    I actually only came across the word in Harry Potter, so it never occurred to me that it was a real beast. But it so obviously derives from Dutch “tree snake” that I’m kicking myself for not realizing it before.

    via Stuff NZA 17-month-old Brazilian boy fatally bit a killer snake after it approached him while he was playing in the back garden of his home.
    The dead snake was identified as the jararaca pit viper – it’s bite can cause brain haemorrhage, kidney failure and fatal shock.

    “He bit the young jararaca close to its head, which immobilised it and prevented it from biting him,” Gilmar Carteri, a doctor at the hospital, told G1 news.

    Me and my friends used to catch and handle brown snakes in Whyalla, South Australia during my early teens.

    We didn’t think it was a big deal.

    God, we were young and stupid.
