The ugly side of Mike Huckabee

I have written before about how Mike Huckabee advocates some really hateful ideas and uses inflammatory language while trying to portray himself as a genial, bass guitar playing, avuncular figure.

Steve Benen helps further that case by compiling a list of all the awful things Huckabee has said or done that shows, as Austin Cline says, that he is “as much of an theocratic, authoritarian, extremist Christian as anyone in the Christian Right today.”

Since Huckabee is one of the people mentioned as a potential Romney vice-presidential pick, presumably because he brings southern and evangelical strength while supposedly not alienating independent and liberal voters too much, it is important to keep his views in sharp focus. He should not be allowed to succeed with his con game.

Back when Huckabee was a candidate, he had made a statement that “I have more respect for an honest atheist than a disingenuous believer”.

Several people mistook it for a nod at atheists, but what he was essentially saying is that he prefers people who wear their depravity on their sleeve rather than hiding it beneath a veneer of godliness. He treats atheism and immorality as synonyms.

This is deep prejudice, the kind that is hidden inside ones presuppositions.

Huckabee robocalled me while I was trying to nap yesterday. I hung up of course, but am kind of sorry I didn’t listen to see what he was going to say. Asking for money, no doubt.

  3. Mano Singham says

The consistent pattern of saying one thing to one group and then another to another group seems so calculated that I think he is a deliberate deceiver.

  4. Randomfactor says

As governor he reportedly had a vicious streak he kept hidden in public.

His behind-the-scenes dealing to release a rapist, who went on to kill again, will no doubt be painted over in 2016.

This is why his shot is as a VP candidate I think. He bypasses the Republican primaries (the only place where this could decisively hurt him).

  6. 'Tis Himself says

Huckabee has no problem lying about other people. Here’s a year old newspaper article about his lies concerning Obama.

“When he gave the bust--the bust of Winston Churchill back to the Brits, a great insult to the British,” Huckabee added. “But then if you think about it, his perspective, growing up in Kenya with a Kenyan father and grandfather, their view of the Mau Mau revolution in Kenya is very different from ours because he probably grew up thinking the British were a bunch of Imperialist who persecuted his grandfather.”

Again correction--Obama did not grow up in Kenya. Yet there are many people who have a different perspective about the history of British colonial rule in Africa that may differ from Mike Huckabee’s, including the Kenyans killed during the Mau Mau and those whose lands were stolen.
