Political discrimination against beer!

I’ve never been much of an alcohol drinker — the example of my alcoholic grandfather kept me wary of the stuff — but I’ve gotten even more extreme over the course of the last few years and am a teetotaler now. I just figure I don’t need to add to the problems of aging with something that’s stacking on other difficulties.

But there is one event that might make me temporarily end my abstinence. When Donald Trump dies, I’m going to have a margarita. Just one. I might even be moved to dance.

If the conservative powers-that-be have their way, such behavior would be illegal.

A popular brewery that promised free beer to its patrons upon the death of President Donald Trump is having its alcohol permit revoked.

The Wisconsin Department of Revenue is planning to shut down the Minocqua Brewing Company by August 4, according to a newsletter published Sunday by brewery owner Kirk Bangstad, who described the business as “the state’s most progressive brewery.”

Please let it be known to MAGA that conservatives want to prohibit the sale of beer.

Wellllll…ithat’s apparently not quite the story. The article doesn’t mention that he’s being investigated for doing contract brewing in Illinois then bringing the beer to Wisconsin without any permits or paying any taxes. Whether the threatened closure is heavy-handed or not is for the courts to decide, but he’s definitely broken laws.

This situation apparently is not as it appears. The bar owner reportedly has a history of violating the law.

    Republican voters and beer…
Maybe we can GM the ingredients of beer so the MAGA crowd unwittingly get vaccinated against measles and COVID? This would require encapsuling the molecules of the vaccines into nano-cages that preserve them through the passage through the stomach, but it should be doable.

November 3, voting day is only 96 days away. The GOP is expected to take it in their shorts bigly. I have a 375 ml bottle of proscuto, (Italian champagne) waiting for the occasion. The new Congress is to be seated January 3rd. 157 days away. It is going to get weird.

“6 bottles of Chateau Latour 45 and a double Jeroboam of champagne.”

Careful, you wouldn’t want to ruin the occasion.

As the party started, they started serving rather potent rum-and-cokes, and I was not in any sense a drinker, but I had to down a couple of them. I was totally blitzed early in the evening.

One thing I learned is that I cannot hold my liquor. Another thing I learned is that I am the most boring drunk on the planet. I spent the whole night at the craps table, throwing dice and staring owlishly at the results, estimating probabilities with a brain that no longer worked. Don’t invite me to your party if you expect an antic, table-dancing maniac, sorry.

    birgerjohansson @5: “unwittingly get vaccinated”

Lack of consent would make that a non-starter.

However, vaccine floss has shown promise. That was targeting the junctional epithelium lining tooth sockets. My cursory searching hasn’t turned up any indications that mouthwash would get down in there, though mouthwash additives can affect gingival epithelium generally.

Vaxart makes coated tablets to survive the stomach and deliver vaccines into small intestine and have been testing one for covid.

The night of the day Nixon resigned (yeah, I know, back in the Dark Ages; we should be so lucky), I went out drinking for the first and last time in my life. It was in a little nameless town in northeastern Montana, where I was working for the feds on a summer job. At the bar my co-workers and I went to, one of about ten that comprised the entire downtown of that place, I drank exactly two sips of some unremembered alcoholic drink. I learned the same two lessons as PZ describes: I can’t hold my liquor, and I’m boring as fuck when I’m drunk. I slipped off the bar stool about 20 minutes later, made my shaky way to the Ladies’ and spent the rest of the next hour throwing up. Then my coworkers took me home. An evening thoroughly wasted. I could have (and did, on many other occasions) walked 1/2 mile out of town and spent the same amount of time looking up at the stars, which, as a city-dweller all my life, I’d never seen before in all their glory.

That incident where I drank too much was when I was 19 or 20. If I couldn’t handle it then, I’m not going to be able to cope at an age 50 years later.

Goddamn. 50 years later. I’m feeling old now.

    Going off on a tangent.

Ha! Someone is fighting back against the Stupid Party: Democrats in Minnesota have passed a bill banning AI-generated child p**n.
Elon Musk’s AI company is now suing to block the bill. Because of course it is.

BTW there is no ‘safe’ level of alcohol consumption. It is increasing the risk for cancer, among other things. But thanks to GM we now have alcohol-free beer that actually tastes good.
Myself I have always opted for ice water.

You can dance if you want to. (Maybe not pogoing.)

  13. Rob Grigjanis says

birgerjohansson @13: There’s no ‘safe’ level for just being alive. You’re going to die anyway, and odds are it won’t be pleasant. I enjoy drinking. Longevity versus quality of life (for your own definition of ‘quality’ of course)? I’ll take quality any day.

  14. Kevin Karplus says

@15: I plan to maximize the duration and quality of my remaining life. I’ve not seen that heavy drinkers enjoy themselves nor live long, so I’m avoiding heavy drinking. Half a beer or a glass of wine a day seems to me to balance the pleasure and risk in a reasonable way.

@PZ: the Republicans aren’t opposed to selling beer—they are opposed to free beer. (Though, as drksky said, the situation is not quite as described.)

    birgerjohansson @13
Since there is evidence for human use of alcohol for more than 10 000 years, I guess that’s not enough to make evolutionary arguments.

[topic drift is my excuse, but also supporting PZ]

Yah, but some people are natural-born pisspots.

They literally can’t just have a tipple.
Runs in the family, sometimes. And the family itself notices.

(That’s mostly genetic, which is sorta evolutionary, no? :)

The heritability of alcohol use disorders: a meta-analysis of twin and adoption studies

    Conclusions.
AUD is approximately 50% heritable. The multiple genetically informative studies of this syndrome have produced consistent results that support the validity of this heritability estimate, especially given the different potential methodological weaknesses of twin and adoption designs, and of assessments of AUD based on personal interviews v. official records. We also found evidence for modest shared environmental effects suggesting that environmental factors also contribute to the familial aggregation of AUDs.
