What will the comedians do now?

I was just thinking…with Donald Trump out of office, are the comedians going into mourning? He is such an easy target! I suppose they could milk the aftermath of his failure for humor for a while, but honestly, I’m so tired of the Orange Twerp that I don’t want to see him as the butt of jokes anymore. I just want to see him and his crooked cronies in jail.

I think it’s time for all the internet comics to pivot and start making Biden jokes. He’s an easy target, too, and you know he’s so conservative at heart that he’ll be making all kinds of bad policy decisions that will deserve skewering. Start now, please. We’ll all know the election is settled when the satire swivels to aim at the Biden administration.

    Conservative at heart? Biden has always placed himself at the center of the Democratic party, wherever that happens to be.

    Trump is not a boon to satirists. He makes their work superfluous. The best Trump comedy I have seen is Sarah Cooper doing lip-synch. If is really hard to do more than that.

    I have no worries that Tom Tomorrow will find plenty to say about President-elect Biden when the time comes. This is the least of my worries. Trump just needs to get the fuck out of the White House. I’m also “Praying to St. Stacey for two more miracles in Georgia.” but that’s kind of a long shot. I think we’re screwed. Just not quite as much as we were. Maybe it’ll at least be funny now.

    According to Tom Lehrer, that happened long before Trump, way back in 1973.

    Comedians find humor in everything. Jon Stewart was asked why he was retiring when Trump would make his job so easy. He replied “that was the reason. Comedy is extracting the humor that is so hard to find by conventional people, tRump was making it too easy to find humor in the crup he does” He preferred the challenge of finding the humor in everyday life rather than laughing at the absurdity of everything happening. I think there are many good comedians who prefer the challege of finding humor and presenting it to us fresh

    Back in 1986, when Bill Vander Zalm was running for Premier of British Columbia, I saw a political cartoon of a cartoonist sitting at his easel with his hands clasped in prayer, saying “And I’m sure all of us certoonists down here would be ever so grateful if you’d let Vander Zalm win the election.” Vander Zalm had been known for putting his foot in his mouth for years. He did win the election, and later became one of the few politicians in all of Canada to ever be actively turfed out by his own party. Literally, people were asking him to shut up during by-elections because he was so unpopular later on that him throwing his support behind a by-election candidate made that candidate’s public support drop.

    @richardh:
    I will admit to a fondness for the simplicity of Bob Hope’s old line: “I don’t do a lot of political jokes. Too many are getting elected.”

    (I see at least one quotes site lists this quote as unverified, but I remember him using that or something really close to it in a clip on an election special where he pretended to run for president back in 1980.)

    Exactly.

    Covid-19 may have given Doug Ford a temporary reprieve but I suspect few Tory candidates are going to want him in their ridings come the next election.

    I think that’s a major reason why SNL is so lame, aside from their political satire being limp-wristed in general. The reality of the Trump presidency is too absurd as it is. That scene at Four Seasons Total Landscaping was as insane as anything the writers of Veep could have conceived of.

    I have to question your original premise. Do you really think Trump is going to shut up and go away? The daily tweet-storms will continue. What about his children, at least two of whom have political ambitions? Right now, any Republican will tell you their 2024 candidate will almost certainly be Trump Sr., Ivanka, or Trump Jr. Comedians will have plenty to work with, even if Biden is too boring to work with.

    It was also better than any prank Sacha Baron Cohen could come up with. My favorite touch was the hazard diamond in the background. I still haven’t figured out who was pwning who. Maybe it is all part of a game of n-dimensional chess.
