I was going to pay my respects to the innocent dead murdered by a terrorist who praised Donald Trump and made various fascist dogwhistles to online fascists. Is it cool if I wear my red MAGA hat and smirk a bit? Or will it make me look like an insensitive, arrogant ass?

It’s a white supremacist slogan.
The 14 refers to a 14 word thing Hitler said, something about securing the future for white children. 88 is for the 8th letter of the alphabet. HH= Heil Hitler.
14: the 14 words used by some asshat to justify replacement theory.
88: numerology for HH, or “Heil Hitler”.

That kid is going to claim that he’s just there for the lulz, that he’s just trolling and not actually a bigot. I would argue that this modern brand of trolling is just evidence of bigotry. Let’s look at the numbers.
To be a bigot is to see some class of people as inferior to another class for specious reasons. If you use racist language or racist symbology to get a rise out of a group of people, you are essentially saying that you are superior to them because they are angered by this language or these symbols. This sense of superiority enables the troll to see the target class as… well targets, not people. To see someone as a target instead of a person, you are literally dehumanizing that person.
So if you see yourself as superior (perceived thicker skin) than another class of people, and are willing to dehumanize them to achieve a goal of exposing this, then you are a bigot.
Fashion tip: If it is inappropriate to wear SS uniforms or KKK robes to the event it is also inappropriate to wear MAGA hats.
If you attend events where such attire is appropriate I can’t help you.

There was a study recently published that looked at the incidence of hate crimes in counties that Trump held rallies in. They did a good job of trying to control bias. The results showed a greater than 200% incidence in hate crimes after his rallies. Of course a study like this is really only valid for hypothesis generation but boy it sure suggests a causation rather than a correlation. Especially when compared to the first study published in PNAS as to why people voted for Trump.

I watched the clip. I was surprised he ‘gave up’ so fast. He’s young. So I’m intuiting he’s a newbie racist. And that then made me think about those two recent reports. So sad.
