The 2014 annual Edge question was “What scientific idea is ready for retirement?”. That’s an interesting question, but as usual, there are a few answers that are complete bullshit. This year’s big dumb answer comes from Douglas Rushkoff, a media consultant, who suggests that science needs to get rid of The Atheism Prerequisite. It’s entirely a whine about a false premise.
We should do away with Religious Studies.
Those who have written to you in defence of religious studies, and in opposition to the philosophy GCSE proposals that I and Dr John Taylor have put forward, do it not on intellectual and pedagogical grounds, but because they have a vested interest in keeping RS going.
They only do it for the big money from Big Theology! I am quite happy to see that argument turned around — we get so many accusations that science is propped up by Big Science or Big Pharma or whatever, and that we’re only in it for the cash. I don’t think theologians are actually in it to get rich (like scientists, there isn’t that much money in our philosophies), but religion would die a little faster if there weren’t so much interest in paying people for affirming silly beliefs.
The Sioux Falls Feminists have put up a billboard with a clearly stated idea.
I agree with that. Strangely, though, there is a Twitter account for anti-Sioux Falls Feminists, and they object, and have followers who also object.
The day before my birthday! No, wait, that’s not it: It’s International Women’s Day! Celebrate by noticing something women do!
An Indonesian company printed some interesting washing instructions on the tag of their shirts.
"Washing instructions: Give this shirt to a woman. It’s her job," Salvo Sports printed on the shirts of Indonesian Super League team Pusamania Borneo.
I understand that bread in Indonesia ought to come in bags with instructions that say, “Give this loaf to a woman. She’ll make you a sandwich.”
But before all you angry feminists start waving torches and pitchforks, the company has apologized. They are deeply, terribly, weepingly sorry for their sexist assumptions.
Are you a woman? Are you a surgeon? Are you in Australia (or maybe any of many other places)? Then you should be aware of the culture in your profession.
I usually watch movies alone. I like to go, and we have a very nice old theater here in town, but my wife isn’t really into them. There’s usually a conversation something like this at my house on the weekend…
“Would you like to go to the movie tonight?”
“No, thanks.”
I get shot down more often in my requests for dates now than I ever did in high school. It’s OK, though, it’s usually because the movie playing isn’t to her taste, and I can respect that. It has to be some kind of chick flick to get her interested.
The closer we look at the situation in Ferguson, the more vile it gets. The courts were stacking minor fines on people — especially black people — and then putting them on a merry-go-round of constantly accumulating fines. And when the poor were unable to pay the fines, they were thrown in jail. One woman had to pay over $500 on a $150 parking fine, and even that didn’t clear the debt.
But if you were a rich white debtor, you got a completely different kind of treatment.
