Mary’s Monday Metazoan: Vermiform is the best form

Behold, the newly rediscovered Malatgan River caecilian. When my ankle acts up, I begin to think that maybe these critters were smarter than I am in jettisoning all those messy, complicated limbs.

    Vermiform is the best form

Because a vermiform critter is basically one giant tentacle. Right, PZ?

You bet! Besides, they go down a whole lot smoother than those gangly insects, with all those appendages, hooks, and jointy bits to stick in your throat.

Like any good slimy Republican, they get a rent boy.

Let ’em crow about the lack of ankle soreness. Just wait a few years until the caecilian is middle aged and starts getting back pain. Bet that will wipe the smile of their smug little face then, when they realize they’re all back and nothing else.

Hey, limbs are fine–the more the better!

It’s *joints* that are a waste of time.
