UMM is hosting the SCOPES conference (Small Campus Observatories as Promoters of Education in Science) today through Saturday, so 43 astronomers are going to be roaming the campus and talking about telescopes and education.
There is a public lecture tonight, too. Check out the program!
Do they know there’s a Japanese private space agency landing onthe Moon today too?

I saw “Scopes Conference” and thought “Monkey Trial” and that I was about to get treated to the latest inanities from Ken Ham. But astronomy is a lot more interesting.
When Einstein was staying in Pasadena in 1933, he dropped by our local community college to dedicate its new observatory. Too bad UMM doesn’t have someone equally famous to visit yours.
Upcoming Telescope Predicted to Discover Millions of Hidden Solar System Objects
@2 robo beat me to it: ‘I saw “Scopes Conference” and thought “Monkey Trial” ‘
before reading his comment I thought:
Hmmm, Scopes Conference! Sounds like they are just monkeying around.
then I read:
@4 Reginald Selkirk: ‘Upcoming Telescope Predicted to Discover Millions of Hidden Solar System Objects’
So, I was wondering if they are going to get a really good look at uranus?
Sorry, given all the devastation we are experiencing, I’ve got to resort to some silly humor, or I’ll be immersed in anger and sorrow.
Hold on a minute. An American funded project named after a woman? Surely Cheetolini will declare the naming of the “Vera C Rubin Observatory” to be in violation of his anti-DEI agenda, and order it be renamed after a white Christo-fascist male.
@ ^ kukulkan : That really wouldn’t surprise me.
