It’s always been that way, hasn’t it? Here’s just another example: an old white woman sees a black youngster selling candy and has to protest, claiming her own righteousness.
God Almighty these people have nothing better to do than harass young Black entrepreneurial kids?

The most telling moment in the woman’s complaint:
“They do it all around the country and you should see how they live,” the woman says.
As the teen counts the candy Lopez tells the woman that she’s ignorant.
“How dare you call me a racist, you have no idea,” says the woman to Lopez who completely ignores her and leaves the scene to get cash.
“They”. You should see how “they” live. And then to complain that you’ve been called a racist.
The man who bought all the candy is named Jay Lopez. He was being more than an ally — he was a collaborator. We all need to be more like that. It’s time to subvert the dominant paradigm.
The first comment on the Twitter thread is this one, and it’s also very true:
Everyone needs to go to their grandparents house, and change the channel on the tv.
— TheShrike (@bklinger62) July 11, 2018
I’m pleased to say that I’m at my mother’s house this week, and she watches MSNBC, and last night we watched Rachel Maddow together. Just sayin’ there are some grandmas who don’t need their channels changed, and we all know which poisonous network that comment is talking about.

That Tweet about “change the channel”, I strongly agree with AND it spotlights my struggle with my tolerance (IE the one in “paradox of…”)
IE , why should I think I should decide who can watch a TV show they enjoy? Don’t I want them to leave ME alone?
to answer this I resort to an “analogy” of :
Isn’t it okay to stop people drinking liters of alcohol they enjoy so much, not being equivalent to disallowing me to drink coffee.
Fux News is not a show for entertainment, it is a toxic info-sludge poisoning the minds of the people watching it, much like the films the guy was forced to watch in Clockwork Orange (hmmm, orange, interesting synchronicity)

To be honest I’m not all that worried about the elderly racists – they’ll be dead soon. It’s the young and middle-aged racists who are the ones that need the attention.

At my aging parents house, Fox News is on 12 hours a day. They want to return the USA to the 1950’s – until you mention the 90% tax rates during that boom time. But the good news is that new voters coming of age this Nov seem to be mostly democratic. Sadly, I guess the old people just have to die off for real change to occur.

The thing that disturbs me is realizing how much more of this stuff happened in the not-so-distant past when people didn’t walk around with video recording devices. (And that’s on top of realizing that even now, the incidents that go viral are just the tip of the iceberg.)

I’m a grandparent (oldest grandchild is 10). CHange the channel? I don’t even *own* a TV.
Re: willj @ #6… I remember when the top marginal rate was 70% and I know about the 90% rate. I say, bring it back! I also think the law establishing joint filing should be removed…so we can go back to individual filing with–in community property states like California–income averaging.
Re: robertbaden @ #8… Mine are all dead (one in 1917, the others lived into the 1960s and 1970s). Two (of the 3 I knew) grandparents were really cool. On the other hand, they were both immigrants from Denmark. How many people born circa 1880 have you known that read science fiction magazines in the late 1930s?

re 8,9:
yes we must avoid the trap of only blaming the previous generation for all the errors occurring, Like grumpy old men aren’t the only ones yelling to kids playing there. Quite a few each generation get sucked into bigotry, which is how it is a perennial problem.

Yeah, most of the other highly publicized incidents lately, like #PermitPatty and the various pool police over the July 4th holiday, appeared to be young-ish. The Charlottesville idiots were a young group.
We also don’t know how much of the correlation between age and racism is a cohort effect. Are today’s old people more likely to be racist than today’s young people because they grew up in the 30s/40s/50s, or because they’re old? Will today’s young people get more racist as they age? (If that sounds silly to you, consider that as people get older, they tend to start buying houses in the suburbs and obsessing over property values and schools and crime and thus more receptive to racist appeals on those subjects.)
slithey tove (twas brillig (stevem)) says
re @11:
agreed, one common excuse is that older people move into neighborhoods where everyone looks just like them, not “racist” motive, they want everyone to look the same as themselves, and all watch the same channels to have same opinions and no arguments about “issues” only about litter.

Since I appear white, I’d have no personal concern moving into either a white or mixed race neighborhood.
That’s not true for the Mexican American side of the family. I was told by them there are known bad white neighborhoods in Houston.

When the newest grandchild is born in September, we’ll the the grandparents of seven – the oldest being 19.
In our house, it’s MSNBC, and we tend to think more like our grandkids and the four liberal adult children.
The one I’m worried about is the youngest. She’s in her early 30s, but married a Texas redneck and has adopted his conservative beliefs. She seems to think that her redneck, who barely managed to graduate from high school a year late, is smarter than her father, who holds not one, but five, advanced science and computer degrees. And, FUX is always on their TV, too.
I’m embarrassed to claim her lately.
Where was this video filmed? It looks like something one would see here in South Texas. Kudos to the Latino man!

My grandparents are dead. My 103 year old great aunt watches Mythbusters on itunes. My cousin and his kid watch Fox. So, can we cut the crap with the ageism already? It’s not any better now than in the 1960s when the boomers were doing it.

I’m an ol’ white guy (first grandchild turns 1 next week). I feel bad enough that I use Fox to watch Big Bang Theory re-runs, because they occasionally run news promos during commercials. Their ‘news’ is never on in our house, in fact broadcast TV watching in general has seriously diminished since the last election.

I’m not worried for them, but I definitely worry about them. This child could be dead right now if this woman had called the wrong cop on him. Old white people SWAT people of color just as well as any young white person. They are all equally frightening to me.

My parents are frail and in their eighties, but they’re some of the scariest racists I know. It’s hard to believe folks can reach that age and keep so much hatred inside them, but they do. They go to a “Christian” church with others like them. In addition to Fox News, they watch truly crazy religious shows with carnival-barking preachers who say Trump was ordained by God, and whose audience does exactly what they’re told to do. These people turned out in droves to vote for Trump.
I used to think getting older made you wiser. No, I’m no respecter of age.
