Birds are cowards

I was out for a walk, and what did I see? Flocks of birds running away (OK, flying away, to be precise) from our little winter.

OK, I’m being a little unfair, #notallbirds. There are these little black-capped chickadees that hang around my house, and they’ll be here all winter. Those are #bravebirds. But geese? Big bullying cowards that hang around the parks pooping all over the place, and fleeing south at the first little cold snap.

That’s just what they want you to think. Don’t trust the geese, or when the revolution comes you’re foie gras. They don’t need us. They never did, but they want our precious livers.

Oh yeah, chickadees. Amazing little birdies, they are. They represent to me “the sound of winter”. As we xc ski or snowshoe through the woods, we hear their “chick-a-dee-dee-dee” calls and wonder how they survive our winters, sometimes diving down to -20F (and lower in the Adirondacks). They always get a good helping of black oil sunflower seeds at our house. The flock usually includes a nuthatch or two, and sometimes a tufted titmouse.

… and speaking of geese, am I the only one who thinks that the Klingon “Bird of Prey” ships look like Canada geese?

HMM seems a bit late in the year. I thought geese usually migrated from Canada much earlier, the end of October at the latest.

    Oh, definitely not!
(Mind you, I’ve felt the same way about Mallards, too, since about Star Trek II. Just watch a flight of Mallards coming in for a landing some time – the wing angle is spot on!)

We have two nasty invasive species in Sweden; one eats the other.
Spanish snails have received the name “Murder snails” because they gobble up our gardens.
Canadian geese poop everywhere, but they are the only species that eat the foul-tasting bastards which is a redeeming quality.

If only the geese around here would fly away for a few months to give the poop time to dissolve. There’s one park near my house that I like to walk, but there’s so much goose poop I quit going. Unfortunately these geese are year round.

The migration used to be in October, but thanks to climate change it has advanced to ther end of November. What’s wrong wityh Canada geese? I love ’em! My senior project in college was monitoring the migration through Waverly and watching resident population changes. I still count the geese in any given flock.

If I had the carbon-neutral means to fly south every winter to a sunny tropical location, I’d do it. Don’t let envy eat you up. Penguins and other winter weatherers aren’t the best birds.

@jimf — Depends on which iteration you’re talking about. TOS, TNG, and Disco all have different designs, and that’s not taking into account the big-ass Klingon graveyard ship.

Canadian Geese were introduced over here ,so chinless wonders could shoot them .
But the huntin ,fishin, set found that they were very difficult to bring down .
Plus they didn’t form great big flocks like what they do in Canada ,so the next step was to declare them a pest .
