here on earth (and who obviously know what they’re talking about being hand picked and all), the bastard is always broke and begging for bucks.
