The White House (I think that means Steven Miller) is weirdly proud of the fact that they’ve turned the nation into a chaotic hellhole that no one wants to live in any more.
I’m sure that if Republicans use this as a campaign slogan there are American citizens who will see this as a net positive.

Obsessing over politics and repeating other people’s opinions from social media. What a great use of your limited time on earth.
Humans are a political species. People live and die on politics.

-The ancient greeks regarded those who were unconcerned about public affairs as idiots.
This is because poor politics will hurt the entire society.

Having stated that, I understand some people feel burned out. But instead of abandoning politics forever, they should pause until they feel strong enough to face the cacaphony of bad news again.
I personally know people (USA born) who have left the country or are actively working on getting out. My own nephew is in the process of emigrating to Canada. Can’t say I blame them.
@1. Funny.
OT, but something that may make you less depressed:

drksky @ #4 — I was wondering about emigration. Per this article in Morning Brew (here), 150,000 Americans emigrated last year. Although my bags are not packed, I’ve looked into it. My partner would happily emigrate to England, but we’ve even discussed the possibility of The Netherlands. Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem easy to do but I would love to be shown a way…just in case.
George Will wrote a column in response to all the news about ICE kidnapping people and causing chaos all over the country; and basically said “Yes, but this one Texas border town is a much nicer place because of all that!” Which should give us a clear idea how narrow and blinkered Republicans’ vision is here. The places being turned into Third-World hellholes are places Republicans have always been portraying as Third-World hellholes anyway.
@#1
Trolling a blog you don’t like is a waste of your limited time on earth.
Being a stupid driveby troll like you is a lot worse.
This is just a contentless trivial insult by a hate filled MAGA bigot.
The fact that the biggest drop in immigration is still under 100% means that even under Trump and Miller, people are still immigrating TO the USA. So, total hellhole not yet achieved.
Don’t short sell their incredible achievement. This is net migration, so it isn’t just that people don’t want to move there any more, it’s also that more people who can do so are choosing to leave! Wins all round!
Notice that #1 uses their limited time on earth to drop by on social media to leave us with their opinions. Perhaps they are doing some navel staring now that that’s done.
It’s not surprising net immigration fell. All of my 3 children are trying to figure out how to permanently leave the U.S., one has already temporarily emigrated. 40% of U.S. women want to emigrate, according to a recent poll. The U.S. has almost collapsed into despotism, naturally sensible people want to get out, especially when they lose hope. And the leadership of our Democrats surely doesn’t give us much hope.
We’re facing Trump’s attempt to create despotism, and how are Democrats responding? Instead of backing the best anti-despot candidates in several Senate races who happen to be independent and not Democrat, they insist on running a losing candidate that will split off votes. If it’s bad that Ralph Nader did this in 2000, it’s bad for Democrats to do likewise today. In fact, far worse, because at that time our choice wasn’t between a clear tyrant and our democracy but instead between two elitist but republican parties. Our situation is a five-alarm fire, and many Dems are playing the fiddle of partisan politics. It is dismaying.
daulnay @ # 14: … the best anti-despot candidates in several Senate races who happen to be independent…
Eh wot? Name some names, please.
I say don’t leave. Trump and Republicans are becoming more and more unpopular-down to 37%- and we may soon see in 26 and 28 their demise for a long long time. It’s happened before. What they are doing is so awful they will be voted out, perhaps no matter how uninspired the democrats may be.
Looks good as long as you do not mind long-term negative population growth. My data up to 2022 shows a fertility rate below replacement since 2010. It was below replacement rate from 1974 to 1988. Just eye-balling my graph it looks to be about 1.4 . Replacement rate is generally taken as 2.1.
As an aside I stumbled over a blog run by a US doctor who moved to Canada abmout 10-12 years ago and who seems to be devoting the blog to persuading US doctors to move to Canada. Given the number of health professionals moving to Canada he may be having an effect.
Of course, a couple of provinces, BC in particular, have been running active recruitment campaigns in the US.
OOPs forgot to mention that the Canadian Government seems to have made some changes in citizenship law that makes becoming a Canadian citizen easier for someone with Canadian grandparents. CBC Radio reports that inquiries about genealogy has jumped from about half a dozen inquiries a year to over 1,000.

blockquote>Obsessing over politics ..
Politics matters sadly -& obvs isn;’tthe sole focus and toipic of this blog or PZ’s life.
PZ is expressing his own views here NOT repeating , quotingand citing the view sof orthers (eg who?) – & doing so in a more intresting and far better fashion than your needlessly kvetching about him doing so.
What a great use of your limited time on earth.
It actually is. A lot of people find PZ’s blog posts intresting and worthwhile and worth discussing like, well, yourself clearly since you bother to comment on them albeit contributing little of value here.
I notice you haven’t answered my questions to you in # 18 & #19 here :
https://freethoughtblogs.com/pharyngula/2026/03/23/hell-is-an-american-airport/#comment-2296166
So again :
(1) Do you disagree with PZ here and if so why?
(2) If you think PZ is missing something then please say what and why that matters.
(3) What exactly is your problem here?
@ ^ Dóh! Double blockquote fail. Apologies folks. Mea culpa. Guess everyone gets the gist anyhow. Hopefully.
I believe that, while there are people in the US that fight for democracy, that country isn’t doomed.
Much people around here, with only their votes, blogs, videos, presence in demonstrations against authoritarism and organizations that fight for democracy, are doing a great work to save their country ( and the rest of the world).
You must not gave up, i, and much more people in the US and the world, need you.
chesapeake @# 16 it’s easy to say ‘don’t leave’, but for someone who is eg trans there are countries where they will be significantly safer, and by safer I mean able to live as a trans person without risk to their treatment or worse their lives.
jrkrideau@17 Could you please give the addy or name of the US doctor now living in Canada blog? I have to argue with people who keep telling me that all Canadian doctors lust after American $$ and look forward to moving to the US. (On a personal note, my mother had tongue cancer. The doctor who operated on her was “only” the 2nd best doctor in the country in his specialty. I talked to him, and he shared that he was educated in Canada, got his M.D., then his specialty and then moved to the US for the $$$. He came back after only 3 years. I asked him why.. He said, “Because i wasn’t allowed to actually practice medicine. I had barely-educated idiots under 30 years old allowing or disallowing my treatment plans based upon the maintaining the desired profit levels of their US health-insurance corporation. I asked him as well, did he lose money? He replied, “Definitely. But in the end, it didn’t matter. Here in Canada, I am a doctor.”
Pierce R. Butler@15: viable Independent Senate candidates ?
Brian Bengs in South Dakota
Seth Bodnar in Montana (campaign run by former staffers of Tester)
Todd Achilles in Idaho
and of course Dan Osborn in Nebraska
Jazzlet@28:
This, exactly. We are people who will fill the new internment camps once Trump starts going beyond immigrants; gay, trans, Jewish, really any non-white non-Christians. The parallels with Nazi Germany are too many, very chilling, so we’ve been preparing.
daulnay @ # 24 – Not having much connection to the upper midwest, I admit I hadn’t heard of any of those.
But this morning I saw Democratic Party slams own Senate candidate as GOP plant after Trump support revealed, which says the Nebraska Dems (much like the New York City Republicans in the recent mayoral race) are backing the independent against their “own” candidate:
all of which makes me want ranked-pref voting even more.
