An interesting choice of words, there. The term “courageous”, when used by a politician of a politician, reminds me very strongly of “Yes, Prime Minister”.
Of course, I am not sure that sabre-rattling of this degree actually would cost Trump much with voters, which is certainly all that Trump would care about, so maybe my recollection is irrelevant.

God, what a terrible speech. Jingoistic boosterism of the USA, what appears to be no awareness of how the USA is viewed in much of the rest of the war, a few nasty dog whistles thrown in, threat of (probably nuclear) war with North Korea, and various threats against Iran and Venezuela that I’d call threats of war and renewed hostility with Cuba.
I’d say that besides scaring the rest of the world speechless, in one 41 minute speech Trump has done more damage to the USA’s international standing than George Bush did in the Iraq invasion. Hell, throw Gitmo in as well.
Trump has proclaimed that the USA is a rogue nation which cannot be trusted to keep its agreement.
This has really reached a point where Pence’s brand of evil has become a lot less scary looking by comparison.
At least with him, oppressed LGBTA people will have the option to flee to other countries: can’t do that very will during a nuclear war.

Looked at as a election speech for a domestic audience it might have gained or reinforced some support. There were enough US tropes/memes or whatever extolling the USA to do so.
However the ostensible audience world leader and their senior diplomats who, I will say, did not laugh.

For someone like me, outside the USA, Pence has looked like a possibly better deal since before the election.
We would be much happier to receive refugees than nuclear fallout or the occasional off-course missile.
Didn’t watch or listen. Cinnamon Hitler’s voice generates the same reaction for me as dragging a million fingernails across a quarter million blackboards — with amplification and feedback.
Would have been interesting if, when he was announced, everyone got up and quietly left. That would have left Nikki Haley, Bibi and whoever Russia has schlepping for Putin in the room. The twit storm would be epic.
One has to wonder if he has any concept at all of the innocent lives, the lives of the people he argued are suffering, that would be lost “wiping North Korea off the map.” He either speaks inartfully–assuming he is aware that millions and millions of innocent people are in his cross-hairs–or he shows he just doesn’t care. They are Asian people, after all, and not made from the stout Scots-German stock he is. Obviously they are less worthy to live. I am sure the Evangelicals who support him will give him a Christian pass on that one.
It is time to pay Mitchell and Webb more royalties for referencing their ‘are we the bad guys?’ skit again isn’t it? Trump is acting like the cartoonish stereotype of the genocidal maniac leader, in love with the sheer killing power of his arsenal of weapons of mass destruction, and simply desperate to find an excuse to fire a few off just to show the whole world what a big man he is.
When the single most powerful person on the planet seems to honestly think of thermonuclear warheads as just really big party crackers, or at best the equivalent of a pistol in a gunslinger’s hip holster you can show off whenever you want to pretend you are John Wayne, it is time to start asking serious questions about the viability of the system that allowed such a man to enter the highest of offices in the first place.

Not to say Trump isn’t racist, because of course he is, but if it came to it I doubt he would care that much about millions of Germans dying either. The ones with enough euros, sure, but the average ones would just count as great turn out for the tragedy.

If there were no such place as Libya, and no such person as Abdulrahman Anwar al-Awlaki, I might join you in your condemnation, but the last decade has shown that nobody in the American political class has any concept of innocent lives, so such condemnations are meaningless. As a certain person who comments regularly here demonstrated very thoroughly during 2016, if you’re an American and you don’t like endless war, you not only don’t get any choice to vote for, but you will be told in no uncertain terms to sit down, shut up, and wave your flag for a candidate you find morally repellant.

Not really; the idea behind the UN is that it is in the interests of all countries to work together — that it is better to bicker diplomatically than it is to have a war. This is generally true, but it seems to be, historically, one of the easiest lessons to forget. After one generation, the most war-devastated country is always ready to fight again if it looks like there is even the tiniest, most short-term advantage to be grabbed.
