And now for something different. I wanted to experiment with this streaming thing all the cool kids do, so I’m trying out OBS and playing around with YouTube, and the easiest thing to do is to fire up Minecraft and see if I can put it online. Watch! I’ll probably screw up some settings! If it works, you can count on me to die multiple times! You can yell at me over chat!
I don’t know how long I’ll play, since I’m mainly interested in figuring out the mechanics, but if you encourage me to do some stupid thing, I might keep plodding along from disaster to disaster. That’ll be fun, right?
(If you’re wondering about details, this is under Linux, using a Logitech webcam, a Yeti microphone, and OBS software. It should work, with the only question being the competence of the bozo setting it up.)
Hey, that went surprisingly well. All the software worked, I didn’t die in Minecraft, I found a good location to build a house. What could be better? Well, the audio. I was getting an annoying hiss throught, and it would crackle and break up if I spoke too loudly. Maybe I’ll try it again next week, after I hammer out some of the sound problems.
Try Kerbal Space Program some time.
IIRC, PZ described trying to shoot an Earth orbiting satellite into the Sun using Kerbal (harder than it seems from watching SciFi). Can’t locate a link via Google.

Applicable to most modern technology but somehow fails to be true for what feels like half the time. Some of the most trivial devices can feel like Plug-(roll dice)-and-play.
PZ Plays The Vidya is yet another thing I wasn’t expecting to see in 2020, but this is a pleasant surprise for once.
Bumbling into Minecraft is going to be interesting because Minecraft has an infamously opaque first day, especially if you start somewhere that has no visible coal seams.

Spiders and squids. (And penguins, especially penguins, says the mildly deranged penguin, not at all mildly jumping up-and-down on my head. And, she adds, cheese! Moar cheese!!)
Balancing audio settings is, in my experience, one of the trickier things about streaming. Tinker with the mic/input bar until your normal speaking voice barely gets into the yellow range. That should really help out. Also, it never hurts to double-check your microphone connections, just in case one of the wires is slightly loose.
Other have already said, but I’ll reinforce, bad voice audio is usually because the gain on the mic is way too high.
OBS makes getting a stream up an running a snap.
