Samantha Bee interviews the head of the organization of American Catholic nuns that has earned the ire of Papa Ratzi for their emphasis on helping the poor instead of focusing their efforts on the things the Vatican considers far more important, like upholding the church’s doctrine against contraception and abortion and same sex marriage.

There seems to be a disconnect between the article’s title and the context (unless there’s a subtext to Samantha Bee’s report that I totally missed when I saw it)

Sorry, wrong title for the post! Corrected now.
'Tis Himself says
“You wouldn’t take two minutes to shame that gay couple?”
No wonder the Catholic Church is upset with the American nuns.

If you actually read the New Testament, you find that this Jesus character has a rather composite personality and most of the time comes across as a complete dick. Christians, being stuck with him as the founder of their religion have, to their credit, managed to use a combination of cherry picking and whitewashing to create a good-guy Jesus to follow. Is there any organisation that is further away from the teachings of this good-guy Jesus than the Roman Catholic Church? These nuns do their best to emulate good-guy Jesus and the Vatican gets on their case about it. Ratty is rich and powerful, can regular Catholics point me to the Jesus quote that says ‘Blessed are the rich and powerful’?

The Southern Baptist Convention? Though the Vatican seems to be doing its damnedest to try and catch up to them.

Thanks for the video clip, Mano! I’ve been following this story with great interest (I came very close to joining an order of women religious when I was younger -- but am now a feminist atheist, and married mom). Sr. Simone is the head of Network, which is a social justice network. Network is one of the groups run by nuns who were targeted by the Vatican’s reprimand, but the group which came directly under fire was the LEadership Conference of Women Religious. The LCWR represents the majority of US nuns, including Sr. Simone and her colleagues at Network. I wrote two posts on this if you are interested (http://www.niftyatheist.com/2012/04/vatican-reprimands-women-religious.html)
